Decades of hiding, and decades of surviving unnoticed, all ruined to give two otherworlders a second chance at life.
For almost half a century, Elijah had kept his Core sealed. It allowed him to stay in the shadows, to run his little alchemy shop on the outskirts of the slums without fear, but it also limited him. It made him weak. And when he finds two people half-dead in an alley, both too young to have had a chance at life, he removes the chains from his magic to help them.
The time to step into the light, to feel the call of the world, had come once more.
They had been hiding for long enough.

- BleedingTearsRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0The magic system looks deep, and I like the POV changes. That's always a risk on Royalroad, but they added more juice to this story. I've been a fan of 'Old Mentor' type of characters for some type, and though there are a couple of stories on RR that does this, this one has a different feeling to it that it hooked me right away.
At least read the first ten chapters before making a choice. I'll be keeping an eye on this one. - ColtraneRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Really love this setting!
feels gritty and realistic, great rules for the magic, and the growth and insights of the characters are satisfying to observe!
there is so much to it and it feels very well thought out. Fun to see isekai where the isekai’d characters aren’t the MC. 1 duck out of one. - RatGarglerRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0It so far has concrete world building, Especially the magic system, and incredibly good hook overall. The mystery is enthralling and immediate but not nonsensical. The POV changes are not jarring and useful to the story.
The main character is also very neat, a 70 year old bio mancer in hiding from something, proficient in alchemy, dealing drugs to homeless people ane owning a shop while still having good (ish) morals, risking himself for children he encounters in an alley. - RedDragonFanRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This is a great story. Elijah is an unconventional main character. He reminds me of war veterans who have seen a lot and want to forget it all but can't. His background gives exceptional explanations for how he is and his relationship with the world.
I love the weird relationship he has with Dawn. - WikineenieRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0A new favorite story of mine. It has everything I like. With a down to earth protagonist, with a kind heart. A action packed second storyline in the past which is getting revealed more and more, but still leaves a sense of mystery. High level political intriguing, with the intrigants still also being human. A magic system that hints to more than is shown. No endless numbers traits skills lists. A cute ducky which os learnings alarmingly fast.
Grammar and style wise the story is good. It reads easily the dialog is natural and so are the transitions between chapters. The author seems likely to deliver on interweaving all storyline successfully, using one to foreshadow stuff in the other and bring everything to a satisfying finale.
I like most characters. I like that the isekais are not the main protagonists. So far their story is least interesting to me as they don't feel like the most fleshed outcharacters yet, but that will come when I get further in probably.
What else can I say? This review is written around chapter 40 so I have half as long still to go before I catch up and by that time there will be more chapters as the author uploads at a high pace. - muloxRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I think the author should be saluted for his efforts to escape from trope lines, thanked for his obvious hard work at making something as difficult as a new blend, and congratulated for actually managing to produce something that goes well together with so many influences.
This work is mix of tropes with a new angle. Isekai? Yes but they are side characters. Discovering magic? Yes but it’s more rediscovering. Dungeons? System? All of that but just a pinch and always a little twist. Also a pinch of crime, a pinch of spy genre, of politics… And it works because it’s well made. It doesn’t go into depth. It not thousands of pages of careful mechanics, because it’s fast paced. And it’s good as it is.
To be honest I have to admit I was kind of annoyed by the two meh reviews that were thrown at this work at this point in time. I can accept different opinions, and reading their comments, I feel they enjoy darker works, and I understand they could be frustrated since this story would also have a lot of potential in their favorite genre. But it doesn’t change the fact that it’s a good story as it is, and shouldn’t be criticized out of misplaced annoyance.
First and foremost, criticizing the character building or their interactions is unbelievable for anyone that actually reads it. The author obviously made a very real effort to build original characters and not just graft previously seen ideas, effort that revealed actual talent at it since some of the twists are clever and original. It makes the backbone of the story, since they all are original enough to make predicting their behavior from your past experience with the tropes a waste of time.
Also, even though It’s more of a debatable topic, events are suddenly throwing people quite settled in their lives outside their comfort zone. I think the character interactions in these settings are perfectly believable as they are, since it depicts good decisions that are not optimal because of a lack of time.
Appart from that, I can - HaveFunRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5The premise of the story immediately caught my attention - old protagonist, healing magic, there's isekai but they are secondary characters!
Writing was easy to follow. The magic system was revealed slowly but also increasingly cool and complex. Magical companions is a trope I enjoy a lot and we got one here who was cute, scary and incredibly awesome.
I enjoyed the twists as the plot escalated, but wasn't really a fan of the politics ploys which resulted in too much loss of lives and destruction.
Looking forward to how the characters fare after the events of the first book - hope they'll have enough time to explore and relax. - Lord_GriseousRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5The premise of this story is refreshingly unique and offers a welcome break from the usual tropes. Unlike many other narratives, the main character is neither a young, inexperienced transmigrator nor someone who magically arrives from another world. Instead, the protagonist is an experienced alchemist who has deserted an army, adding layers of complexity and depth to their background. This fresh take is further enhanced by the presence of transmigrators within the story, which adds an intriguing twist and additional layers of story development.
The grammar in the story is quite impressive for a new work and shows promise for even greater improvement as the author continues to write. This attention to detail in language contributes significantly to the overall reading experience. The storyline itself is engaging and well-crafted, with well-developed characters who contribute depth and realism to the plot. The inclusion of multiple points of view is skillfully executed, serving to enrich the main storyline rather than complicate it.
Overall, the story is a very enjoyable read that successfully combines originality with strong character development and a coherent plot. I’m eagerly anticipating the release of the next chapter and am excited to see how the story continues to unfold in future updates. - necoRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0Honestly this could have been so much better without the otherworldlers. I don't care about them, I don't care about their history, their abilities or whether they will get back to earth. I don't even like them.
Everything else is very enjoyable, even the multiple povs from the non isekaied characters, though Sasha is sometimes ok.
It's like having a great story and then grafting on an amalgamation of a completely different genre and two characters that don't belong at all. - savethatprincessRoyal Road★★★ 3.0This novel is no masterpiece. Which is fine.
The problem starts when there are 3 pages worth of reviews and all of them have it at 4 stars, often even higher. Except one, who has some weird hangups on some specific grammar.
So I'm going to do my best to explain why the whole read was not that memorable to me, even after spending half a day or so with this novel.
It's mostly about the characters, and how they influence the story.
When you first meet Elijah and Aleksi, the Main Character and his Companion, you get told pretty early on that they are older, and hiding away from something. And this gets reinforced and re-told quite a number of times. Which is why the premise of the story, Elijah saving two people, is such a break with their usual, old life for them.
Which, it has to be said, is a good premise and one i did get behind.
It is a great source of (inner) conflict to see them agree that it might have been a bad idea to save those two, but that has happened and now to see if they can run with it.
They have set themselves boundaries while doing so. Agreeing they would flee the city and potentially the country if things got hot for them.
Which they never do.
Things continue to escalate from one of the neighbors alerting their mentor, a high ranking mage in a world where mages can identify other mages, or rather their specialization, on sight, to royalty themselves getting interested in the two Main Characters, which leads to (strongly implied) full background checks. One of the two people they saved, which are then hiding at Elijah's Shop, because ... reasons, even goes as far as attacking and injuring the 3rd prince.
Even with all of this, there are no consequences.
At all points do they talk about running away, at no point do they act. At all points they are scared of being found out, at no point anything happens.
One of the worst aspects about this is that it completely negates the characters they set up. Both of them are described as old, paranoid and prepare
