Description
Before history was well-recorded, primordial animal spirits bonded with humans. Millennia later, humans now host animal spirits and are split into tribes named for the species they host. The world of Ulakam is slowly being consumed by a decades-long war pitting the main tribes against the smaller tribes and a group of bandits calling themselves "the Resistance".
Callida Animo was born into this world. Coming from a mixed family of generational soldiers, Callida joined the family business at a young age. In her words, she was bred, born, and raised to be a soldier. And she's good at what she does which inevitably attracts attention that makes her unambitious self extremely uncomfortable. A career detour or two provides new perspectives and an education she never wanted through love, loss, influence and growth. Will it be enough? This is her story.
Written episodically, this slow-burn progression fantasy focuses on relationships and character development through a series of 50 mini-arcs that connect to make a greater whole. (The story would lend itself well to a TV series.)
⚠️ Please be advised that this story contains a wide variety of traumatizing content and dark/adult themes like abuse, torture, sexual assault, and mental illness. I avoid disturbingly graphic details, but the content is there. Reader discretion is strongly recommended. If you would like more specifics, feel free to PM me. Be prepared for the occasional, light swearing and the odd makeout scene that I don't consider sufficient to warrant a profanity or sexual content tag.
💜If you are enjoying this story, make my day!I love engaging with my readers, and feedback in all forms is much appreciated. Thank you!

- Authors DreadRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This is a great web series. It's a sprawling epic set in the mystical world of Ulakam, where humans bond with animal spirits and tribal conflicts shape the narrative. The series is a slow-burn, gradually unfolding with each episode, and it's got me eagerly waiting for the next installment.
The writing style is straightforward and accessible, making it easy to dive right into the story. It's not overly fancy, but it gets the job done. The dialogue is engaging, and the characters' personalities shine through their conversations. However, I do agree that a bit more scene description could help immerse us deeper into the world of Ulakam.
The story is the star of the show here. It's a well-structured narrative with a clear progression and a series of mini-arcs that contribute to the overall plot. It's like a puzzle, with each episode adding a piece to the bigger picture. And let's not forget the war that's shaping the politics of the world - it adds a layer of intrigue and tension that keeps you on the edge of your seat.
Grammar-wise, the series is solid. There are a few typos here and there, but nothing that takes away from the overall reading experience.
Now, let's talk characters. Our protagonist, Callida Animo, is a force to be reckoned with. She's a soldier through and through, but with a goofy and adorable side that makes her feel real. The supporting characters are a fun bunch too, each adding their unique flavor to the story. However, there are quite a few characters to keep track of, and some could use a bit more development.
In conclusion, this is a promising web series that's worth your time. It's got an engaging story, well-developed characters, and a world that's begging to be explored. Sure, it could use a bit more sophistication in its writing style and some characters could use more depth, but it's a journey I'm excited to continue. So, if you're looking for a series that won't run out of material for you to read, this is it. - MeltedCrayonsRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Power Has Sought You, formerly titled The Animo Saga, is as described. It's a gradually developing, episode-driven story. And it is delightful! Totally recommend. 👌
It looks like we will continue to meet new characters throughout the saga. Each of the characters have stories, purpose, and/or perspectives to add something to the greater plot. There is a war shaping the politics of the world. (And we finally get an overview of the war in episode 14 which weirdly works.)
I'm pretty sure every episode has flashback scenes that give context to the current events or, sometimes, are just for fun so we can get to know the MC better, and there is some level of mystery in some of her history. The story is straightforward, linear, and easy to follow. Episodes have been designed to stand alone and slowly progress the greater plot but not so fast that missing an episode makes a huge difference. (Which is nice for long stories so you do not have to try and remember all the details.)
There isn't too much time spent describing or setting up the scene. The story might benefit from more description to orient the reader? But I like that the focus is where it should be on the characters and their interactions.
My favorite thing about this author is the time spent with the characters. You get to know them. This story follows Callida Animo who learned how to be a soldier from her parents and older brother when she was little, and she has an intense personality but is also kind of goofy and adorable in the way she talks with her friends. I'm not very good at describing characters, but Callida feels like she could be a real person to me. And the side characters are fun and life-like too. I like that some of the villains are not all good or bad. Same with the good guys. It makes the world feel real because good and bad is not black and white. It feels like both sides have valid reasons to fight and feel the way that they do, so conflicts are believable but maybe a bit simplistic.
The style - WintydunnoRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0While seeing so many chapters and pages is intimidating, the story beings with a strong start to draw in readers, very quickly delivering a wide range of elements: mystery, romance, multiple interesting characters, action, and worldbuilding. Power Has Sought You is appealing if you're looking for something that won't run out of material for you to read.
Starting with a tournament, the main character is established as a strong fighter with some troublesome relations that quickly drive her away from home, setting the stage for an adventure. This also introduces the culture of the world. A very effective introduction to the world and the story. The only complain is that the early chapters at some points are very diaglog heavy, though these are well written conversations that establish the characters' personalities.
Style: The language is simple and direct, but the descriptions are rich. There's a large world that we can only see parts of, and the disribution of information that is revealed to the reader and the information held back is well balanced. There's enough to understand but still want more.
Story: Slowly, the overall plot comes together. Pieces start to fall into place. The story moves from the main character's adventures to how she is affecting the world overall, instead of just how it affects her. Callida's adventures are nothing boring, but the larger picture is much more interesting as it slowly reveals itself.
Grammar: It is good.
Character: The only, ever so mild complain is that there at times can be too many characters, too many names, that it gets a little hard to remember, but that is the kind of story it is. Not all of them stay around along enough to full develop. The main character and the supporting male lead are both amazingly well done, going through times where I hate them for how stupid they are and love them for how hard they work and fixing their flaws. - pumpkinnutellaRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I adore this story! It might seem daunting to start a multi-hundred page story, but it’s well worth it.
One thing I love is the characters. There are a LOT of characters - but each serves a specific purpose and has unique personalities, which I find an accomplishment to write. There doesn’t seem to be any wooden/unnecessary characters, and so far, they are actually developing and growing. (One of my personal favorites is Arum, he's a sweetheart).
Callida is an intense, driven, passionate soldier, and it is interesting to watch her react in different situations (and dang, she is put through crazy situations). The author also, I’ve noticed, does not shy away from raw, tragic, real world problems, which is refreshing. Callida has to make hard decisions, and she’s not afraid to stand up for others and herself.
And I have to note that while the story is action packed… there is also enough romance to make my fangirl heart happy. :)
Overall, the writing style is simple and engaging. The story is easy to follow but well thought-out, and the world building (with the different tribes) is clever and adds a mystical element that I enjoy. The planning and dedication the author has put into this story is evident, and I am excited to see it continue! - DeflagrationRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5This is a truly excellent book and the fact it is finished is a bonus. The characters have depth to them that is unusual for this site and the plot is complex enough that it is not immediately obvious what is going to happen, took me by surprise (in a good way) a few times.
As a prolific reader I tend to look for books above a thousand pages in length as a starting point but often become bored with the ones on this website. As such the fact i finished this one, fairly quickly and didn't lose interest speaks for itself.
The book is both fun and serious and I would urge anyone reading this to give it a try, the world is unique and though could perhaps be expounded upon a touch in places it doesn't feel lacking.
To the author, thank you for writing this piece, I have enjoyed it greatly. I would be interested to know if a sequel is in the works?
