Description

A fading House in need of a Knight.

A mysterious Warrior searching for purpose.

A thriving Star Nation poised on the brink of war.

Arthur Magellan has travelled the length and breadth of the Humanosphere at the behest of a mysterious compulsion he can neither name nor give definition to.

His journey has brought him hundreds of light years across the myriad and multitudinous star nations of humanity to the Homeworld of the Graecian Ascendancy, in the Hyperion Cluster of the mid-Rim.

There Arthur hopes to find answers to the insistent pull that draws him inexorably onwards, and compels his compliance with irresistible force.

In a realm where Humanity stretches out across uncounted stars, a wandering Knight-Errant must find out the truth behind what drives his need for travel, the mysteries behind his origins, and what fate awaits him in the endless dark.

For in the genetically engineered future of mankind where Psionic powers dictate the natural order, and the the greatest warriors of humanity do battle in mighty bipedal war machines; only the strong may write their own destiny.

Overall: From what I’ve read thus far of Herairoi, I can tell this is a story that will stick with me long after I’m done reading. I keep thinking about it even hours after I’ve read, and I love that it got my gears spinning. I’m eagerly awaiting the rest.
There’s something tangible about this fiction that truly stands out. It has a uniquely visceral presence to it, and I’ve never read anything quite like it. The imagery, the moments of poetry that tinge the author’s voice, the rounded character development, the quality worldbuilding, and the lyrical narrative combine in a way that snares you, whisks you away, and holds you suspended as the story develops.
I’m wildly impressed, enough so that this is the first review I’ve felt compelled to leave on RR.
Style: McCabe has a unique way of building exposition through inner monologue in a manner that doesn’t get dull, and which doesn’t feel excessively brooding. While I usually prefer a focus on action, with development and exposition delivered subtly and slowly through movement and dialogue, McCabe’s unique style has really grown on me. His techniques manage to create empathy for the characters and simultaneously deliver crucial worldbuilding details. It’s an impressive and by no means simple feat.
Further, there are moments of true poetry in his writing that convey powerful imagery and bring the world to life in vivid snapshots. I particularly enjoy those snippets where he ties in a powerful image with a poignant metaphor to capture a particular mood or emotion within the story.
Grammar: Impeccable. In the 9 chapters I’ve read thus far, I only found one typo. Well done.
Story: I haven’t come across a space-fantasy story this compelling in a long time. The expansive world is well-built and clearly defined, while also growing in scope and scale with each new chapter. The pacing is solid, with little to no moments that drag on too long. McCabe has built stakes, intrigue, and conflict in a coherent and well-crafted narrati

Read up across the first few chapters, so far is interesting. I'll be looking forward to what comes next in Arthur's story. While I've always enjoyed Sci-fi stories, I do love a good beginning.
I was able to picture the scene of the Enterprising Fortune exiting warped space in my head with ease, putting me as the reader right at the start of a new adventure in space. Of course the art of war in space is always colossal ships and impressive battles. Nonetheless the details of the planets described around the Graecia system are interesting as well, being that they're named after Greek Gods and Goddesses akin to their environments.
I'll be checking up more as the story progresses!

I should start by saying that the story as a whole is excellently written. Indeed it may be the best piece of literature I have come across on Royal Road so far. My only query would be whether all the characters need to use complex languge so regularly, this is a minor point though. It reads very well and is completely understandable.
The actual story and plotting has huge potential - in a galaxy spanning civilisation there is no limit to what Arthur can do. Moreover, the questions raised are done in such a way as to encourage the reader to continue. Is he working for the Imperator? What are the Kights of the Round Table? What is an Inquisitor doing with him? and why is his Callandium limit to low? and what does Callandium actually do? (I realise its some sort of enhancement but we have not been given a clear explanation yet) I can only hope these questions in time will be answered. I am also somewhat gratified that a love interest has not been turned into the all consuming storyline - and hope it does not for a while. Further explanation regarding the prevalence of concubines/ wives to attention genetic potential would be helpful and help the reader understand how necessary it is to ensure dynasties flourish.
Stylisitcally, I have no criticisms, it screams grand space opera with nobility and chivalry, war and intrigue. My only hope is that the political intrigue features just as much as physical battle - authors tend to diparage it and yet it can be some of the most fascinating chapters in any book I have read. Further, these novels that take place on a grand scale can get bogged down in their own world building- some is needed, indeed a lot can be required. However, explaining every detail instead of using common sci-fi terms can be annoying. This has NOT happened but as this story evolves and becomes star spanning - care may be warranted.
I do not have much to say regarding grammar. Its clearly been proofed and there are no obvious errors or regular issues. It is

The story so far is very well written. The first few chapters give you a glimpse at what is just the tip of the proverbial iceberg of world building to come. The stage is set for an even deeper dive into what promises to be a rich and expensive universe. It is looking like a main character focused drama involving interstellar politics, mecha, and science fiction fun.
After reading more of the story as new chapters come out, the trend of slow but steady world building and background lore creating continues, making the setting feel alive and three-dimensional. The characters that are introduced are interesting, though so far aren't too developed. To be fair, we are only 18 chapters in, and are less than a week into the story according to the time that has passed since we were introduced to the main character. This brings us to the pacing of the story. As mentioned before, very little time has passed in the story as of chapter 18, with so many words being dedicated to exploring the intricacies of the setting and building the stage for the story to continue unfolding. If the pacing continues with this level of detail, we may need to settle down for a slow burn which hopefully leads to an exciting payoff.

