Alaina wishes to be more than a mere icon for her kingdom, believing a princess should be much more than a fragile lady in a dress. The king wants no more than for her to marry in order to succeed the throne, but she has other things in mind -- such as her thirst for freedom and adventure.

But when one of the neighbouring kingdoms demands that it's time for a change in the land of Asteria, her entire kingdom is shaken. To worsen the situation, the king is somehow caving in to the demands irrationally. Stubbornly refusing to resign herself to the kingdom's seemingly inevitable fate, she is forced to leave her home in search for the root of the problems.

Along with people of diverse backgrounds she comes to trust and a hotheaded boy with pyrokinesis named Kai, Alaina joins an uprising rebellion against the forming empire. But the rebellion is only the beginning of the end, for the end result isn't as perfect as how they have proudly perceived and imagined it to be - some sacrifices are destined to be made.

To be perfectly honest, I read the synopsis and wanted to see what "sacrifice" might be there and since last chapters have a notorious history of containing sacrifices, I checked that out first.
The story "clicked" with me and so I started reading from the beginning.
It's a nice novel about rebellions and it had me hooked from the start! Totally enjoyed the experience!
The writing style was neat and without too much flair. The words were simple, POVs were well shown and the story flowed quite seamlessly.
As for the plot itself, a rebellion against a current system is always engaging and it's especially relatable when youths try to go against it for their beliefs...though of course, some of the youths in the book have special skills of their own.
That said, there are many unanswered questions that I hope are answered in the later instalments. I believe they haven't been answered now intentionally to preserve the mystery.
Yes, there are a few plot holes...but nothing that can't be overlooked.
There aren't too many mistakes but a few words and grammatical errors are present. Do check them...hehe.
The characters have grown on me. They are endearing and have grown in a short while. Kai has opened up a little...mainly to Alaina...up to the point that he was willing to stay behind to protect her. Lloyd has also grown from being a mostly scared know-it-all.
Hoping for further development in inter-personal relationships and their own abilities in the further instalments.
All in all, it was a great read! Well done and keep writing more! Hoping to read the next book!
