- Cowabunga_BluewriterRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5First of all, I love the cover. With a bit of color and a ruler, it can be spanking! Maybe even a wind dragon coiling between the words to signify Hawk! Anyway, it’s a good cover. There are some things done well and some things that need work as in everything.
Characters:
The characters are well done. Their personalities are distinct and colorful. It’s a colorful cast of characters, lol. From Nile, observant and smart, to Pudge the bully, to the main character Hawk. They all meet the GMC (Goals, Motivations, Conflict).
Different goals for each character. Different motivations drive each character, tho, well, we’ll get to that in a sec, and the conflicts that they bring emerge from these, so good job there.
Style:
Pacing needs some work. I need to feel that the build-up from fast to slow to slow to fast is felt; for these, the transition scenes need a little work. The tone is fairly consistent, though. What I mean by that is that I don’t feel vibes of the story being anything but what it illustrates. Now the hook sentence: The boy stood proudly atop the tan soil, as the sun began to set into the horizon, and the eyes of the dusk began to slowly pry open. While the opening is ok, this needs more umph as this book has a lot of fighting, why not open it up with Hawk standing over a foe or looking down on the nine continents from the heavens as a god or something eye-catching and maybe a bit of foreshadowing too?
Now, what really gets to me is the blocks of text. Oof, they are hard and tedious to get through! It will def turn readers away or off. Each speaker gets their own paragraph, though if you want it like the movies, find some way it's not a block of text, alright?
Story:
When we left off, it was getting interesting, but halfway through the first arc, it got kinda tedious, one fight after the other. Out of respect for the story and author, I didn’t skip any but I get the sense that many people would, and that’s troubling. You bring a new element to each battle, an - SentryStoneRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5I am friends with the author, and the amount of passion that this man has for this book is unreal. I highly recommend sticking around for the long haul because we might have another LOTM in the making here with its expansive universe.
