- TheOneYouKNowRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This is one of the better stories I've read.
From a writing standpoint, this story is almost at the level of a professional. I've heard from the author's patreon that we're reading what's basically a rough draft, so it's very impressive that the author can write something with very few grammatical or spelling errors on the first goaround. The prose are easy to read and have a nice pacing.
But what really stands out to me are the characters. Wu Jian is one of the better protagonists I've read. He starts off as a cowardly weakling who's afraid of his own shadow and he slowly grows stronger and more courageous over time. By the time the first tournament comes up, Wu Jian is almost unrecognizable. I also like that he's not a sociopath, which is something I've noticed most xianxia MCs are. Like, they're legit almost as if not even more evil than the people they fight usually.
Another thing I like is that Wu Jian isn't completely OP. He's strong enough to fight people above his cultivation level, but he's not so strong that he can win just like that. He only rofflestomps the idiotic young masters. I actually like that trope too. Idiotic young masters who get slapped in the face. They're funny.
I'm also really in love with the ladies in Wu Jian's harem. Each one has their own individual desires and motivation. They're not just Wu Jian's sycophantic followers whose only purpose is to fall in love with him before he disappears for hundreds or thousands of chapters. They have substance and complex personalities that makes them feel like actual people.
One other thing I enjoy is how people can't start cultivating until they turn sixteen. I've always found it odd in cultivation novels how the young teenage boy can curbstomp the arrogant young genius master who's been cultivating since they were in their mother's wombs, or were born with a cultivation of the profound nascent divine origin whatever realm. Like, it makes no sense. However, if everyone starts at more or less the sa - Lights_Leo92Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0I honestly though it was bored at the start, its a very slow novel at the beginning but after it gets going it becomes really fun. I am really enjoying my time with this one. worth the read for sure, and it only gets better over time as the world opens up.
- Logar3Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0I’ve been really enjoying this story! It’s well written, no startling grammar issues, the characters are well developed and not just 1 dimensional,
It could be a little slow for some people, with cultivation only starting at 16 years old, when the first chapter has him at 8, but there are well placed time skips and well written growth so that it doesn't feel like it's padding for time.
All in all, if you are a fan of Xianxia, give this a shot! - WanderingVagabondRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I only just finished the tournament arc, but I thought I'd leave a review now.
I really like this story. I like the characters. I read some of the reviews and people claiming Wu Jian is a weakling, and I don't get their flex. While he starts off weak and cowardly, he becomes really strong. Like, the dude fought in a tournament with a broken arm and still won. How is he weak exactly?
I get the feeling the most important thing in this story is the harem aspect. I've read this guy's published books and he's a harem writer through and through. I like this since I come from an anime background. If you're like me, you get annoyed by how weak and dumb protagonists in harem anime are. I'm glad Wu Jian's not like that.
The writing is good. I don't have much to say. I'm not a writer. But it's easy to read. I don't have trouble keeping pace and rarely ever find myself having to Google words I don't know. It breaks me away from the story when I have to do that.
I'm still early in this story. There's a lot more chapters. But I really like it so far. I hope I continue to like it. - SouCheetosRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I read up to chapter 600 on Tapas, so I got a good idea of the series as a whole.
I really like this story, and nowadays it's the only one in the Wuxia (Chinese) style that I follow, because it doesn't follow the common mistakes and clichés that this genre has.
The characters are charismatic and human (they are not perfect) which makes the reading more interesting and unusual for this genre. Even more so as the characters mature over time, especially Wu Jian (Main Character/MC) who at the beginning is a weakling and a coward (but it's natural, he's very young and the younger brother, whoever has a younger brother knows that being beaten is normal, with due proportions), but it matures quickly and logically because things don't just happen out of nowhere, they have a reason to happen.
The MC is not that cliché of a virgin character who doesn't know how to deal with women, here he learn how to deal with women and wants to have a more intimate relationship, like any normal man. His behavior adds more realism to the story and avoids the shonem and wuxia cliché (most of them look like a eunuch lol).
And the women in the MC are the highlight... they are all charismatic and mature over time, each having their strengths and weaknesses, and they are useful for the story. They are not that trophy woman cliché (with no value apart from beauty/status), which only serve to be beautiful and generate conflicts for the MC because of it.
