- Bear_aukRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I really enjoyed the novel so far I like the different interactions that the Pokémon have and they’re not just the foil to Jake. This book is actually about the Pokémon and not just a man to deal with this shit. I also enjoyed The unique depiction of the ghost Pokémon. in most fanfics, we only see the mischievous side and not the scary side
- SnokasRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0It has Pokémon. What else do you need to know?
Pokémon Journey: Stroll is an adorable tale of young Jake, a boy with a lot of spunk and a big heart, who finds himself lost in the world of Pokémon. With positivity and humor, he tries to find his way back home as he meets one mon after the other with personalities as big as they are cute. Really, bring an insulin pen, you might need it!
Stroll is an apt name for this story as it is more about the wholesome discovery of the Pokémon world, reminiscent of the anime. There is some danger as well, though!
Style: it's a style with very rich descriptions that ensures every scenery and encounter comes to life to the reader's imagination.
Story score: if you enjoyed the anime, you're going to love this story. It's more about Pokémons as friends and partners rather than battle junkies.
Grammar: nothing that I noticed that impacted the reading experience.
Character: cute, wholesome, and fun.
It is clear that Emol is a fan of the franchise as a lot of love and care has gone into this story. If you're a fan of Pokémon – or if you just want some extra sugar in your life – this is definitely a recommended read! - Bookman9Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0Story: Pokémon Journey: Stroll takes us on a delightful adventure through the eyes of Jake, a character with a solid head on his shoulders who quickly learns the ropes of the Pokémon world, where behind the cute surfaces of the Pokemon world, everything is not as it seemed. One of the highlights is the author's decision to narrate from the Pokémon's perspective as well, adding depth to the world-building and making it feel more immersive.
Character: The banter between Jake and Emolga is downright adorable, adding a layer of charm to their interactions. And watching Jake teach Trixie how to fly is just downright sweet, showing a tender side to his character.
Style: The world-building is great, with a realism that lurks beneath the cute surface of Pokémon. The author skillfully conveys the dangers of this world without resorting to info dumps, keeping the narrative engaging and smooth. The action sequences are vividly detailed, making it easy to visualize the battles without getting bogged down in unnecessary details. And the incorporation of Pokémon movesets into the fights is seamless.
What's particularly impressive is how each Pokémon encountered so far has its own distinct personality and quirks, hinting at the massive world-building potential of the story. And Venipede emerges as a particularly intriguing character, with his own set of goals and ideology.
Grammar: There are no mistakes. Nothing that takes away the immersion of diving into the story.
Pokémon Journey: Stroll promises to be an exciting ride filled with charming characters, thrilling battles, and immersive world-building. It's a must-read for any Pokémon fan looking for a fresh take on the beloved franchise. - D.J. RintoulRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0When I was a child, I used to imagine that I would be transported to a Pokemon world. I had this fantasy often as a young kid, then decreasingly as I got a bit older. Playing the games as they were released was an outlet for some of these feelings, and then I never thought about them very much after I became an adult. This story pulls me back, though. Back to that age when going to a Pokemon world, becoming a Pokemon master, and above all, befriending and training Pokemon were my fantasy.
The story places me convincingly inside of the mind of a fourteen-year-old boy, Jake, as he randomly appears in a Pokemon world (no explanation for this given thus far, but that's fine with me, since the explanations usually given for such transportation between worlds are almost invariably unsatisfactory or actively detract from the story). Where I am in the story, he remains the only human character in the story, so it depends for its entire effectiveness on the interactions between Jake and the Pokemon around him. Fortunately, the author has put a lot of thought into those Pokemon. They feel simultaneously like animal sidekicks and like full-fledged characters in their own rights. I owned dogs growing up, but these Pokemon do not feel like the pets I've had. Nor do they feel like humans, or even like children. They occupy that happy, strange, in-between space that Pokemon in the old anime lived in. It's incredibly well done. The most powerful thing I can say about these Pokemon as characters is that the Pokemon who have spent any significant time on-screen are all more interesting to me than Jake, even though I'm interested in Jake and his journey as well. Competent writing of distinct, individualized non-human entities isn't easy to do (believe me, I've tried!), but this story makes it look easy. I find myself very interested in where these (Pokemon) characters go next.
The story starts out with Jake thinking about how he can get home, and it seems likely that will continue to - Ellen TaylorRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This was an excellent book. I feel like I do have to mention that, yes, I am a pokemon fan, therefore I was very familiar with the world and the pokemon described. But I feel like the author did a great job of describing the world and the way it works so that even those who don't know pokemon could enjoy it.
