Description
Life has always been a battle, but for some people that's especially true. Not everyone can take living another day for granted. And that wasbeforethe world started ending. Now that the [Trial] is here, and everything is going up in flames... well, life isn't getting easier. That's for certain.
Trapped in the [Trial], John is faced with a painful reality: If he wants to live, he has no choice but to climb. And if he wants to survive for the long term, he needs to keep on climbing. Even if that means heading directly into danger.
.......
Dungeon/Tower climbing premise with a progression LITRPG focus. Not extremely fast-paced. Not a Super-OP MC. Intended for those with (or those who can relate with) chronic health problems.
Originally being written in the hopes of completing Book 1 before November 14th (World Diabetes Day) but I missed that by a longshot so at this point maybe by World Diabetes day next year.

- skaraRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0The system apocalypse novel I didn't know I'd been hungry to read. Offers exactly what the summary promises, and then some. One hundred percent worth the time I spent reading it, and probably even the additional time I will now spend thirsting for updates (TvT).
I particularly love how much the protagonist struggles with ordinary problems made terrifying by his current context. A lot of novels in this genre try to up the stakes with constant crazy do-or-die events without actually conveying a sense that the MC is clinging to their life by the skin of their teeth, or just numbing the reader with more and more action, but this story manages just the right balance, while also weighing him down with issues anyone can relate to. Like being bored enough that he takes dumb risks (my interpretation of some choices he made earlier, lol), or just being tempted by junk food that he can't safely take comfort in.
All in all, I liked it, and I can't wait to read more. - LordamnesiaRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I love the juxtaposition of a blue box tower climber and someone who's barely not dying every day, it's a breath of fresh air! The MC is engaging, but has that ting of desperation and despare that makes this story so relatable to, because let's be honest we all know of/are a diabetic. Keep up the amazing work!
- QueenInRagsRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0An Absolutely Splendid Novel So far.
A first-person perspective story about a man with a crippling chronic disease this book really takes a perspective that I haven't seen most take. The logic behind the motivations and ideas of the main character is compelling and understandable. Im even loving the monklike progression that's going on here, something that I haven't seen explored too much. I just hope that in the end the story doesn't take a strange twist from what it is atm and turn into the whole " OMG HE WENT THROUGH THIS AND NOW HES SOOO OP WATCH HIM BECOME GOD OR SOMETHING " fantasy.
Grammar wise this story has been incredibly consistent and smooth to read. I love the style myself. I have only found one spelling mistake within the first 20 chapters and that goes a long way in my book.
Character-wise, so far Im in love with the world presented by the author. Although the first arc was really devoid of any real supporting characters the priest introduced in the second arc is * Muah ! And from what we've been introduced to the third arc has a creepyish vibe that Im expecting a lot out of.
Overall Id rate this a good 9/10 cats, Great Job Author !!! - WitherRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Pretty cool story filler filler filler filler filler filler filler filler filler filler filler filler filler filler filler filler filler filler filler filler filler filler filler filler filler filler filler filler filler filler filler fillerfiller filler filler filler filler filler filler filler filler filler filler filler filler filler filler fillerfiller filler filler filler filler filler filler fillerfiller filler filler filler filler filler filler filler
- bored oblivionRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I just really like this story dont know exactly what makes it appeal to me so much but my guess is partly how hard the main character works to survive in spite of the situation they are in. Any power that they have accumulated feels like they earned it. They grow not just in power but also as a character. There weakness just doesn't instantly go away instead being a real thing that continues to hold them back and make them work harder to overcome it.
looking froward to more chapters fingers crossed that it actually finishes too many great novels on this site just go on hiatus - AsassinDeadRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I really enjoy this novel because the main character seems like a real person he doesn't always win or get the best rewards and follows a logical train of thought to get to his solutions. He also doesn't have abilities or powers just handed to him and based on the current chapter (35) he has worked for the abilities he has and lost resources because he does not yet know the rules of this place.
- jessicaroyaleRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Reviewed at chapter 31, nice slow build into a tower climber type story with the added twist of the protagonist has a disability.
Grammar is better than 99% of everything else on royal road. Author is obviously a native speaker with a decent education, so no complaints there.
Story setup is pretty much what you'd expect from a tower climber. No suprise twists, and the author takes a realist approach where the MC doesn't just badass his way through violent challenges. Handles it pretty well, but the action sequences are a pretty deep departure from genre conventions.
Style is first person, and done well. Narrated with enough personality you feel like you know the guy at this point, which leads into the character portion.
Character development of the MC is phenomenal, since its a tower climber most of the other characters haven't really stuck around enough to matter. It appears to foreshadow some inter-climber interactions later in the story. I'm hoping so longterm, otherwise it's a little too much of a one man play with NPC's as scenery.
