Reborn A Paladin: The Dagger Of Shadows
Community Rating
Description
Mirio awakes in a strange place, surrounded by shadows, and an overwhelming hesitation about opening his eyes. A voice speaks to him in the darkness and it awakens a hidden power within him, launching him onto the path of becoming a Paladin, and towards something more.
It is a semi-realistic take on being reborn and how that might feel like. It is meant to be immersive and to help you feel what it really might mean to be reborn with powers you really don't understand. The character is somewhat of a power fantasy but not outrageously so. And it is not a harem manga, but you will see some very cool things with waifu's at some point, but it must be earned!I present to you, this story for you enjoyment. Please help me make it all it can be and more.

- MortenGRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I genuinely love the story! It has tons of interesting threads and themes woven into it that at first seem straight forward but turns out to be much more nuanced and creative. With each new chapter I felt like a new layer or perspective got added to these.
An example is Mirio himself, who is born into the world almost but not quite able to grasp what came before. His connection to his pre-existance or to what flows underneath the visible world (the shadow) is explored in an elegant and rich way that doesn't trivialize Mirio but shows us more about his nature, how he's able to do the things, and also to understand the deeper aspects of the world.
Mirio's beginning is humble in a way. But his ability to break down situations into individual obstacles/tasks and progress in the world one step at a time is a constant. His connection to the "shadow", in my opinion, shows that Mirio is more than just a blindly driven person or a pure force-of-nature, he is also able to reflect on himself and be critical of what drives or affects him.
There are other characters in the story that provide a constrast to Mirio, and they make it so that the themes are more open to discussion/interpretation and never forced on you. Due to the interplay between those contrasting elements it's also hard to predict exactly what will happen ahead of time.
The writing is light and varied. Funny scenes are genuinely funny, action scenes flow and are clearly constructed with an understanding of how fighting works, and scenes describing the world are fascinating because of the unique rules or boundaries that they set up for the characters in the world.
I've actually used the story as a way to discuss and put into words certain things that I hadn't thought explicitely about before, instead of just forgetting about the themes and characters once I stop reading. - WuxtorRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5If I had to nitpick within reasonable limits...I would say that it's the words of sfx that doesn't quite translate it into story especially on current chapter with DASH DASH DASH as sfx or something like that. Rarely, I have to figure out whose thoughts are speaking. While I don't mind the use of * to indicate thoughts, others may be thrown off by this
- ArcanaVitaeRoyal Road★★★★ 3.5A story that has some really good world building for the hows and why things work. The magic system is very intersting and well done. The writing is decent at the begining and becomes better and better with time. It is a story that I came back to after a while and was happy to see that it got updated.
- jjkyxrRoyal Road★★ 2.0Felt like I was losing brain cells reading this. Very novice writing with no depth. Action was decently described, but everything else was sloppily thrown together to move the plot forward for maximum wish fulfillment. First 2 chapters should be cut entirely and be converted into a paragraph or 2. Can't recommend it.
- Shield_Guy9991Royal Road★ 1.0Power levels are unclear, forced events making the good pacing bad, disappointing use of magic and the said divine light.
These are some of the thinks I hate in this story. The first few parts are somewhat foreshadowing the MC as some sort of reincarnator but only get flashes of memories. The power levels are not really explained well, there are no basis of strength as it is only described as vague confusing and really hard to answer why is this person stronger than this person, there are monster hunter, mages, guards and mages talked about but not how powerful each of them confronting each other. The start is weird, but still can be considered good, then to the part where author likes to torment the characters and the readers to make them win but loses too much for a good end, it shouldn't be traumatizing content it should be tormenting content. Too much bs realistic view but too bad of an outcome, not all in reality is bad but oh boy your here for a news reality in isekai worlds have fricked up gods and authors make problems rain. Honestly it was good until author decided to kill off/ make some excuse to remove many important supporting characters as they should be realistic. Reality is pretty twised huh.
