Description
Rogue's Gambitfollows John Bradford, an average man from Earth, who is suddenly transported to the world of Highcairn. In this strange medieval realm, magic and adventure are fading, and John quickly discovers that he's been brought here by Caelix, the God of Trickery. Caelix offers John a chance to return home to his family by winning a mysterious tournament held once every ten years. To do so, John must level up, gaining power and skills through combat and trials in this new world.
He's given the class of a rogue/thief, John quickly learns that leveling is slow and arduous for most people. However, he discovers an exploit in the system, so he can rapidly gain levels. As he refines this strategy, John becomes more powerful, but also more attuned to the complex politics and dangers of Highcairn. With the help of Kaia, a kind-hearted white mage, and Thorin, a loyal fighter, John navigates a world filled with bandits, goblins, and cryptic deities, while uncovering the dark secrets of his new home.
As John struggles with his growing powers and the possibility of returning home, he realizes that the fate of Highcairn may be tied to his success in the tournament. The absence of adventurers—legendary heroes from other worlds like him—has led to the world’s decline, and John's arrival may be the last hope to restore balance. But with a trickster god manipulating him and his own family still waiting for his return, John must decide whether his journey is truly about survival or something far more important.
The story blends witty humor, epic quests, and a system-driven fantasy world, exploring themes of sacrifice, destiny, and the price of power.

- BlakewolfRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Rogue’s Gambit is a sharp, witty LitRPG that blends genre-savvy humor with grounded storytelling. John, a middle-aged man yanked into a fantasy world by a minor god with questionable ethics, brings a refreshing voice—wry, practical, and deeply human.
The story balances solid pacing with snappy dialogue, gradually introducing mechanics, stakes, and a colorful supporting cast without info-dumps. Early chapters follow classic isekai beats—leveling, wolf hunts, magical surprises—but the execution feels crisp and character-driven.
What sets this book apart is tone. It’s smart, without being smug, emotional without dragging, John isn’t a wish-fulfillment powerhouse—he’s figuring it out one sarcastic quip at a time, and that makes him easy to root for. - CKJ5Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0Rogue’s Gambit is a progression LitRPG featuring action, adventure, and comedic elements, with a male lead.
Story
The story begins with protagonist John Bradford being transported—Hawaiian shirt and all—into a new world by the God of Trickery, Caelix. I appreciate the setup here; many portal/LitRPG stories gloss over how the protagonist actually arrives in the fantasy world. This introduction also provides a strong hook, leaving readers to wonder about the true motives behind John’s summoning as the story unfolds.
John is a likable and relatable protagonist, though he seems a bit too relaxed about his situation for my taste. That said, his easygoing nature contributes to the story’s fun, lighthearted tone.
Overall
So far, Rogue’s Gambit is an enjoyable LitRPG that delivers familiar genre elements with a few fresh twists. If you’re a fan of witty protagonists, immersive settings, and classic LitRPG progression, this one is worth checking out. I’ll definitely be keeping an eye on it. - Moonbeam1983Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0I'm biased as I'm the wife of the author, but you should read John's adventure! It's a clever take on a new up and coming genre. Litrpg opens the fantasy world to whole new adventures and this author has a firm grasp on exactly how to do that in Rogues Gambit. Give it a shot!
- SuperscribeFromTheQuasiFutureRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5From what I’ve read so far, this is an engaging blend of humor, action, and world-building that pulls the reader into its vividly constructed setting. The protagonist, John Bradford, stands out with his sarcastic wit and relatable internal dialogue, offering a fresh take on the "ordinary-person-thrust-into-extraordinary-world" trope.
John's personality shines throughout, particularly his humorous observations, pop-culture references, his commentary about Hawaiian shirts, '80s montages, and his disbelief at RPG mechanics. The sequence with the wolves and goblins shows John's progression as a fledgling adventurer, balancing action with tension. The setting feels alive, from Bjornfell's streets to the dangerous forests. The inclusion of the gods and the looming tournament adds depth to the story's stakes, making the world feel expansive and layered.
My only concerns were the occasional lack of clarity in action sequences and missed opportunities to explore John's emotional struggles. While his humor is a major strength, moments delving into his homesickness or the emotional shock of his situation could make his arc even more compelling. Likewise, some fight scenes were a bit hard to follow.
Yet, it’s an enjoyable take on the LitRPG genre that doesn’t take itself too seriously while still providing enough stakes and mystery to keep the reader invested.
Looking forward to seeing how John navigates this world, tackles the tournament, and (hopefully) finds his way home! - Zer0n1gh7sRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0This story could be amazing. The author has good pacing and a good style overall, but it needs serious work to turn it into a web novel. A lot of the formatting, thought bubbles, and general description of the surroundings needs more work. A prime example is '
The rabbit and the forest. The description of the forest was basically - endless forest (Lots of trees) and smells of pine. and no real description of the rabbit to add to the intensity. Just a rabbit appeared, sharp teeth.
'.
Once the author gets some editing work in, this could be a great story to read.
