Description

Zack and his dog use an ancient training system to save their town.

Life is quiet in Questers Valley, even for Zack Farron, who spends his free time exploring the local mines with his canine friend, Daudilus.

But everything changes when they uncover an ancient training system deep inside the mountain. This system grants quests and skills to its users, urging them to improve themselves and their surroundings. Daudilus also starts exhibiting strange new powers, hinting that he might have a system of his own.

Meanwhile, an elven corporation sets its sights on the valley, aiming to build a mana reactor and destroy their town’s way of life. Armed with their new powers and skills, Zack and Daudilus are the only ones who can stop them.

First, this is just the start of the book, so take everything I say with a pinch of salt.
I don't know how, but this book feels dated. Like how a LitRpg was written when the genre first started. Perhaps it is the feeling of basic wish fulfillment. That we all have dreamed of suddenly getting a system that will give us experience and raise our levels just by washing dishes, going to the gym and reading. I think I might have enjoyed it if it was the first genre book of its kind I read, but it isn't.
The writing is good, David Musk knows his stuff and I have enjoyed his previous series. He's also adding tidbits of lore and worldbuilding, introducing side characters, creating a low urban/rural fantasy setting that seems interesting.
What I'm missing is a hook. I am not particularly interested in the main characters as yet, they haven't given me a reason to be. There's no real plot as yet. Also, there's not yet any of that coziness that exists in Stardew Valley which this setting seems inspired by.
If it was a book, I would most likely have skimmed a bit forward to see when it would start to get interesting, but that doesn't work in a Webserial. As of now, I have placed it on hold to get back to when more chapters have been created. What exists now isn't interesting enough for me to keep on reading. I hope that will have changed when I take a new look in a month or two.
I know the author can write some seriously good progression fantasy, so I do have hopes. Perhaps its only me who have a hard time with slow beginnings.
