Description

Adam Harris’s name has just appeared on a top secret list of extraterrestrial origin. Unbeknownst to him, he’s one of a handful of individuals capable of implementing a Save Point, a static moment in time he’s able to revisit over and over upon death.

It’s a good thing, too. Brain cancer was turning into a real bitch…

The government owns the list though, and they’ve wasted no time snapping him up. According to them, he has thirteen days in an alien realm to learn as much as he can before the inevitable, at which point his memories, Skill Progressions and Weapon Proficiencies will endure despite his body resetting.

Then it’s rinse and repeat.

But there are unwritten rules to the game he’s about to play, and unseen forces acting in judgment. Adam will learn the hard way that dying is the easiest thing he’s going to do today.

The short review is: Read it. It's good.
The slightly longer spiel... Sixteen chapters in and no complaints so far. Main character is enough of a gamer to recognize the situation. But he's not being too stupid. Okay, maybe too much of a smartass sometimes, but hey... He's just a guy with a tumor.
    Not OP. (Thank you.)
Cool way of blending sci if and fantasy. Aliens with sufficiently advanced... indistinguishable... Yadda yadda Yadda.
    Turning out chapters pretty quick.
Great grammar, editing, writing style, etc. If you care about those things.
And it's fun. Give it a try.

This is one of the few Royal Road novels which actively works to alienate its audience. Most authors are unwilling to take the risks that Matt has done here. The twist at the end is a killer. And you either love or hate him for it.
As I said before, worth buying, it's a wild ride!

The world building is well done but slightly confusing at times. I really wish the story would progress faster. Those 26 chapters all got the introduction feeling. Mainly because the protagonist doesnt change his mental state. He keeps lashing out at everything which i can understand for the first part. But he doesnt change beeing an asshole even once he realizes it just makes his situation worse. Also he describes himself as having experience with VR but is incapable of keeping his calm and weighing his options, or planning ahead. I really like the story but can't stand this MC for lashing out at everything and running head first into everything without even thinking about other options. He doesn't deserve the 7, a 3 would be more fair.
I really hope there will be some character progression :)

Being fully honest, I never really saw the appeal for it. Sure, the grammar was okay, and the style had that hint of sarcasm that I really cant say no to. But.... the story was just utterly and fully unappealing to me. There was nothing making me hold on to what I saw as a sinking ship into obscurity. Others seem to have liked this, so I'll hold that thought as I give it a rating. But, I just couldn't understand it, and much less how somebody saw it as the next Gam3.

This is a well written novel. Good story. There are only 4 chapters out for the moment, but it's really promising, and I already want to know how it continues.
The story has yet to truly take off, but I can already see that the writing style is polished, some mistakes, but nothing major. The author shows what is happening, not telling us. And I always have a mental image of what I'm reading.
Keep going, you are doing great.

It's not really VR though, but functionally it is the same. The story is comparable to The Gam3 a popular story on this site, e.g. there are some aliens and there's a high stakes VR game that all races participate in that is very important, although the 21 chapters I've read haven't explained exactly what the stakes are, it's clear that people are very serious about it... What sets it aside from The Gam3 is the significantly darker setting, and it's also got a lot fewer sci-fi elements involved, the game itself being closer to dark fantasy than sci-fi.
Now that we have comparisons out of the way, the story itself is half decent so far but extremely lacking in detail (deliberately) with fairly limited hints as to what's really going on, and I suppose it's meant to build some kind of mystery but I'm not feeling it that way, it's more like information is deliberately omitted for the sake of information being deliberately omitted. I suppose it's the author's way to avoid creating an infodump, but over 20 chapters he's had time to make the readers feel more informed, and several opportunities to do so have been missed already. That would be my biggest issue with this story but otherwise it's fairly enjoyable.
Then there are the characters, while better than in most novels around here I wouldn't call them good quite yet, it's like they're following template behaviors, it's just that their templates aren't japanese highschooler #46 and harem girl #3, instead they're more like asshole #2 and asshole #3. Then there's asshole #4 and throw in a few pretty girls here and there. In other words, the characters only seem good because of the contrast they create compared to the usual shitty story, but fair is fair, they're at least not as generic as many of us may have gotten used to, after all, there's a lot of different kinds of assholes in the world right?
Style is first person, nothing special about it, but nothing bad about it either, e.g. "just works", just the way I like it

Annoying main character, satisfying end. All in all, a good read.
If I would change anything in this story, it would in no doubt be most of the first parts of the main character and all of his stupidity...

Confused why a book like this is allowed on here, maybe it is just up temporarily?  If so I am happy to amend my review when the author adds some depth to this story, but as of right now I have read every word this author has typed on Royal Road and give it a generous review of 1 star.

Just take the story down if it's gonna be paywalled on Amazon, don't use RR as advertisement space..
