- teloscientistRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0First - I love it. I blew off all my evening's plans to catch up to last post.
And, I had no idea what I was getting into - and by the 4th chapter, I was clear that I was on its ride - discovering what it all meant as I went.
Such a brilliant integration of nothing I have experienced before and a flowing experience as a reader. It kept introducing new and novel ideas and world-building, but I felt comfortable not knowing and discovering as I went.
I am still sort of in awe of the whole thing.
And so much ground covered in so few chapters/words. I am used to webnovels that meander and require 600 pages just to establish the world. At 200 pages, it feels like a complete novel. - CerebralBushRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0It may be a bit early to judge the story as a whole, but what I see right now is really cool. An interesting story set in an equally interesting world, though the latter isn't elaborated upon too deeply yet. Given what happened in this author's other works, "yet" is the emphasis here.
Style is Vitaly's classic. Lots of wacky stuff that inexplicably makes some bizzare kind of sense combined with a powerful sense of atmosphere. Without too much elaboration it intrigues and calls you to read on, and unlike so many works that fall flat after similiar start Somebody Stop Her quickly delivers, dropping new events and worldbuilding details on reader's head while setting up for more.
Not too much to say about grammar - it is good, although there are some typos. I'd expect more, but so far only one I actually remembered is Vitaly confusing prey and pray.
The story, ah the story. A yet-powerless kid of a superhero family finds out that his neighbours are indeed supervillains, but instead of clean report he gets dragged into an insane gallop of an adventure by a young villain, Alexa. There's time travel, murderous monsters from the future and utterly confused people. Hilarity ensues.
Characters are rather simple. Naive but heroic Martin, perplexing Alexa, and so on. They interact and clash between themselves, their differences giving plenty of place for a fun chemistry. I do have one critique, though: sometimes development is way too fast and abrupt. It feels somewhat weird, but doesn't really hurt. In fact, it may well be skipping more "boring" parts of character's interactions that would be unfit for this fast-paced webserial. Comedy is in the tags for a reason, after all. - Dakie SalamanderRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Only first chapter, but entirely catchy. The whole world is set in the supervillains/superheroes world with everything that it incorporate; amazing tech and even cooler powers.
First we have Martin Kilborne... Kitten Mittens! Sorry, Cassiopeia Terror Nova, please don't make me your slave... ehm... Who gave himself a mission to stop his new aforementioned supervillainess.
Did I also mention they are teenagers? Oh yes, Mittens is son of superheroes and the girl, Alexa, is daughter of supervillains. Yup, definitely ends well... She is egoistical, insane and overall-great person, who takes threats by pocket ray-gun and exploding the principal's office as a daily warm-up before she tries to blow up the Moon.
The second chapter is about their first day at school and guess what; they are already making troubles.
The author is an accomplished writer, who knows what he is doing. Grammar is impeccable (from my standpoint).
The style is ligh-hearted as with comedy should be.
Story can't be said much yet with only two chapters out, however it already looks endearing and adorable.
Characters are really well-written from the start.
I can only recommend to read. Really. Go for it. You won't lose your time. It's amazing.
I will expand this review later as the chapter count increases. - DoctorSvetRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Heh, Terranova... the name seems familiar!
Great job as always, Alexius!
I just like the villain aesthetics the neightbours have, the descriptions, the humor...
It is so amazing, and i do not know why...
But yet every book you write makes me amazed, it has it's own eldritch sci-fi aesthetics which brings a smile to my face, anyways, good luck on writing the book! - ElReapingRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0At the time of this review, I had finished chapter 10.
This story so far is incredible, with tropes being introduced and thrown at the window of a forty-story skycrapper. Except the skyscapper exists on the back of an Old One and the ground is littered with fragments of shattered universes. Oh wait, that's the other incredible work done by this author.
SPOILER BELOW!
Still, the feeling is similar with every chapter shattering my expectations and playing a nostalgia reel in my theater of the mind. We have all sorts of scenes to enjoy with just enough descriptions to set the stage and nothing overly flowery. From blasted out wastelands filled with horrific lovecraftian creatures, to Terminator 2 with crazy powered possessed jerks. This review is all over the place but so are my emotions!
If you're familiar with Romanticaly Apocalyptic, then you'll feel right at home with this story. Characters have somewhat similar traits, they are unique. Just a quick parallel, Alexa is the cunning and devious to ze captians aloof sillyness. Snippy and Mittens both share similar experiences with becoming friends and becoming one with entities that won't die even from nukes. Pilot and cottie are a reversal, being Pilot the fried computer that acts human while Cottie is the human that acts like a robot.
