- BatcardRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I have only seen 10 chapters and they are relatively short but that is my only complaint so far. I will continue to read it because it has made me invested in seeing what will happen next. The writing has no grammar errors.
- Roger Tavares MendesRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I see that it is already strengthening the Romans based on powerful humans that once existed in Middle Earth, but can still give powers or capacities based on Roman gods, examples of the ability of the forge given when praying to the Vulcan, powers of lightning, over seas or death to the to pray to jupiter, neturno and pluto, and other enhanced powers or capacities like agriculture, force. intelligence and military powers, each of these things related to a specific Roman god. To improve some knowledge or even clear up doubts or refresh your memory, I advise you to watch videos about this world, there are great videos that talk about gods to other creatures or the common history of the world and this can help you with the story of the author.

...................................................................... - Artorius AugustusRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0I love the concept of a military fiction with the Roman's in middle earth. I am really enjoying the main characters and the trajectory of the story. I think it's a great concept to explore and provides for some interesting what if scenarios.
I have read the whole thing so far and am anxiously waiting for the next chapter. It is a good fanfiction it's not to extreme and the author does seem to know a fair amount about the works of Tolkien.
If I was to nit pick, I would say the casualties suffered by the Roman's in their engagements is extreamly high. Armies cant sustain for than a 10% loss without it being very difficult for them to not rout in an engament, let alone function properly afterwards. Most armies suffered the high casualties after they already broken in battle and were being run down.
The army sizes are also very large for the various powers of middle earth. Especially the elves and orcs. The orcs having armies those large this early on would have caused serious troubles for the north and the loses they suffer by the Roman's would cause a pause in their strategic actions.
Some of the chapters in my opinion could be titled better. The terminology on how the Roman's refer to things could use some work, ie. "Gears" should be supplemented for arms and armour, "prince" should not be used to refer to a any Roman even one related to the Caesar, which basically is the first citizen. Roman's didnt have kings. I would recommend reading Livy and Plutarch on how they refer to things another good one would be the Aeneid by Virgil just to give some bases on how they spoke.
Maniples should be replaced with Cohort also Roman's wouldn't use the term shield wall that is something more akine to the Germanic peoples and later vikings and saxons. The legion and its various formations is a whole different animal.
At the end of the day it is a fan fiction and these are just some of the stuff I can see that I would nit pick on but I am really enjoying the story....SPOILERS - CazzTeteRoyal Road★★ 2.0Looks funny but the dialogue are horrible.
No break to understand who is talking, multiple " opening next of one another for the same person speaking, it's confusing.
Short chapters.
Check it. Personally I can't support the dialogues, but it looks funny. - HamsterDesTodesRoyal Road★★ 2.0The very least I expect from any military fiction is for the author to google "military units". For roman fiction, "roman military units" would have been a very good idea as well.
No, a legion is not made up of maniples consisting of companies which in turn are made of battalions. FFS! If the romans fight in Germania then we clearly are past the marian reforms, thus a legion is made of cohorts (roughly battalion - yes, battalions are bigger than companies!), which are made of centuries (~company) and contubernium (=squad). No maniple in sight!
It's just incredible jarring to read the confusing mess of unit sizes and then in the story, I always have to ponder what exactly the author means right now. Throws me out of the story completely.
I'm similarly thrown out by other 'roman' usage of things like titles. No, Rome of that time doesn't have a king anymore. There's no "majesty" - which would be wrong for a mere son anyways. Also no praetorian academy (that one really hurt, not gonna lie).
I probably came to the story after some editing got done, because I don't notice any awful conversations that other reviewers complain about. Sure, some awkwardness is very much still there, but really horrible. For a first-time author awkwardness is to be expected and the fact that he edited anything at all is great, so there's hope for the other stuff as well!
I don't know how good the actual story is, because I'm not far enough yet, but the very beginning hurt so much, I simply had to write a review to whine about it all. Hope it gets better soon, the premise is great!
