- Pockamafu22Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0Good afteroon
I have just finished reading up to chapter 18 and thought that you might like an idea about a ship you can use for Dom's ship,
the ship that i would suggest would be either
USS Constitution or
HMS Victory.
Mabye HMS Victory could be his late story ship and USS Constitution his next after the small boat / dinghy he is using.
Thanks for the story it is great so far. - BurnNoteRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0As of chapter 13, the only aspect I can't judge yet is the overarching plot. Everything else is quite good, and I don't mean "for a free webnovel".
The sentence to sentence level is solid. You wouldn't read for the sheer joy of phrasings like with some authors (Pratchett for example), but it does a good job of painting the scene and getting the action across.
Something similar goes for the characters. The POV is actually a stand out: Capable at at what he does and able to leverage that, but not all-powerful. Smart, but it's not pulled out of nowhere. A conscious, and not artificial (have you ever had a scene where a character was just too guilty or callous or something like that? The reaction didn't feel right? Well, that's not here). Something he really wants, but clear road to get it. All the stuff for a really solid character (and arc).
The other characters aren't quite as developed. To be fair, it's first person and they obviously have less screen time, but some authors can create a memorable character in a single paragraph. So I guess I'll praise with faint damnation: It's not as good as the best I've read.
As mentioned, I can't yet judge the overarching plot. There's been some quite interesting directions, but it's still too early to say.
The scene level plot is really good though. It's probably the authors strongest point. I'll say this: In 13 chapters there've been 3 really cool scenes. Most stories (even good ones) can manage maybe one in three times the length.
If you like a story where the protag gets through his troubles by quick thinking and observational skill, you'll proabably get at least some joy out of this.
Also since this is a sailing story: I've no idea how realistic it is, but it seems pretty solid, so unless you're a sailor it's probably good enough.
Finally: The GameLit aspect is more of a background element than central story focus, at least so far. The author does a good job of integrating it into the worldbuilding, and does a fairly good j - king slothRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0i have always been a fan of the high seas love the story so far. i read in till chapter 14 and i need more lol
- Winged ThingRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.01; No-Isekai/Reincarnation/Other insert personality trope. The main character was born in the novel's world, he lives and breathes in it and he'll die in it. This gives a hell of a lot more credence and authority to the worldbuilding and the system elements.
2; Gives due respect to the Sea and Sailors through sheer authenticity. Author either has experience at sea or has done enough research and put the effort in to make sure their work feels just right.
3; Believable character growth, thoughts, speech and actions. On this point alone, this story is more than worth the read. Think 'Worth the Candle' and 'Mother of Learning' Stuff makes SENSE and flows properly.
Read it for yourselves. - unnatural20Royal Road★★★★★ 4.5So this is a fairly well written, original story, the entire thing is unique.
Now this story is not perfect by any Margin but its still good. This is a great idea with good execution.
The story makes sense on all but one front, but that's actually understandable considering
Its jones, a eldritch being
Overall a good read more than worth a your time. - SkrollzRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0Seaborn has some really strong points. The nautical theme feels fresh, the system is interesting and the characters are well written with their own engaging personalities. The thing keeping this from being a 5 star review is the drastic personality changes the main character goes through, turning him from a person i very much enjoyed reading about into someone i despise thereby souring the experience for me completely. To anyone without my personal distaste for that for that specific trope this should be an excellent read.
Huge thanks to the author, for even if I dislike some parts that does not make the parts I liked any less enjoyable 🙂 - Sam WilliamsRoyal Road★★★★ 3.5Honestly it was 5 stars before he made the deal with jones.
It was 4 stars until the navy came to capture him.
Idk what has happened but the last few chapters have been 3 stars tops. - Eritis sicut DiabolusRoyal Road★★★ 3.0Early chapters are quite excellent, but later chapters Domenic seems to lose what made him an appealing main character. The grammer is good and the worldbuilding is great, but the side characters are lacking and can't prop up the story with the collapse of the MC.
I don't think the story jumps ship with Dom making a pact with Davy Jones, I think that could have gone really well. I think its when he starts trying to build personal relationships at shore and the characters feel... not real at all. The prodigy children definitely seemed like the beginning of the end, there is a reason people don't like Wesley Crusher from Startrek. - DreamsRoyal Road★★★ 2.5First 14-15 chapters are some of the best writing on the site, afterwards not so much. MC has very little agency and quickly loses the things that made him interesting in the beginning. There's a very exciting promise of a fun swashbuckling tale in those first 15ish chapters but it never materialized.
Grammar is very good for RR though. Still think there is an actually good quality fantasy book here somewhere (which could be said for maybe a handful of novels total on this site)) but it needs a rewrite, and a developmental/evaluation editor. - EzaiahsRoyal Road★★ 2.0The story starts off on a high note, a grab to the attention and interesting details all the while to help seamlessly bring the reader into a world where rpg elements are reality.
Then it slowly built up to a massive apex of our MC saving princesses, fighting pirates to the death and even meeting with davey fucking jones himself. Nice!
All this action happens in around 14 chapters, a decently sized arc. Of course after something massive like that there needs to be down time in a story...a few chapters of getting ones bearing for sure.
But the problem is that nothing happens, well, things do happen but they are outside the MC's control or ability to influence. Which would be fine but we as the reader have no reason to care about the conflicts that are happening as for us these are just random gibberish names for gibberish places that exist.
Not to mention the MC goes from literally killing tons of high leveled pirates like they were nothing to running from shadows in an alley like a scared chick.
Its very jarring, like the opening of the story was just an attention grab for info dumps to come later on.
