Description
Man, can't the world just end right about...
Now.
...
I was having a bad day. A bad few months really. And I couldn't help but make that wish, only for it to be granted. I know that's not why it happened. Reality does not bend to my desires, and even if it did, I was mainly joking. But still, it feels a bit weird for the timing to be so perfect.
What I didn't wish for however, is to be turned into a bloody horse.
Why?
Just...Why?
I was left to ask that question as I watched the entire world collapse. An event that changes everything, all of my problems gone, but exchanged for other ones. And it's hard to call them any better than the last. Most people that you ask... won't give you an answer because they're dead, orsomethingelse.
But those that can answer, I'm willing to bet they would wish to go back to simpler times.
I see their point, so many creators killed, their works forever left unfinished, stories that shall never conclude. I am left to eternally wonder if that fictional god was ever slain, or if those devils and angels ever have that bloody orgy.
So regretful it is, the loss of literature.
But I have to admit, there is one benefit that I love about this entire development.
Magic.
Levels.
Evolutions.
I failed to conquer the world of theater before, nothing but a hobby really.
But this time, I shall succeed. My dream shall no longer remain an illusion.
Let it be born. The strongest horse to ever walk among existence.
What to expect:
FIGHTS. Where being a horse matters.
EVOLUTIONS... a bit rarer. But big events when they do happen!
FRIENDSHIPS. Deep bonds between unlikely people... And Horses!
HORSE.Horse indeed.
TEAM TACTICS. Not that OP of an MC. Friends that can more than keep up.
AND MUCH MORE. Much, much more.

- BananaDragonRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This is a super fun litRPG about the main character turning into a magical horse. Yes, a literal horse, and yes, you should read this.
Style: Short, concise, tons of profanity, and incredible funny. It's written in 1st person present/past (it tends to shift a lot), and the style really makes this a very fun read.
Story: For such a strange (but hilarious) premise, I do wish there was a little bit more explanation given about why everything has happened. It is relatively early, but we haven't seen the MC do much outside of the basics like fighting, class selection, etc. I am kind of confused how Jackal wasn't harmed prior to choosing all of his classes, since there were a ton of deadly predators around him. That being said, I don't think this hinders the story much; it really shines in its unique story telling voice, MC, and the overall aact that he's, well, a horse.
Grammar: Didn't spot any errors that took me out of the story. Some issue with present and past, but nothing significant. It's a webnovel, so I'm not going to dock it much.
Character: Only the MC has been introduced so far, but he's very enjoyable. While he isn't an intelligent, cunning MC, he isn't one that feels exhaustingly stupid or annoying ot read. He's easy to support because of his incredible interior monologue and hilarious personality.
I'd definitely check this out! If you don't then... neigh? - ChalwasRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Among the sea of litrpgs on Royal Road, can't say that I've seen one that features a horse before.
But, weirdly, it kinda works.
Style: This is a very competently written work. Style and humor in droves, and the system notifications/screens are well-organized and easy to read. Designing a notification system that doesn't get in the way and can be parsed at a glance is hard, but it's done well here.
I will say that, at times, the character's thoughts mix with the narration in a way I'm not fully sure the author intended, and that can lead to some awkward, unclear sentences. Nothing too bothersome in my opinion, though.
Grammar: It's good, but fairly often the author will switch tenses mid-paragraph. I had to pause for a half second or two quite often to reorient myself.
Story: As of this review, I didn't see much in the way of an overarching story, but litrpgs are pretty often longform. I'm not going to sweat the lack of a big villain waiting in the wings to assault our equine friend within the first seven chapters.
And since I don't know where else to put it, I'll gush about the system here: I love it. Any system where skills can be combined and effects stacked, it's just...chef's kiss.
Character: I'm not overjoyed with the kind of character our mc is as of now, but I can't disparage him at all. He's full of personality, the author's style giving him life. A good character, even if I, specifically, can't call myself a fan.
So, in the end, I think you should give this thing a shot. Hilariously absurd premise, a fun read (so far), and it doesn't take itself too seriously. - M.G DriverRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0LitRPG? Meh.
Class system? Hmm..
Attacked by monsters all around? Okay...
MC turns into a fucking hellspawn horse that shoots fireballs while galloping? YEAAA!!!
Seriously, brilliant LitRPG, read all the way to the latest chapter in one sitting. A fair amount of horsing around with a few emotional climax to really kick the entire thing into place.
Style:
First-person POV of a magical pon- I mean hellspawn fireball-slinging gambit-kicking horse is already 5/5 for me. Thoughts and dialogue are clearly separated, action sequences are smooth and clear. Nothing I read was able to shake me off this ride.
Story:
It's not all fun and games when the MC is horsing around - there's this underlying grimdark understanding that the monsters he is defeating are not what they seem. This helps to add a slight undertone of continuous tension throughout the story thus far.
