Ravensong's Flight
Community Rating
Description
Rava has spent all his known life in the forest of Dorumdora, home to many monsters, predators and other animals you'd rather steer clear of.For 16 years hes been going through the most grueling training his Father? Caretaker? Teacher? could throw at him, earning him the nickname 'the Old Fucker' in Rava's mind. One night a story of legacy, being marked an ill omen capable of hurting 'The Enlightened' unravels before him, sending him into flight from his pursuer, hell bent on killing him.
The story follows the trials and tribulations of Rava as he sets out into a world he has trained for, but never experienced.
Note, this will be gritty high fantasy and I'll learn writing as I go along, this is my first serious attempt so there will be some mistakes and other shenanigans.

- BananaDragonRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This story is one that is incredibly intriguing and captivating; readers can see Perlance's growth as he masters the ability to show the incredible worlrdbuilding and story without directly telling the reader. Additionally, the author is incredibly perceptive to the readers, which is just an added plus that makes the story more enjoyable. I highly recommend people on the fence about reading Ravensong's Flight to give it a chance.
Style: In terms of style and grammar, I want to quickly preface that English is not the author's first language, but that they have been making adjustments and edits. My reviews for these two sections are therefore subject to change as the story continues. Earlier in the story, there were some info-dumps that did impact the buildup and subsequent reveals; this did make one scene fall flat, however the author has absolutely improved by leaps and bounds since then. I will reread the earlier chapters in the future to check in on these issues. Some smaller comments were that, while the writing is predominately very clear and easy to read, there are times where it gets confusing with pronouns or descriptions. Sometimes the dialogue is confusing because multiple people talk in one paragraph. Don't let any of these discourage you from reading the story, though. This story is still one that deserves more love and full support from readers, as it has some absolutely incredible moments in prose.
Update: As the story continued, style massively improved. I'll be bumping up my rating!
Story: SO SO SO incredible!! It's absolutely intriguing the way that it was executed, and it leaves you desiring more every single time! The story really sells this work. I won't say too much in fear of spoiling, but Perlance does an incredible job maintaining mystery, growing tension, and creating incredible, well thought out fight scenes.
Grammar: Overall very well done and impressive. There are a couple of run on or incomplete sentences and issues in quotations througho - FJBRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Rava is a boy who’s been dealt a bad hand of cards. He’s constantly “trained” by his mentor in possibly the most brutal and unforgiving manner possible, and just when things finally start going his way, he learns that his life is about to get even MORE dangerous. In a world of monsters, magic, and enigmatic beings known as Enlightened (who seem to be anything but), you’d think one boy would have enough problems as it is. Throw a bit of prophecy into the mix and... well, I’m not going to spoil it, but let’s just say that doesn’t usually lead to rainbows and puppies.
Story— The author claims this is his first work (or at least first serious attempt), but you’d hardly know it. This story snaps and pops, and there’s barely a chapter that goes by that doesn’t end with some revelation or turn of events that leaves you chomping for the next one. I think I actually whistled out loud at one point, some of the twists were just that good. For a story that is just setting out, it sets a high standard for itself right out of the gate.
Character— I felt like I got a really clear feel for Rava right from the first chapter, and that wasn’t just because he was running for his life with an arrow in his leg. The author goes out of his way to show exactly how the MC’s life has shaped his personality, honed him to be like a weapon and to always try to think three steps ahead of his enemy. Later this gets driven home even more during an exchange between him and his mentor, both helping reveal Rava’s knowledge base and also how he tends to approach problems. I found him to be a complex but believable character, given the circumstances of his upbringing.
That said, it would have been nice to see a little more humanity worked in. For instance, when Rava’s origins are revealed along with the threats against him he barely even blinks at finding out the truth. Later, upon seeing another human die at his own hand for (presumably) the first time, he doesn’t even remark upon it. Hopefully later c - M.G DriverRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0A brilliant fantasy adventure filled with great lore, hints of mystery and a believable cast of characters.
The story is extremely fast-paced, well written and concise. No dwelling or languishing around - it's straight pedal to the metal action and movement.
Style:
Great writing style, consistent, clear, fun to read and colourful.
With the style, the action scenes really come to life, making it very apparent how much effort the author had put into describing and playing out the battle.
The battles move as fast as the reader reads, which is a good pace. No drawn out fights - short and direct fights.
The chapters are also not too long, allowing the reader to have a natural rhythm to the flow of the story.
Story:
Already the universe hidden behind the dialogue and events are intriguing. It hints at a much larger and interconnected world that gets the reader truly excited to learn more about. It made me feel like a kid again, trying to imagine for myself what the Dwarven architecture would visualize like in my head based on the Author words.
Grammar:
There were no major flaws or mistakes that detracted from the reading experience, it was a smooth read all the way through like a bullet train. The author has done an amazing work here.
