- ShyaReads23Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0This is my first review on Royal Road and my first foray into the portal fantasy genre.
This is a story that rewards patience with an immersive world, relatable characters, and a magic system that feels grounded yet powerful. The narrative starts with a slow pace, maybe a little too slow. What begins as a slow burn, builds momentum, weaving in new layers of intrigue and action that make it increasingly difficult to put down.
The protagonist, Ben, is not what I had expected. His dry humor, self-awareness, and evolving sense of responsibility makes him feel more realistic. His relationships with the other characters feel well thought out and sometimes hilariously unpredictable, creating fun dialogues that contrast with the high-stakes conflicts.
One of the story's standout features is its magic system. It’s masterfully crafted, striking a careful balance between complexity and accessibility. Rather than overwhelming the reader with rules, it integrates seamlessly into the plot, enhancing the stakes and making the world feel alive.
As the world unfolds, it’s impossible not to be excited for what comes next. With its worldbuilding and rich character dynamics, Runebound: Rise of the Paladin is a journey well worth taking.
I also really enjoy how engaging the author is in the comments and authors notes. They keep things spoiler free but are always happy to chat with readers and communicate any schedule changes.
I can't wait to read more! - edkang99Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0I unfortunately don’t have more time for now to keep reading but I wanted to leave this review so others would give this a try.
If you’re looking for a fast-paced action adventure with murder logic, it’s not for you.
The best part are the characters and while some might not like the flashbacks they were the best part for me (won’t spoil why). It’s written in first person POV so you get into the MC’s head and I enjoyed that. I also immediately enjoyed the first characters he meets. Plus the female characters are written well. Strong but not girlbossy. They all make for great relationships
The humor is great. Especially when the MC goes off and his inner voices become their outer voice.
Like I said, for me the entire story is whimsical and has a solid foundation. The author’s writing significantly improves chapter to chapter, which is all we can ask for. Give it five chapters and you’ll know if this story is for you and then the pay offs start coming chapter 15. The action is all in the progress of the characters inner monologue and awareness and not necessarily the action. But there are some cool creatures and lore to enjoy. - scrigastRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0It's a fun story, with few errors in the writing. I like the the characters, the setting is interesting. I like what we've seen of the magic system so far, it feels real. As of this review we're still in the setup phase of the story, so I'll be keeping on eye in it to see how it develops.
- DarthbellRoyal Road★★★ 3.0Interesting start but quickly becomes hard to follow. Sort of Alice in wonderland style confusing setting with flashbacks I started to just skip entirely. I found myself skimming which made a confusing story that much tougher to follow. The characters are interesting but since I'm stuck thinking they are trapped inside a surrealism painting the characters and the story take a back seat. There's even a door mouse! The magic system seems cool but the setting keeps me from getting invested.