Bear in mind, these are gross comparisons and don't do them justice to seperate them on their own, but that's why you have to read it! And if anything about this story is getting my jimmies ruffled, it's the chaos that's looking to be unleashed. The bombs have been placed, their fuses lit and now I'm just waiting for the whole world to blow. - EpikosRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0What does it take to please me as a reader?
Be a little weird. Be a little audacious. Grab me by the hand, guide me into your world, then throw me off a cliff where I fall in headfirst and I'm not going to ask for a parachute. That's the feeling I got when I was reading another smash hit called Vigor Mortis. And from what I'm seeing here, I can already tell this is going to be another smash hit for being so freaking fun!
It's a little dark. It's rather blunt and in your face with certain dark subjects. But the earnest goodness of our "Watson-like" character--Martin--mingling with the madcap, mad-genius, weirdo of a Sherlock--Alexa--who you'll want to doubt because she acts super crazy, and seems unreliable, but turns out to be highly reliable in the most unique and heartfelt ways.
The writing isn't perfect, but it still rates highly for quickly telling me what I need to know in a way that allows me to understand it and move the story forward. I'm sure there are plenty of better writers, but sometimes those writers use too many words to say simple things. Or they fixate on grammar so much that they come across as either dry or purple. The author does well enough to get the message across and in RR, that works!
In the end, all I can tell you is this story is dark, fun, and weird. I want more of this story. - J.M. Clarke (U Juggernaut)Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0This really reminds me of Addams Family meets Rick and Morty.
You've got the story of a young superhero's son who meets a girl that seems like a quirky mad scientist at first, but also has a dark struggle that I feel propels the story to the next level.
The strongest aspect of the story, though, has to be its humour. It's just a lot of fun to read about Martin and Alexa even when they're just talking.
I want to go into more detail, but I found the twists with in the novel really kept me going to I'd like for them to surprise you too. So I'll just stalk about the categories.
The story's still early in its chapters, but so far it's suited the tone well with a nice pacing and strcuture that I found drew me in. Due to the comedic tone, the story regularly goes into madcap hijinks which are then followed by some fairly grim moments. I found so far that was a nice balance.
Style is good, with easy smooth reading, but I think the dialogue is where it really shines. To me the verbal fencing (oh who am I kidding, verbal 'one-sided beatdowns') between Alexa and Martin are the strongest aspects of style.
Grammar is good and there's no mistakes I saw.
Finally, I love the characters. They function in a kind of 'saturday morning cartoon' fashion that I think works really well for the story. If you're looking for a story where every character is a deep study into the human condition, then this isn't the purpose. Some characters, like the teacher, are just there to be straight man to a joke. And that works well.
I think Somebody Stop Her is a lot of fun to read and wind down after a long day, with moments of macabre action and humour.
Give it a shot! - XueyingRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0There is no advanced review, because it is difficult to do for this novel and it looks more like a sketch of a webnovel that could be perfect. I enjoyed reading, fun and quite a hobby, the plot revolves around Martin and Alexa and their fun adventures. Funny, charismatic and even a little buggy. A world of superheroes and super visions, where Alexa seems to be omniscient about everything and is involved in all the problems in the world and Martin is like a sheep tied up on all sides and dragged along the ground by a cart.
- ZamidahRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0One of my favorite active stories on RR right now, it reminds me a bit of Super Minion with how much it suddenly unexpectedly drags a laugh out of me.
The style is impeccable, no awkward phrases or hard to digest bits that slow down my comprehension, or out of character bits that throw me out of the flow of reading the story.
The story itself is great, I keep finding myself thinking of it at random times throughout the day, trying to think of where it's going next, and it's a delight to read a new chapter even when it's focused on the darker bits.
Grammar is perfect, haven't noticed any mistakes at all.
I took off half a point in the character category, mostly because Ember is so ridiculously melodramatic, though I guess that's to be expected of a teen girl who grew up in a superhero society
With a ridiculously strong power, no less.
If you like any of these stories: He Who Fights With Monsters, Prophecy Approved Companion, Super Minion, Reroll, The Perfect Run, or Beware of Chicken, definitely give this story a chance.
Overall I love this story and am excited to see where it's going next. Reviewed at the 27th chapter. - knightaetherRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0A great story super entertaining. Great background with superheroes and villains. A lot goes on but you get the hang of it easily and every almost chapter is good for a laugh. The characters don't just seem to revolve around the main character when they easily could to make it easier they all have their own backstories and stay consistent throughout. The way it's set up makes you look forward to new chapters because you need to know how something turns out.
