- tutpuppyRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0A fantasy story about a woman who still loves her utterly detestable family. She also has some utterly detestable classmates, but not all of them. The plot doesn't seem to be cookie cutter trope-based; I can't really tell where the story is headed. I look forward to finding out.
Also, more words to hit 50. - Toby ZieglerRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0What a strange magical world we discover in Relic Heirs.
This isn't a D&D knockoff, at least to my mind. It is instead a look at magic inherited through generations to fight an unending horde of hate-driven monsters. Plus the ones who aren't human.
The politics, social pressures, family dynamics and opressive environments bring the feels to the fore quickly and heavily in this story. Our main character seems to have very few people in her corner. I found myself rooting for her and wanting to be in her corner to support her.
Definitely a recommended reading. - Quantum MechanicRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I've spent a lot of my teen years reading a lot of stories, and it's hard for me to find that spark again, but these stories are really able to grab my attention and I'm always interested to see what happens next! Keep up the good work and I can't wait for what the future brings!
- eris235Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0With 'Book 1' just finished, I'm left feeling like Relic Heirs is something I'd buy at a bookstore.
The world is an interesting take on the magical school setting. Feels somewhere between a Sanderson world/story, Harry Potter, and a DnD game.
And it feels realistic, despite the presence of magic and these ancient powerful weapons, whose presence is well woven into the story setting. It’s not ‘just’ a fantasy world, but one that feels shaped by its unique aspects. The sentient magic weapons are attention grabbing, but the roving titanic monstrosities don’t just feel like DnD monsters for adventurers to grind levels on, but an established threat that has shaped the culture.
Overall though, the Characters are the standout; much like the fantasy greats, characters are believably complex, while simultaneously having clear motivations and characterizations well communicated to the reader.
And, while I do also love sprawling webfiction, with world-shaking protagonists, Relic Heirs reads more like a traditional novel. It's focused and grounded. The worldbuilding is unique, and elevates the story for sure, but the narrative focus is on Briddy's character arc first and foremost.
And in that, it turns out a sweet magic sword isn’t particularly helpful if your main problem is that you have a shit family. - kleptomaticRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Excellent story, probably one my favorites of all time on this platform, up there with some of the top rated overall stories on the leaderboard.
You may go into this thinking that this will be "just another magical school story," but the story is so much more than that. It's about family (or lack thereof), perseverence, and making your own way. Which may sound pretty sterotypical, but the story is so much more than a stereotype.
A lot of fics on here also play into the "OP MC" archetype, whereas this story plays into the opposite. Even in some of the more known fics where the MC starts out weak, they typically become incredibly overpowered. This does not happen here.
The characters are extremely well fleshed out and their traits carry through the entire story. Growth in characters is apparent, but there's just no redemption for Niles. I really hate him, but that's what he's there for.
There's just enough intrigue and enough resolution, yet room is left for a sequel.
Into the spoiler section we go! (Spoliers for later in the story + major character changes)
I think one of the best parts about this story is that death hits you. It feels real, such as Hennigan. He may hate Briddy, but does he really? That's not really resolved, or maybe I glossed over that.
But the fact that a prevalent character was killed off in a blaze of glory that allowed Briddy to grow is excellent. I've read too many fics where nobody of note has been lost, or the number of deaths is too extreme.
You're not meant to like Titanium Kerr, but you can't help but feel bad for him when he is brought to the brink of death. And then he goes back to his normal self - he is difficult to change, like titanium.
Seeing Briddy become her own person with Vexla - and then realizing that Kerr still sees it as his own - that is crushing, and leads into the future of the story.
Anyways, that about wraps up my review. Go read it - you won't regret it! - TealiciousTeaRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5Very character-focused and on character relationships. The first four chapters on our mc and her family. At chapter five we transition to her school and the relationships she makes there. Grammar is good and the style is descrptive. Overall pleasing to a YA crowd, I think with an original story and setting.
- cucioRoyal Road★★★ 3.0There's two ways of rating this work.
It would be a disservice to fellow readers looking for new novels if I awarded it more than three stars, meaning this is an ok work, and its first book is complete, which is no mean feat, but it has a lot of problems: characters are pretty unidimensional, it's full of gratuitous angst, action scenes are utterly confusing and the author's valiant attempts to write rich prose are, for the most part, unfortunately unsuccessful.
But a lot of hard work and budding talent went into finishing this book, and it wouldn't be fair if that wasn't acknowledged. Like their protagonist, I'm sure the author will grow splendidly to become a fully fledged writer. Thanks for sharing and good luck with future projects!
