ROOK: The Subspace Thief

Description
Some people have nothing. Rook envied those people. As an orphan kept alive for the singular purpose of harvesting his daily coin, the gift from the gods to every living being with a heartbeat, he had less than even the poorest denizen of the lowest slum.
Beaten and abused for his entire life, Rook no longer even had dreams of a life of comfort. There was no escape from his life either. After all, life outside his village usually meant death at the claws of the terrifying monsters that infested the wilds.
Destined for a hard life and an early death, Rook encounters the mythical black skill stone and is offered a chance to change everything. A way to obtain anything he could imagine, but if he takes it, he would be stepping onto a path of unending danger and solitude.

- Lila WeylandRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This story has a unique setup of magic and skills that works well. The protagonist's abilities complement each other so well, and make me excited to see what he'll do with them in the long run. The dual-protagonist dynamic is really fun!
It has a somewhat slower buildup that took a while to properly hook me. The prologue was long and a bit confusing. I felt it was trying to do too much, too far in advance.
However, once things started rolling I was totally on board. The slow buildup is the strength of this story, because it lays down the foundation for what feels like a lengthy book series. The potential is so high.
I hope the author returns to this one eventually. I'd love to read more. - TheGreatDebatorRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I always find it interesting when magic is medium focused. Most stories are told through the eyes of wand users, staff swingers or card slingers but this all about coins. Very cash money. 16 chapters in and I’m smitten. Venti-grande rec! The pacing is on the right track and we have an MC that grows on you… like mildew. MC is a blank canvas with a talking faerie king as a companion, so the bromance that’s building is sure to be one for the ages.
- vennoRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0The cover and name of this story grabbed my attention. Didn’t expect much but gave it a go, and I’m glad I did.
It’s a bit different. People generate coins each day, which powers magic. It’s still a bit early.
Must admit, the MC is frustrating so far. I can’t really put it into words, it’s like sometimes he’s so dumb, other times he's the opposite. It’s not quite tracking for me. But tbh it’s a minor quibble, there are many stories I like that are way worse. At least in this one the writing is decent and the story is intriguing.
Well worth a read.
