Description

Book 1 is stubbed past chapter 5. Book 1 is available on myPatreonuntil theKU releaseon June 3rd

Kole always wanted to be a wizard, a dream that grew into an obsession when his parents disappeared on an adventure. The son of two powerful magical traditions, Kole was hailed as a prodigy at an early age. But, a head start is of little use if you're tied to the starting gate. When his mother's magic manifested after he'd already embarked on the path to wizardry, he found he had only a singular powerful magical ability—to turn invisible.

But the heritage that granted that power holds him back from the higher heights of his dreams. He's spent the last five years struggling to overcome his blocked wizardry, but when his parents are declared legally dead he is forced to make a choice. Stay at home and be forced to train as a Mirage Knight like his mother, or set out on his own to seek answers to his problem at the center of all magical learning, the Academy of Illunia.

This story takes place in the same world as my book Dear Spellbook, 100 years after the events of the first trilogy. You do NOT have to read that series to follow and enjoy this story. But if you have read Dear Spellbook, you will see a lot of familiar names, places, magical abilities, and magical artifacts.

Reading this story will not spoil any elements of Dear Spellbook or its sequels.

What to expect:

-Single POV with no interludes or switches

-Heavy magic system exploration

-Some slice-of-life elements

-Slower pace progression fantasy

-Heavy D&D inspiration

-Deep world building

Whatnotto expect:

-Harem

-Overpowered MC

-LitRPG

-Graphic violence (just regular old violence)

    Great story so far.
World building is solid. Enough information to know what is happening but plenty of secrets to digest and look forward to uncovering.
Main character is solid and relationships are developing slowly, which is much more realistic. The unease and uncertainty I think adds to the story.
Looking forward to learning more about the magic system. The little teasers about the various "types" of magic user at the start of the chapters is cool.
Main character seems balanced or even a bit underpowered at the moment. So looking forward to growth.
Only minor criticism is that the story is a bit slow paced at the moment. Alot is happening but I find the reason behind the drive a bit lacking. Would like to have a crisis or something to urge the MC on and suck in the reader. We know about the parents, but that is not really brought up or pushed internally and doesn't seem to have a clock on it. Also sometimes the motivation is not that clear. I didn't quite feel the drive and emotion to cause the MC to take a huge risk to leave and came across a bit cold. Locking yourself into a barrel of dung and jettisoned into the ocean where the barrel could leak and sink or smash or never get picked up is crazy. Especially since the premeditated plan was ruined. But perhaps the MC is just reckless or just really driven by learning magic, despite denying that reason and wanting to go adventurer. It's all there, maybe needs to be tied up or some reminders or thoughts before/during actions. I am still enjoying the story greatly.
Following and looking forward to buying the audiobook release when it happens! Will be checking out the authors other works.

A thoroughly balanced magic system that feels both familiar yet unique. A relatable poor main character, whose limitations feel reasonable rather than forced. A backstory that is trope appropriate with a new spin. A cast of characters that feel compelling rather than just there to fill a role for the main character. I binged the whole series so far and cannot wait for more.

This story is a fantastic blend of character-driven development, exciting magic systems, and fast-paced action that keeps you hooked from chapter to chapter. What immediately stands out is the main character (MC), who isn’t overpowered from the start. Instead, the author takes the time to show his gradual growth, both in terms of magical abilities and personal development, making his journey feel earned and relatable. I enjoyed watching him confront challenges, struggle with setbacks, and come up with creative solutions rather than simply overpowering his enemies. This adds a lot of depth to the story and makes the pacing feel dynamic.
One of the strongest aspects of the book is how the author balances character development with action. The backstories of supporting characters, particularly the MC’s parents, are well-crafted and make the world feel alive. These additional layers of history give the story a deeper emotional core. It's refreshing to see side characters who are not just background props but individuals with their own struggles and motivations. The relationships between the characters, especially the friendships within the MC's group, are well-developed, adding warmth and humor to an otherwise high-stakes plot.
The world-building is another standout feature, though it has its ups and downs. The author has created a vivid magical world that is rich with lore, power structures, and fascinating systems of magic. The magical system itself is one of the more unique ones I’ve seen in a long time, with concepts like "bridges" and "fonts." However, this is where the story falters slightly. While intriguing, the magic system is not always explained in a way that’s easy to follow. There are moments where I felt a little lost, especially when the narrative dives into the distinctions between different types of magic users, such as mages, sorcerers, and primals. The terms are fascinating, but they could use a bit more exposition to avoid reader confusion. At times,