Okay, ive only read two of the chapters so far and chapter 1 kicks off with arthur magellan, this magic psyker man with a secret past, and the crew. It's got massive sci-fi universe vibes and sets the stage for some cosmic drama. then in chapter 2, I'm really in love with the colossal scale of the throneworld, the satellite fortresses of deimos and phobos and all the other planets in the star system give a small scale vibe of the warhammer fiction and im completely hooked with anyathing that has advanced technology mixed together with ancient mythological imagery, and all this comes together with the main character's mysterious past which I'm exitied to get into.

So... I happened to come across this 26 seconds after the first chapter was posted. The blurb alone made me rush to read it. I didn't find a single spelling error, in either the blurb or the chapter. To be honest I wasn't looking too hard. The first few paragraphs drew me right into the story.
Just from the single available chapter, I learned very quickly that this story is the kind I've been looking for on this site for years. Can't wait for more!
I'll update this review in the future, once I've really gotten to sink my teeth into it.

Disclaimer: As a long-standing friend/subordinate/patsy/punching bag of the author, I had the honor/privilege/responsibility/requirement of reading/editing/critiquing this story before it was posted here. With a few caveats, I shall still try to remain as impartial and harsh as I ever was, and point out what to expect in reading this piece. He knows me as Dunkirk, and yes, he can be a bit of a prick sometimes, but at least he admits it. So let's move on.
    What is this story's style?
I'm not always the greatest at putting my impressions into text. Sometimes I tend to circle around the point or get a bit vague with my terminology. That said, the author wears his inspirations for this piece on his sleeve. You can expect certain references/connections to the Arthurian tales, mixed with Greek history/mythology (particularly when it comes to naming conventions), with a heavy touch of fairly hard science fiction when it comes to explaining how the 'world' of this story functions and operates. I wouldn't particularly call it jarring, but if you do read a lot, you will absolutely notice the inspirations taken in the writing here. I'm aware that this can bother certain types of readers, but I'll say this at the outset. Just... give it a try. If you don't like it, you're under no obligation to continue, but the only thing you have to lose is a little bit of time.
    What is this story?
Well, that's a rather difficult question to get into without delving into that most unholy of things... Spoilers. But I did touch upon it in the previous section. It's a science fiction story taking inspiration from Arthurian legend, Greek history/mythology, and maybe a touch or two of Warhammer 40K and other science fiction stories. It's not always openly admitted inspiration, but you will likely have seen some of the things here before. But it's a well developed spin on what has been seen before, and has enough freshness in its approach to keep it from over-treading on well-worn ground. It's well

"I didn't know what I was doing here.  To be fair it was a simple request. It sounded innocent enough.  Perhaps I should have thought about the long-term consequences of me doing what I did. It is truly amazing how one small act, seemingly inconsequential, can come back down the line. It is not simply contained in a box.  The box doesn't have a lid.  Anyone and everyone can and will take a peek inside.  What's worse, the box isn't even mine.  It is a box that affects someone else, or a lot of someone elses. Is that even a word?  No matter. The real problem with this... is how much I liked it. I had a problem putting it down.  How can one man lift us, only to set us up for a fall?  How can he place one on a cliff, and let us dangle our feet over the edge, terrified of the fall, but enjoy it?  Gods, I think he's rubbed off on me too much."
Above: If you know, you know.
I am thoroughly enjoying the read. The story score will likely be updated as the plot starts coming together. Find your pilot seat and buckle up.  It will be a glorious ride.  It's also not an isekai.

The characters, the worldbuilding and the main plot/mystery is very good. Space Nations inspired by Earth's historical civilizations is a fun twist.
However the pacing is abysmally, glacially slow. I've read 100k+ words so far, and nothing of note has happened other than character introductions and worldbuilding. No joke, I've read the length of a published novel with nothing to show for it. This might have been fine for a slice of life novel, but it significantly degraded my enjoyment when I was expecting a gritty space opera.
Author needs to balance the exposition with the plot. So far, novel is basically made up of pure exposition.
I'm dropping this novel until there are at least 50 more chapters to read, because that's about the timeline of when plot is actually going to start from what I've seen.
