- Fiona FairRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5An engaging story of personal struggle for redemption, powered by friendship! Or something like that. Two friends work to save one of them from the consequences of human weakness and probably will grow a lot on the way. It's hard to be sure at this stage, but it certainly has potential.
Story:
A girl travels with her best friend on a journey to a town that can't be found except by the evil or the desperate to break a curse that threatens to consume her. As the journey progresses, they discover the curse is deeper than a single person and dark forces are playing an unseen game.
It's a fantasy story with mystery and horror elements, slowly unfolding a larger story from the perspective of two village girls in over their heads but determined to try to the end. It's a bit early to tell how that will play out, but it could be really good or fall flat depending on how the mystery is revealed.
Style:
The story is still in the earlier stages, but could use a bit more time in between new pieces of the larger mystery in which the characters try to put the pieces together more actively. Aside from surviving and journeying, the main heroes haven't been active in hunting down the mystery pieces, merely stumbling across them. It feels a bit convenient in places, if not for the memory manipulation and secret forces clearly at work which can be blamed for that.
The author is clearly capable of slowing the story down for more processing since there are places, especially at the start, that feel peacefully paced instead of slow, giving the story time to sink in and for the reader to feel along with the characters. If the author can manage to lean into that mix of peaceful and creepy even more, then it'll has the potential to be really gripping.
The style of writing is very accessible. There is a variety of vocabulary and sentence structure without being overcomplicated. There are few signs of rushing in the more recent chapters where more elaboration would have been nice, but I expect - Blind_WatcherRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5I just want to be upfront that this type of story is not something i would usually read. I tend not to do well with suspense and horror undertones.
So with that out of the way, I think the story is very well written. The attention to minor details in particular is something I definitely appreciated. It's very easy to just leave some things out, but including something as small as the characters relief or joy at the prospect of a real bed after hard travelling, it really adds to the immersion.
I really liked the dynamic between the original duo and later the slightly different dynamic in the trio. It was very interesting seeing how their group dynamic shifted depending on who exactly was present at any given moment. Very nice to see characters willing to make hard choices that aren't just there to fit the narrative, and I respect that.
There are some minor grammatical errors, but nothing major. The author appears to be in the process of cleaning them up and is very positive about advice and feedback. So expect this element to improve over time.
Like I said at the beginning, this sort of story is not really something I would normally read. But I am glad I gave it a shot, definitely worth taking a look. - BullerRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5The summary of the story explains it well. We have the two characters on a journey to a place nobody can really tell the location of, yet still having heard of it. I initially imagined it as being a sort of wild goose chase, like a more serious version of El Dorado.
In a way, it partially did and did not meet those expectations. I cannot wholeheartedly say that this story is perfect, but it has elements in it that I don't detest. The idea about the main characters curse is a good one, even if the after-effects aren't put into words that well. It's interesting enough to continue reading.
Grammar is fine enough. Above-average even. I would overall give this story an 8/10. But with the rating system of RR, this means a 4.5/5 - ANCTRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5A classic fantasy adventure where two friend are out on a journey. There is a lovely dynamic between the characters as one suffers an affliction and the other takes care of them. Just edges of the world are being revealed, but it has some great potential.
Style: It is written like a traditional fantasy novel. A style I do enjoy, and the author brings a familiarity by the use of it. They do a great job making clear who is talking and whose perspective were currently looking through. There is a clunkyness that can lead to some jerky tranistion. Dialog can be a little silted.
Story: The plot so far is very interesting. How do you find a place that no one can remember where it is? Great idea to explore. I do wish that the focus could stay on the search for the destination, but understand there are other factors that need to be introduced.
Grammer: Spelling wise the author has done a wonderful job. Nothing really stuck in my memories on that. There is however an issue with run on sentences that can break the flow of the reader. A run through edit where you speak out loud the chapter would show some of the awkward moments.
Character: I love the two main characters. I look forward to seeing how the journey effects them and where they end up growth wise. I, however feel that Faolin is a character that needs some reworks as they come off poorly, from being overly childish to suddenly super compentdent. - Poached_EggRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5Mystery stories are kind of a binary experience: Either you are drawn into the mystery and the characters surrounding it, or you aren't. Personally, I was not grabbed by the mystery, but it's more a matter of taste than anything to do with the writing itself. I struggle to find an area where I can clearly state something that needs to be improved, because the writing is actually very sound. Typos are few and far between, I never once had a "double take" moment with the grammar, and the flow of information was smooth. The only criticisms I can give are based entirely on my personal tastes and wouldn't be very useful as constructive criticism for that reason.
Which is why I would still recommend this story, despite how it may sound. There's enough obvious effort and thought put into it that I think someone who is intrigued by the questions the story asks can be drawn in quite easily.
All in all, while it wasn't to my personal taste, it's absolutely worth a giving a try if you're intrigued by the premise. - incarnadineRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5Lianne and Amra, childhood friends, set off to find Clandemere, a place that (hopefully) can help with Lianne's curse. Along the way, they stumble upon Shadow recruits, a mysterious elf named Faolin, and a world of many, many secrets.
It is then that
it is revealed that Lianne's strange dark power a result of a revival ceremony gone wrong, and that Faolin's healing magic could keep it at bay and help them reach Clandemere.
A solid overall score of 4, with an addition 0.5 points added due to its sheer potential to grow out to be a riveting story.
The author's style is genuine and piques my interest, with nice prose and - as an added bonus - without a tendency to info-dump every few chapters. The world-building is woven through the nine chapters, with realistic dialogue, and, as I've stated before, a lot of potential.
The story's premise is interesting - Lianne's Ability being one of the darker ones I've ever seen belonging to a protagonist - and well-executed. The plot itself isn't too slow or too fast, the story starting off with a nice kick. The main constructive criticism I would give the beginning chapters, though, is that the tidbit of "Amra had a lot to go back to, but Lianne didn't feel like she had any reasons to return one day" is revealed a bit too early in the story for Lianne's character.
Faolin's character as an intriguing enigma is well thought-out, and Amra & Lianne's relationship well touched-upon - Lianne's backstory is also well-executed. I think that just the MC's motivations could be a bit more fleshed out.
A lot of potential packed in this story, though - good grammar, a nice style, an intriguing plot and premise, and overall quite decent. Good luck! - TrishRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0"Seeker of the Lost" is what I would call a bingeable story-- thus the title of this review. The style is straightforward if unvaried and predictable with snack-sized chapters, the grammar while imperfect is passable without too much consternation as a reader, the characters are entertaining and their relationships interesting, and the story is simple while still being compelling.
To summarize so far, Lianne and Amra are on a quest to find an unfindable city in an effort to relieve Lianne of a curse acquired when Lianne tried using dark magic to bring her brother back to life. Along the way, weird, creepy, and frightening things happen that drop little micro-clues about Lianne's curse and some greater evils loose in the world. The best friends pick up another companion as they travel, a quirky elf named Faolin (he happens to be my favorite character), who has his own dark past, quest to resolve, and mystery to riddle out. The deeper we get into the story, the more it would seem that Lianne and Faolin are linked by a common enemy.
Dun, dun DUUUUUNNNNNN!!
Enjoyable read if, like me, you don't have too much brainpower to spare and are seeking easy, escapist entertainment.
