Believe it or not, this is my first Etzoli fiction. I’ve been on Royal Road for something like three years now, and it took me all the way until 2022 to finish any of her stories! Obviously I’m going to read a whole lot more, though, because Riposte seriously made me happy every time I read it.
An underrated gem you need to try out immediately!
I’ve said this about great complete books on Royal Road before, but more than any other before it, I really have to say that Riposte does not deserve to be on this website; it’s a fully fledged young adult urban fantasy novel with a ton of thrills and would look super good on any local bookstore shelf. As of this writing, it hasn’t caught on at all with readers, and that’s a huge shame because it’s good enough that you’d have thought it would just naturally catch on. Honestly, Riposte not being popular yet is probably good material for an essay about the way that modern algorithm-based discovery systems don’t do justice to the actual discovery part of finding new stuff to love, but that’s a whole separate thing and oops I went off on a big tangent.
Anyway, this book’s real good. It’s set in near-future Portland, Oregon, starring a young teen, unwilling celebrity with a new foster father to deal with, a new mansion to live in, and a brand-new school to go. She doesn’t enjoy this new life at all, but then she ends up discovering something that changes her life—a magical collectible card game that can grant any wish. As you might expect, the game’s a lot less benevolent than it initially seems. It always is with wishes...
Basically, the story is the closest thing to an American adaptation of Madoka Magica (coincidentally my next GL review!) that I’ve read yet. It takes the essence of that series, about teens dealing with their emotional and personal probl - CouncilheartsRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This is an exceptional story. The characters are complex, and multi-sided. Noel is an excellent narrator, and her circumstances lead her to a sharp, critical eye throughout the story that I greatly enjoyed.
I enjoyed your introspective approach to character building, and the brilliant way you built up tension throughout the story. The ending was a brilliant moment, that I feel leaves enough room for people to discuss the ethics and morality of the characters.
Grammar was spot on, the descriptions of the game world's were brilliant. As usual with your writing, you describe enough that the reader understands what's happening, but not enough to answer all our questions, and leave us with thoughts and doubts throughout the story.
Would recommend, thanks for all your quality writing.
Realised that I can't paste my earlier comment as it's loaded with spoilers... Oops. - DroughtbringerRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0It would be easy to call this story something like "Yu-Gi-Oh" but serious, with beautifully written characters and intense emotional drama, but that would be a disservice to this story.
There is, to my knowledge, nothing out there that you could compare this story to and end up with a good example of what you're getting yourself in to.
Like the Etzoli's other stories (having read two, Epilogue and The Last Science), Riposte is set on Earth with Low Fantasy magic, but the focus is on characters; their relationships, virtues and vices, rather than the magic itself.
The magic of this world comes from the card game Riposte, but really just exists to highlight the struggles of Noël, and the other characters. Riposte has deep struggles, and plays with themes of cost and wishes.
The struggles of the characters feels real and relateable. It isn't the story of someone struggling against aliens or monsters, but of a young girl who just wants to see her parents again.
If you want an intense, emotional drama that will have you on the edge of your seat, then this is the perfect story to you. There may not be wizards throwing around magic, a leveling system, or any other cliche common to RR, but Etzoli manages to capture magic in these word nonetheless.