I consider myself a veteran reader (although I still have a lot to read, my Kindle list says so), I've read from Wuxia novels, to Japanese and Korean novels, to more traditional books like A Song of Fire and Ice. I consider the writing good and it's easy to read. I don't have trouble keeping pace and even though English is not my mother tongue, I rarely ever find myself having to Google words I don't know (with the exception of distance measurements in Chinese, but now I've memorized it lol). Of course the story isn't perfect, but even A Song of F - TadrithRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0The story is very good. If you read allot of Wuxia novels you will recognize many of the pieces that make up this novel as they are staples of the Genre. However this story puts them together in a way that still feels fresh. Overall it is a enjoyable read.
- HumbleThomRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0Not what I was expecting, but worth the read. There's a lot of room for improvement, and if this wasn't Royal road where anything less than 3.5 stars is an insult, that's probably what I'd give it. But there's a lot of good here.
The main strength of this story is it's cute characters. Third is a harem story so I need to clarify that it's not just the MC's romantic interests that are cute characters. It extends to family members, romance friends, and one it two antagonists.
The main weakness is in an overuse of the same archetype for antagonists. Mainly, men who think they are entitled to a woman just because they're attracted to her. There are other antagonists, it's not just a constant stream of misogynistic assholes, but it's close.
The pace is generally very slow, with time skips that work well, and ones that don't, to speed things up a little. If you start reading, expect to be reading a story about cute kids going on generous misadventures for the first hundred chapters.
There are continuity errors that indicate that the author is writing at full speed with little time for revision, but the author is generally receptive to constructive criticism.
The protagonist is generally immune to the worst fitness of protagonist induced idiocy, so there aren't a lot of idiot plot holes in my opinion.
Oh, and every other arc is had done dirty of tournament going on. Interestingly, the author doesn't waste time on plot irrelevant parts of the tournament, so that's nice. - PlatoRoyal Road★★★ 3.0This story just continued to frustrate me. It has some glimmers where it's interesting, but overall it's a complete miss. The cultivation aspect of the story is the worst offender, with people's levels and realms changing haphazardly. For example, Wu Taohua has had her cultivation level go up and down so many times I have no idea what she'll be at any given part in the story. There is no consistency to how people cultivate at all.
The plot is super frustrating as well, enemies are both equally smart and stupid in the same chapter. The author is trying to create suspense and intrigue but only manages to create unrealistic drawn out conflicts that make no sense.
The slice of life parts of the story aren't too bad, but would be better if Wu Jian didn't have the personality of wet bread. Wu Meiying, Hou Jingshu, and Zhou Linghua are fun to read at least.
Sadly, it's not nearly good enough for me to sit through the other nonsense. I just can't keep reading this story, it makes me want to rip my hair out. - malinizgeldiRoyal Road★★★ 3.0The person who sees the future is not mc in this novel, but his lover (both children). Because mc trusts his girlfriend, he doesn't shy away from what she says. and turns into the classic xullian series. xullian increases as the series progresses. I hope this series doesn't follow the motto of "continually fighting stronger enemies" in the future.
There is no "#harem" in the series. but there are 2 girls on the cover. I hope he doesn't go to the harem.
edit: harem# was there but I didn't see it. Or the author put #harem after my comment. However, if mc is so in love with fmc and is doing everything for him, if he can bring a "sand (a harem on top of his wife)", my score has dropped from 4 points to 3 points. i hate harem especially when in love with a mc wife. - Tim4Royal Road★★★ 2.5Please note that I have only reached the 32nd chapter, titled so far.
I'd call it a slow burn, but even after 32 chapters, I can't help but feel that I'm still in the prologue or chapter 1 of a book. It doesn't feel like I've reached the fun part of the story yet. It feels a bit cliche, but it's decent enough.
I personally haven't noticed any grammar or spelling mistakes if there are any, so that's plus.
With consideration that I believe I'm only in the intro chapters, I would have given this a 3.5 or 4 stars. Or more likely, I would have read further before giving a review.
Except that I find Wu Meiying really irritating. I can't put it into words, why, I just do. And as she seems to be the 2nd most important character, she occupies a lot of the work so far. So yeah, she drops the rating down a full 1 or 1.5 stars for me.
