The story takes place in the Kingdom of Saubureau, beginning in Nochtarn, a dark and deep underground city. There, a lonely man named Edward struggles to scrape by through his investigative work, whether privately or for the police. When working with the latter, he must often face the injustice of the emotionless “Other Ones”, who care little for true justice and focus only on maintaining an image.
Let's get right into the ratings:
Style 4.5/5:
Sable is written in a clear yet evolving narrative. Depending on the chapter or scene, the story shifts between a descriptive writing style (e.g., during investigations), a more intimate one, and most importantly, a poetic one. The last one becomes a key part of the atmosphere in the later chapters of this Story.
The formatting throughout the story is also very well made. Dialogues are clearly separated and you can always keep track of who is speaking.
Later in the story, you will find POV-Switches. A refreshing detail that makes the narrative much more unique and enjoyable. Especially during fast-paced moments.
Lastly, the pacing. The story starts on the slower side, but picks up fast. A few very fast-paced moments are also present and very well placed. However, this is also where I have to deduct half a star. There is a particular section that feels slightly slower than I'd like. It is only a small dent in an otherwise near-perfect styling.
Story 5/5:
The story, along with the character writing, the strongest part of this work. The characters and places visited by the protagonist are well described, making it easy for the reader to depict the world. Using imagery to describe certain scenes also contributes greatly to that.
The investigations throughout the story keep you hooked and create a sense of anticipation for the resolution. There are lots of cliffhangers and plot twists that make it easy to lose track of time while reading.
But be reminded, as the author themselves notes, Saubureau twists into some
