- 167fiveRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This story seems to be one of those episodic diary types, something that I don't always enjoy, unless executed well.
This story was rather decent at it.
The two humanoid cat women the story revolves around, Cali and Maeve, are very relatable. The diary gives us glimpses into their deep thoughts and desires, introducing readers to their characters even though we barely know how they look like.
I like the whole slice-of-life vibes, though I did find it rather slow. But I have a feeling that as I continue reading the story, the worldbuilding and plot will thicken heavily.
In conclusion, this is a fine piece to read whenever you want to turn off your brain and relax. I just hope that we get a little bit more action in the latter chapters. - PyroticTeratomaRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I will preface my review with this: the story is VASTLY improved by having context from one of the author’s previous entries, that being the Level 100 Cooking In The Dungeon story. You don’t need to read it to enjoy this one, and indeed the vast majority of the characters in this story are not the ones in that story, but there are (at least so far) a ton of little callbacks and tidbits and details that won’t be nearly as relevant if you haven’t read the other story first. On that subject, Level 100 Cooking and this one follow a decently similar format, so if you enjoy that one (seriously, it is a really good story and worth your time), you should like this one.
Now. Assuming you haven’t read this story’s predecessor, I will say this: this story simultaneously moves quickly and slowly. The chapters are pretty short. There is often slice-of-life-esque filler chapters, though nothing is ever written just to take up space. You won’t be immediately given answers to most questions, and despite being a magic fantasy world, it is extremely realistic in that it shows people with feelings, secrets, and relationships between each other that impact how events play out, and it does not treat the party as a hive mind where everyone knows what everyone else knows until it would be more beneficial to the plot to start a conflict. This story, above all else, is an adventure. It’s an adventure shared between friends and family. It’s an adventure amongst a pack of ill-prepared morons that woke up and decided their lives needed some excitement. It’s an adventure between people that are about each other and worry for each other, some more (or less) than others, all knowing full well that they’re just here to see where the road to the rest of their lives leads. And that’s what this story is: an adventure you get to ride along for, not quite where the horizon stops, seeing where the road takes the lot of you, for good or ill. - chris#1SupermanClarkkentfanRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5This is my review of "A private diary." after reading 6000 words, or ten chapters.
Firstly, I would like to say that this was probably one of the most challenging books I have ever read. After reading a handful of books at this point, I've mentally cataloged a long list of elements that make a good to great novel. And, of course, I've had to add to or revise my list as I've burned through different stories. And this one is no different.
The story is formatted as an epistolary novel. For those who are unaware, like I was, of what kind of book that is, let me explain. It's the type of book whose story is told through a series/compilation entries of media like letters or journal entries rather than any kind of narrator (e.g., limited perspective, all-knowing, etc.). And speaking frankly, this way of doing things can be its greatest strength and weakness. It can make it difficult for readers like me to enjoy, but it also gives the book its own unique identity. So I suppose that its effectiveness largely depends on who's reading it.
However, getting into the story, I have a few things to say. Our tale mostly revolves around two young humanoid cat women, Cali and Meave, as they continuously write down letters to their loved ones that are documented in the book. I personally liked it a lot. It had the exact kind of cozy vibe I was looking to read. As I was going through it, I could feel the small-town energy that I believe the writer was going for. I was absolutely there for it. Furthermore, the author just makes them write in such a colorful and overly dramatic way that it made me laugh.
Still, I believe there are a few things that I personally think the writer can improve on. I said I liked the small-town vibe, but the story is a little slow in the beginning. Additionally, I found that the journal entries could have used some more sensory details. For example, have the girls describe how hot or cold the day was or the taste of the food they ate. Lastly, I would have app