Character:
The interaction between the MC and his mentor is great to see. Due to the fast paced nature of the story and the short chapters, there's not a lot of time for the characters to dwell on emotional moments, leading to a bit of a letdown in that aspect.
However, as of the latest chapter I can already feel the story winding up to reach a high tension point - this is great overall.
Even the side characters have life in them, and are not completely one-dimensional.
I do feel that the exposition dump about the backstory of the MC didn't really lead to the emotional development I would have expected, but that's just me.
Overall, great story, AMAZING action scenes and fighting, and a whole deep world/universe to explore! - jake123Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0When it comes to grammar I'm by no means an expert. That being said I can't recall any times that an error interrupted the flow of the story for me.
I do really enjoy the Style of writing. The pacing has been very good so far with a lot happening but with enough time taken to understand the why. I don't remember there being any long monologues about how things work and if there are they were done in a way that captivated and drew me in instead of boring me to death. The fight scenes have a good flow to them with good commentary if a tad analytical which isn't a bad thing IMO.
The story isn't something ground breaking and new but it is presented with the authors unique ideas and twists. It's seems to be well thought out and if it continues to be this good or better then this will definitely be a story to remember.
The characters are very well done. The Grandpa is my favorite so far even if we haven't seen all the much of him after the first few chapters. He's scarily talented, skilled and educated and reminds me of the Witcher in some ways. His character is presented well from rava's perspective where we get to see through the cracks in his Stoney personality. Rava is a good main character with incredible skills and talent but I would personally like to see more emotion and at least mental reaction from him when he encounters all these new things for the first time in person. For instance when the bartender I think It was smilled at him and he remarked on how it was the first time a girls ever smilled at him. I would've let to see even the smallest of stutters from him to show that even with all his crazy training that he's still a human teenager and prone to mistakes. Orwell so far has been nice in the sense that he shows the difference between Rava and a regular person.
Overall I love the direction of story and the writing style. I enjoy reading about the characters and their pasts. I'm very excited to explore more of the magic system of this world. Great job can't - Apollo149Royal Road★★★★★ 4.5The story is going well, I am on chapter 5.
Basic Overview.
We have a young main character in the woods training, but an old mentor. He is trying to hide and avoid him in the woods. We also see the main character learning about magic and the natural world around him. I just learning (spoiler-that he is being hunted by “Blank” because he might destroy “Blank”)
Side note: I really enjoy the talk about herbs and such for healing. Like there was a line about needing to have the herbs boil and supported with good details.
It is quite interesting specially introducing the races language, I am liking the monsters and the talk about magic. The main character has some good abilities, and I believable he has 16 years of training. Correct me if I am wrong. Age doesn’t matter, I enjoyed the training.
Style: So far it is a solid Heroes Journey style story. I like the idea around magic and how it is used. I like the author dialogue between the two main characters. I can picture the area that he is training in. I like the fake trails using game paths. There is also a good amount of action mixed into the story.
I just started to hit into the large world building and back story.
I like the chapter size.
Grammar: I would say that some of the sentences need to be broken down, and not so run on. Just reading it with all the semicolons aren’t needed. However, I didn’t have any problems with reading this story. Might just be my own personal preference.
Characters are good. No problems with them. They seem a little basic to start with, but that isn’t a bad thing, because you are setting up the story and changes/developments happen over time.
Overall, currently a good action fantasy. - ARC-MOONRoyal Road★★★★ 3.5Alright, boys and girls, it's time for a review. Now, I've only read up to chapter 10, which is not even being half caught up, but I do have a few things to say.
Story: Alright, I'm gonna say this, the story is already going, stuff is happening, the main characters are being hunted, and it's kinda intense. But this might not be a big problem, but it's a bunch of the terminology within the story being thrown out there and expecting the audience to be able to understand what the characters are saying half the time. Now, I'm not saying that Lowan should go to Rava and be like "Okay, boy, I'm gonna tell you about the world you live in and stuff you already know, okay?"
In fact, something like that can work, just look at a work like Dorohedoro (a manga). It's able to introduce us to a world filled with weird ass characters without stopping to explain itself and it still makes me feel invested. So maybe it's just me, but I don't know, sorta got lost when a bunch of terms, places, and people were being talked about without having any knowledge of them.
Character: I'm giving the benefit of a doubt. I have not seen enough of them to know much about them. Coupled with the length of each chapter, I haven't spent enough time learning everything there is to their character's
Lowan comes off as the stoic mentor figure who doesn't show any emotion around Rava, but at one instance (so far), he does show some love towards Rava during chapter 7.
As for Rava, I'll be honest, I don't have much of a beat on his character at this point. I never really got a strong impression of his character on than being trained by Lowan to speak other languages and how to survive on his own. This was most likely from me reading just the early chapter, so maybe we get some character development down the line.
So I'm holding back any real judgement of the characters.
Grammer: I haven't noticed any major issues in the story so far. Other than a few missing words in sentences, it's pretty good.
Style: Aigh