A very enjoyable magic school story that doesn't feel drawn out, with interesting characters that are easy to like. Read it, it's very enjoyable!
The strangeness of the world has been touched upon only briefly, with no in-depth explanations. I much prefer this over too much description that I just skim, but it might be a bit on the brief side? It's still early in the book, so not really an issue for me.
I never read the author's other story, Dear Spellbook, because while it sounded very interesting, the epistolary format put me off.
This story makes me want to push past that and read it anyway.

Thus far, I have been enjoying this book. I am willing to admit, that I did not read the author's previous work that introduced this world, but it has not impeded my enjoyment of the story. It is very obvious that this author is passionate about their work and this book is worth reading.

This story is exactly what I have been looking for. It’s well written with few if any grammatical errors, but that’s not what makes it worth reading. It’s got all the great elements of fantasy genre stories without the things I’ve grown so tired of on this site. The character isn’t over powered, but he isn’t sniveling and pathetic. He has goals that aren’t vengeance and aren’t sexual. A lot of people will argue against this point as a positive but there’s not any dragons. I’m sick of dragons. The world is interesting with unique fantasy races outside of the normal elves, dwarves, ect. The magic system is interesting and works in a way that isn’t super played out or over done. Honestly my biggest complaint is there isn’t more written as of yet.

This story is one of the very few where I feel the author is a genius. Extremely well thought out character interactions. Lots of payoff as rewards for the long build ups. Incredible references to characters in Dear Spellbook.
The main character has challenges that require real effort to resolve. Nothing seems to be thrown in as cheap fodder. The progression feels like it's earned.
But most importantly there is not a single character that annoys me. In fact I want to know more about each of them. Just so much thought put into each character.
I can't wait to see if the next story arc of Dear Spellbook has any references anything that happens in this story. Or more likely I can see where some things hinted at in this story are filled out more in the next arc.

Good story with believable characters... Most of the time...
But the writing quality (in earlier chapters) is substandard. Grammar is great, but the writing suffers for it, and it hurts. Which makes me sad because the story itself is nice. There's a clear lack of a pre-reader or editor, such as some illogical sentence structure and such.
    EDIT:
It gets better after chapter 15 or so.

As the title may suggest i enjoy the read but i do feel some glaring flaws that stand out significantly. Firstly, the description says reading this will not spoil any content from Dear Spellbook, this is just wrong. Major character deaths get spoilt, plot points and other such mysteries in the original books get spoilt within the first 30-40 chapters alone. Furthermore, I feel as though the book does not read as a standalone book and lacks identity but instead a sequel of sorts to the first 3, significant worldbuilding gets skipped over and exploration of magic and power systems goes under developed, as it reads as though it assumes you have read the other books set in this world. Tying into my previous criticism of the magic system there is a lot of information in the first 10 or so chapters none of which goes explained much and just leaves the reader confused, such as distinctions made between a sorcerer and a mage but no real explanation on what these distinctions are. Or the introductions of primals which i still have no clue what they are I think they're tied to specific Fonts but i genuinely do not know. and beyond that im pretty sure they're meant to be at least semi rare yet seemingly every single person our MC meets is a primal of some sort.

    Current Review:
I enjoyed the story until the Ch 7/8 of the second book. I dropped it after reading Ch 8, that's how illogical and just overall bad the little arc is. The characters actions make no sense, and you have ppl who were fighting for their life a week ago acting like absolute cowards.
