- Dragonsune Of LegendRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0The author of this fiction has passed. However, what's written here is still worth the read. It's never to be finished, but it lives on in my memories.
I still come back every so often and reread it. It's fun to fantasize how it may have gone on and ended.
RIP Matador, long live Matador. - TallicaRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Talk about ending on a cliffhanger.. this was a really interesting take on live action card battles and good old colonialism and dehumanization. And just because it ended abruptly due to IRL tragedy does NOT mean it's not very much worth a read as is. In fact, for any authors looking at CCG game plots or system apocalypse, this book is an extremely good example to follow. The trials of the MC and motivations of the antagonists(those revealed to at what would have been a very early point in the story), while still having much more to reveal, were extremely well done.
- moredreadRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Walt is a former world class player at card games. So when the apocalypse comes its in the form of a card turn based battle.
I had some reservations about this story mainly because of the turn based fights. The author writes at a level that puts those concerns to rest. Its engaging and addictive. Love the different card minions have their own personality. The card battles are written extremely realistic. Its like Yu Gi Oh meets HellRaiser. - ilikemermaidsRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Dude this story is so fun! This isn't normally my type of read but The author is obviously well seasoned in the craft and his genre mash up of post apocalyptic and magic card wielding is a blast. I feel committed to the journey and I'm excited to see what's in store for Will Harmon.
- PhantomFredRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This story is basically hearthstone with real world consequences. The main character was a prodigy card player which explains why he's able to understand the mechanics so fast. The main character makes smart decisions and is likeable.
The beginning is hard to get through but once the dueling starts this story really starts to shine. I just hope that the main character isn't able to steam role everything and turns into a Mary sue. He just recently met an old man who also won his duel and immediately trust him. I hope for the story that it forces them to duel.
Overall this story definitely has promise and worth reading! - RaunRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This story had such promise. I only wish I had left a five star review much earlier so that the author could have seen it :(
Interesting and captivating litrpg mechanics using playable cards. Intriguing world building. Promising protagonist with a relevant background that justifies his progress. Makes you wonder what the author had in his mind for the story. - storybookknightRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5There aren't a lot of surprises in Psycho Duel Revelations so far, and that's not necessarily a bad thing. The blurb describing the premise made me expect a novel about a slightly edgy main character struggling to survive in a card-game based apocalypse, and that's pretty much exactly what I got when I read it.
One thing that does make things more interesting is the fact that terrain comes into play - for instance, the main character is able to hide key parts of a big card combo inside the apartment complex that serves as the playing field for the first Duel, and uses that surprise to actually pull off a win.
On the other hand the card that enables that win is introduced mechanically in a quick aside in Chapter 4 and pays off in Chapter 10, which had me flipping back through chapters to reread the actual mechanics, so I feel like there could have been some narrative repetition or something to remind the reader what that combo was supposed to do, but that's a fairly minor quibble all things considered and the story is just starting out.
If the novel continues using narrative devices like use of terrain, trickery, and other 'cheats' the player can use to think outside of the box to score wins, I think it'll help keep the story more engaging than the typical card battler narrative, which is great. Comparatively, the post-apocalyptic elements are fairly basic so far, but rather than 'aliens' or 'zombies', 'homicidal anime card duelists' is at least an original way to kick off an apocalypse, so I'm curious to see how things progress! Similarly, I'm looking forward to seeing the novel introduce more characters for the main character to interact with, but the bits we've seen with the main character's first potential teammate have been decent.
In other words - it's too early to tell exactly how things are going to shape up, but I think this story is off to a strong start and am seeing a lot of hints that make me hopeful to see where it goes! - Someone_elseRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5I've really enjoyed the sudden surge in card related magic systems in stories, but this one is far more direct in its card focus than many I've read. This isn't so much about just the deck building as magic system as it fully ports over the entire ccg play structure into reality. It has heavy Hearthstone and Yugioh influences, and gets way into the weeds of the duels and card play strategy and methodology. It's Well written so Probably a grail read for ccg fans out there, but may be a bit of a struggle to get through without being a fan of card game ecosystems. Author does a fine job of explaining things though, so I don't think it's a prerequisite for reading or anything.
overall 4.5/5 very well done. Looking forward to reading more - AezoraRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5Overall, really well done. However, while this is really only the start of the story (and since apparently the author died, RIP), it's apparent that the story would not be interesting much longer.
Basically, the card game that is being played is Hearthstone. Not the same cards, but the mechanics are the same with minor exceptions. The author also set it up so that losing (at least for the MC) means death. This is a problem. Hearthstone is a game designed to have as even win/loss ratios as possible, with the worldwide #1 player winning less then 60% of his games. Now to be fair, this is because the #1 player usually plays higher ranked players as well, but the game is designed so that the #1 player would not win 100% of the time, even against noobs. Basically, it's significantly luck based. Luck based games don't work well for death games where you have to win over and over and over again, so this necessarily means the author has to save the MC with plot armour, namely luck and broken cards (which he also will give the enemy to create tension, but not enough to win).
Obviously I realize this particular story won't be continued, but if anyone else decides to do something similar either make it so people can lose and be fine, or pick a different card game. Pretty much any super popular card game should be fine, since they allow top players to win basically always (like magic for example, although I guess that's more deck based than player... But still.) - KrischanRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0Alien psycho cardwielders come into town and the locals turn into NPC's. There is nasty stuff going on in the psychos' homeland but for now they are just the baddies. And here is the local (somewhat failed in life) genius who is likely to save the world and may well save the psychos while he is at it.
Writing is good, story ok, to me fight scenes are okish - initially it was a 4.5/5. I'm not sure that all the baddies should be as bad as each other but it's early days and he might find the love of his life turning some softish invader or sth.
But after today's installment there is a huge problem for me: the number and time given to fights and the progression. If he needs these extensively described and (to me) somewhat boring as (non card gamer) pretty random fights to progress we'll never get him anywhere unless there is then a tournament where it's all official and the world is given a higher if not more desireable status. I feel as ambiguous about the story as the last sentence is convuluted.
Early days and I will browse at a later stage and overall I'm sure could be wow.