Coupled that with the emotional interactions the MC has with other characters and you see more of this "horse-eat-otherthings" world come into play.
Grammar:
Not a native English speaker, but 5/5 for me. No errors that I've seen so far.
Character:
The MC isn't perfect, and he isn't well-off either. His actions, dialogue and thoughts are all aligned perfectly with that starting premise, along with a few jokes that makes his character well defined from the get-go. It makes the horse feels like a real human!
There wasn't much exposure for other characters except his first friend, but even the emotions broiling in that friend was very well explored sufficiently to help the reader feel grounded.
Overall, great read - a genuine horse comedy mixed with a few dark undertones that really sinks in once you stop to think about it. A weird wacky world! - OnicRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This story is criminally underrated!
Story. The story will follow our failed theater actor—don't tell him because he'll cry again—who was transformed into a MAJESTIC horse after an apocalyptic disaster occurred. He needed to become stronger with his new body in order to survive the test of the new version of Earth he is inhabiting. The story is amusing as it follows Jackal horsing around. However, don't be fooled by the story's beautiful mane; beneath it lies a grim truth.
It's all fun and games on the surface, but the stakes of the world are slowly unfolding in the background without anyone noticing unless they read carefully. You will be left with questions about morality, action consequences, and most importantly... Is Jackal just really killing monsters for survival, or has he become a monster himself?
Look! What a witty horse! Let's get back to the funny horse horsing around and forget about the lingering doubt! No, seriously, the world building in this story intrigues me; this is what an apocalyptic setting should be!
Style. The story began slowly, as is typical for the genre, but once it began to move, it will gallop at a steady pace. I have no complaints.
Grammar. I have found no grammatical errors.
Character. Jackal is a train wreck disguised as a horse. He's the MC and comic relief to balance out the grim background around him, so it's very satisfying when he blends into the main theme like a dark horse.
Jackal is a gray character; you can't expect him to always do good or act pure evil, which makes you question his morality at times, but that makes him very interesting— you never know what he's going to do next, and once he does something you don't agree with, you can't completely berate him because you know he's right... You simply cannot accept his way of doing things.
Okay, I'll say it: gray characters are my favorite characters to read and write about. And Jackal is a good example of one; he is neither sadistic nor kind; he is simply apathetic.

Jokes aside, this is an all around great Monster Evolution story. The writing style is easy to read and grammar is practically flawless.
The descriptors of the characters and world all combine to make to make unique mental imagery in the story. One of the things the author does quite well is adding color and magic to the world without making it one-note. A lot of post-apocalyptic books have a fairly narrow vein that they draw from in terms of what monsters and how everything looks. Not so for the author. Also, the line between monster and human with the addition of classes is blurred, which is really nice to read, as I always find it kind of silly when there is such a marked difference between the two (example: rotting zombies vs. valiant white slashes by the fiery-armored human).
The comedy is really nice. The author excels at making the fights both comedic and intense.
The fight between an oversized hamster and Jackal, a horse, is a perfect example. It is very obviously life-or-death, but pitting the two against each other... I mean, just imagine. It's hilarious!
The character of Jackal is easily likable, as is his friend Flaze (who comes into play later in the story). Their interactions are really nice and funny, and they don't just randomly join strangers to fend off against the apocalypse. They strike it alone together, relying on each other. If I had really searched for some criticism, there is not a clear objective besides survival. But on the other side of a coin, that can still come later.
I hope that they learn to fight together, side-by-side, as the story progresses. Looking forward to the next chapters! - drewhead118Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0A fun litRPG with a certainly eye-catching premise: the main character has (inexplicably) been turned into a horse. Some might ask if that makes for too strange a premise to buy into, but to those people, I say neigh.
Style score: The story's presentation is clean, and its stat blocks, neatly structured. The authorly voice is both strong and fun, but character thoughts leak a bit into scene narration, which can be mildly confusing for the reader.
Grammar score: very clean across the board as far as general mechanics go, but there are a few tense issues where the author seems to flit back and forth between past and present tenses. Outside of tense issues, the rest is all looking pristine.
Story score: the premise is fun in its absurdity, and the abilities/skills/classes are all creatively rendered. I get the feeling that the author could make for a good D&D dungeon master, if they were so inclined.
Character score: the main character is maybe not yet the most likeable to me, but he's at least richly realized, coming to life through colorful phrasing and plenty of thought-narration. He's got personality to him that feels solid, which is important for any first-person-narrated tale.
Overall, a lively story that manages to transcend its intentionally absurd premise and become something fun, even if not particularly sophisticated. - Eric VanderlipRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Horse Magic is monster Evolution LitRPG adventure set in a magical apocalypse. An "event" has monsterize the majority of the population, killing the rest while giving magic powers to a select few. The protagonist, Jackal Dolmer, isn't the select few. He is a monsterize horse that somehow retained his will. Very intriguing premise
[Warning, if you can't handle the occational horse joke, this might not be the right fiction for you!]