I'm not diabetic, but my family is chock full of them, and the pervasive nature of the disease where they have to constantly monitor food intake and blood sugar levels with an amputated foot or death just a snickers away at any time was captured perfectly. As a high school science teacher, I understand how biofeedback mechanisms spur insulin production in non-diabetics, and the role insulin plays in maintaining homeostasis. Type 1 diabetics either don't respond correctly, or at all. To me, the 'miracle' seems plausible enough I kind of expected the treatment of the disease to be a gimick, but it's had a lasting impact on the story, and I think the author has done an amazing job of handling it.
edited this review after I read some of the other reviews, because I disagreed with at least one of them. YMMV. - eric_riverRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5This is not a tower crawler like you are used to
the things this gamelit story does uniquely are not few
the plot is quite compelling and intense, and it's well paced
the lead's decisions mostly make sense in the trials he's faced
The story seems like standard tower, survival gamelit
each floor has some blue screen quests to go along with it
but there's something deeper in the way the story goes
the system seems much deeper as the story twists and flows
Rewards all feel earned and nothing comes easy in this book
at the end of every trial, there is a toll it took
decisions carry weight and they are very well thought out
there is careful planning behind this without a doubt
The lead did plan ahead but he's a quite forgetful man
he hasn't used much of his planning since the trials began
he makes full use of every system benefit he finds
of all the leads I've read he has one of the sharpest minds
Still he comes across as realistic, not perfect
he deals a lot with hard decisions and inner conflict
he finds himself in cliche situations that feel strange
and recognizes when he has to break the mold or change
The world building is awesome and super captivating
I can't wait to find out more about what is happening
the lead has been the focus so far, few side characters
(one of which is named after one of the book's readers)
The style is still evolving, but it's usually concise
I've tripped over a couple little typos once or twice
there's some style choices in formatting that I quite liked
sometimes prose gets centered for effect, which got me psyched
The grammar works but needs some cleaning up before too long
just some missing words and typos, there's not too much wrong
it doesn't detract from my enjoyment of it all
it's an easy read, and so far it has been a ball
Overall I really like this new unpolished gem
this book will soon be ranked up there with the best of them
if you like a survival, gamelit, or a well done plot
give this contemplative and unique fiction a shot - ttsRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0So this is a system intro + apocalypse + tower climber LitRPG, which are normally fast paced races to OP-ness, but its a much more slow take on the genre which makes it somewhat refreshing and interesting.
The author slowed it down by making it much more about survival and adapation due to the MC's health condition and his struggles to not only climb the tower but to just make it through. Which normally would be rather ho hum and boring but works out rather well due to a very realistic and practical presentation of the MC's actions when dealing with adversity. So far there haven't really been any huge epic battles the MC has participated in (quite the opposite!) but there has still been plenty of suspense, danger, and interesting world building as well as some character growth going on.
There are stat points and levels but its not really a "crunchy" story per se. There doesn't seem to be hit points or stat bars. So far in story people and monsters can't take hits to the head and just shrug it off and keep fighting without issue: if a single blow to the head would kill you IRL, no matter how strong you are, it'll kill you in the tower too. Not much of anything regarding major magic so far but its still early in the tower for our MC.
A minor nitpick: while some of the introspection chapters are understandable and actually fairly realistic (the MC is often locked up in self doubt and frustration early on) its a little repetitive and boring to read at times. Just power through those chapters, it gets much better as you go.
If you like a fast paced story you won't like this at all but if you're looking for a change of pace this could be for you.
Grammar and such are fine for a free web serial.
Mostly just wish there were more releases but so far the author has been able to do pretty good there too so I'm just being greedy. - sohexRoyal Road★★ 2.0Any story is fundamentally a transaction between author and reader. The author offers something compelling as an incentive to suspend disbelief, the reader buys into that conceit and enjoys the story. I can't bring myself to buy into this story. Maybe it improves vastly in quality down the road, that would be wonderful, but it won't change the fact that the beginning completely soured me on it.
The prologue chapter made me apprehensive, the background details rubbed me the wrong way from the get go, but I persevered. I love a good tower climb story, so I was willing to give a lot of latitude. Then the story actually got started and just like that I was done.
It's a natural thing to give a character a problem at the start of the story to establish need and drive, it creates tension and compels you to keep reading to see how it's resolved. The problem the author chose for this MC, however, has no workable resolution. Either it gets resolved down the line by way of magic or plot contrivance and completely invalidates the struggle up to that point with regards to it, or it doesn't get resolved but the MC is able to manage it which strains credulity far past the point where it's snapped.