Grammar was an easy five stars. As long as the grammar mistakes aren't such that they pull me out of the story, I'm pretty lenient.
Style was great. It mostly followed our protagonist Jake, with the occasional dip into other POV's. Each POV was different and unique, and it was clearly marked when the change happened. I was never confused.
Story was excellent. It is a typical isekai in a familiar, pokemon world, but the author does a great job making it feel fresh. And, again, I feel the author does a great job describing it enough so that people who have never watched pokemon can still get a feel for what it is. And it's not so overly descriptive that those who are familiar with it are getting bored. There's a nice balance.
Characters are fantastic. One of the things that makes this story so fresh is that the author takes the time to let Jake form bonds with the pokemon, and it is so fascinating to see. All the pov's are unique and different, and really show off their different characters.
Overall, a great story. - AressweRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Honestly this is probably one of the best Pokemon fanfics Ive read.
Love the fact that you get both the perspective of the Pokemon and also from Jake, with each character being well written and bringing something unique to the story. The character growth feels natural and which really adds to the narrative.
I honestly cant wait to see where the story goes and to see how each of the different characters evolve overtime. Great work Emol! - One Way JusticeRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Story: It is every 90s kid dream to be Jake... whisked away from bland everyday life to a new world with Pokémon! It’s just a nice chill story to relax with, whilst imagining it’s you being isekai’d to a wonderful world (vs being isekai’s to some horrid other world—there’s plenty of stories about that). I really enjoyed spending some time with the pokemon, chillaxing with my boy blipbug... seeing rookidee fly overhead... spotting some skwovet doing their thing... playing with the friendly yamper, etc. Etc.
Style: The writing style is great for this sort of story—it has vivid descriptions of the world and the pokemon (without being overbearing); the world-building is nicely spread out, so that you never get massive chunks in one go, which would cause pacing issues (not present here). The humour is good and appropriately interwoven (a hair too much imo, but that's personal preference), and does not really detract from the mysteries in the plot (a balance that is tough to get right!)
Characters: Jake has believable reactions to everything, and so he makes a great protagonist to discover the pokemon world through. All his little interactions with pokemon are captivating to read (see above in ‘story’ section), and the camaraderie between Jake and the pokemon is just lovely (makes me wanna be a pokemon master all over again).
Grammar: Nothing much to say here—looked good to me! - Reader203Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0For those who enjoy pokemon fanfics, this is a sign to read this one. The story is just really great with its pacing and characterization of the pokemon world.
I'm already looking forward as to how the story goes with its very loveable main cast of characters.
(For word count) - UnDeadPuffRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5Overall a decent story. Prose doesn't have any glaring issues, nor are there grammar mistakes, at least at first sight. Characters are fairly well built and generally credible. I've been very happy to see actual training slice-of-life sections and interactions between the trainer and his mons.
First large issue is the POV switches. They slow down the narrative and generally don't provide anything that couldn't be presented or built via Jake's POV.
A second, smaller issue is the moment to moment poke-speech translations. I understand that Jake can understand his companions, and to a high degree, but the meaning behind the various chitters should be mostly left to the reader, or you could just has this grow to a full blown ability of his aura. A sort of pokemon whisperer would definitely be a very cool feature.
The only other critique I'd level is at Jake as a character. He feels both a bit too bland, and too unaffected by the complete loss of everyone and everything he knew. For prospective readers an observation instead of a critique - Jake comes across somewhat insensitive and blind to the people around him. - Redchaos-1Royal Road★★★★★ 4.5This story is a wonderful romp through the Pokémon universe with our main character Jake. The story manages to capture the whimsical aspect of Pokémon with Jake's first interaction with them in the opening parts of the first chapter being really cute and tickling the inner child within me. Seriously though, I have read plenty of fanfiction, and very few have managed
The main character Jake is a fun character to read about, the author utilizes the first person perspective in order to make him extremely personable and really allows his personality to shine through.
The Pokémon are also characterized very well. Managing to exhibit a clear personality for none human characters who don't speak is extremely difficult and this story manages to do that without making them too annoying by over explaining any action that he does.
Of course Jake is not the only character and his companion Trixie is a Pokémon that has her own first person perspective sections that grow her and in general her relationship with Jake is heartwarming. This character work has frankly been the stories strongest suit and from the first chapter, the author manages to make you fall in love with the characters.
My biggest gripe with the story might be the chapter length. It can be a bit demoralising to go through 5k to 7k chapters.