Style: a consistent perspective and very smooth writing. No complaints
Story: Conversation and events flow flow naturally (or as naturally as they can in this absurd setting). Trully first-rate except for one single element that I must talk about.
In chapter 2, Jackal observes a woman run away from a pack of rabid cat-headed dogs only to be carried off by a two-headed eagle the size of an elephant. Then, right after establishing there are flying monsters, Jackal leisurely explores and allocates his classes/stat points over the next 3 chapters in a roofless appartment building. Not to mention that pack rabid cat-headed dogs, which don't sniff him out over this multi-hour process (it takes till midnight!).
Not only is the lucky to point of disbelief (the woman should complain about the unfair treatment), but Jackal never once shows any fear of being attacked despite the surrounding monsters, including giant crabs. His leisurely pace belies his dangerous new surroundings.
This could easily be mitigated by a few tweeks:
1) Make clear that Jackal is watching the sky and only galloping around the roofed portions of the appartment building.
2) Have the cat-headed dogs track him out (scaring him), but turn away for some reason (maybe the odor of his poop? or another monster chases them?)
3) After seeing giant crab, have Jackal immediately put 4 points in Vitality, Strength, and Agility so as to be less vulnerable (he ends up doing this anyway)
Anyway, the rest the story working so well really makes this stand out.
Grammar: Near pe - DinzuRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5TL:DR; If you like apocalypse and/or monster evolution stories, try this. If you like both, you win.
You're here, so you probably already know that this story is about a horse. Not just any horse, but a horse who will do anything for his friends. He will fight neigh-on impossible odds to protect what he holds dear whilst also not risking his life for anything that he isn't personally invested in. He isn't a hero nor is he a villain, he is a horse.
I pretty much started reading this story only because of the monster evolution part, and this is definitely one of the better ones in the genre. However, he is a human in monster body, so don't expect him to start eating babies or generally acting like an actual monster any time soon. If you're looking for a story about an amoral monster killing everything in its way to get stronger, this isn't the one chief.
The world is in a constant state of change and nothing is for certain, monsters have appeared and are constantly evolving with humans fighting desperately for survival in the new world. This is a system-integration apocalypse story through and through set in some city presumably in the US.
While not acting all that monstrous, I really like the MC and enjoyed my time with the story. It's been a really fun read. Unfortunately the MC and his friends aren't enough to overshadow the one issue that I have: I don't like apocalypse stories. - FlossinduneRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5A failed actor turned blessed beast of hell in a competent LitRPG twist. What does one do when you've been turned into a horse and the LitRPG apocalypse is at your door? Try to have a fun little trot, that's what.
Story: A lot of horseplay going on from chapter one. The first few chapters are there to set things up, explain the system and show how the main character got to where he is, but it's done in such an entertaining way that the explanation of the system doesn't feel forced.
Style: Full disclosure, my first thought was "Wow, that's a lot of commas in that one sentence." Then, I kept reading, and it shifted to, "Wow, a stream of consciousness first person viewpoint that does it well."
The story is written from the mostly unabridged thoughts of the main character, which was an absolute pleasure to read. Normally, I don't care much for an overuse of line breaks in the stories I read but as someone with a five second attention span I can see how it works here, and I did enjoy it.
Grammar: Most of my grammar issues could be chalked up to the story being in the MC's stream of consciousness so some things are a bit off, but in the context of the story it's fine enough. A few minor errors but nothing terrible.
Character: And what a character he is, man.
Jackal is a colorful herd of personality traits that don't hesitate to let themselves be known immediately in the story. However, his actions after being ponified (my word processor didn't correct this, and now I know it's because of MLP, so, that's neat) are well thought out and explained. He's a well rounded quadraped, just what you'd want from your Horse LitRPG.
Overall, a read most recommended. I look forward to seeing what comes next. - JusttryingtofindawayRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5This story is very inner thought heavy. This decision breaks up the paragraph structure to be very small. Each one is small and concise, however this can sometimes feel slightly jarring considering the first person narrative.
Style: As I said before this is written in the first person, and its short and choppy style can be hilarious at times. I appreciate the humor, however at times the detail is lacking and I wished for more. Which isn't a bad thing necessarily.
Story: This is where I start to get confused. Somehow the MC becomes a horse through...monsterization? It isn't made clear in the story exactly why this is happening, if there even was a reason. With very little exposition in the early chapters.
Grammar: No errors that I've seen so far. Pretty solid
Character: Jackal is fun, pretty interesting but we don't see that much of him before his transformation into a horse. Through chapter 10 there's still not much exposition about who he was before his transformation. He is shockingly cruel just out of nowhere! And with most of the rest of the planet seemingly monsterized or...horserized besides a select few for unknown reasons what characters we have seen besides him are working on developing a bit more.
All in all its a fun read!
