Description
A story about magical space pirates, lawyers*, and diegetic narrative elements.
Loosely inspired, in the sense I really like these stories and wanted to try my own hand at something along their lines, by theDiscworldseries andA Long Distance to a Small Angry Planet.
* Much more pirates, space, and magic, than lawyers.

- Lucas WhorleyRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0The author is clearly enthusiastic about their own story. It is infrequent that I come across someone that is able to write so infectiously. By the start of it, the characters forced an eyeroll from me, but as I continued on, it became evident that they have thought about the intricacies of these characters. Alpha was incredibly unlikeable on first blush, but she's obviously flawed. I expected a power-fantasy and what I got was an egomaniacal AI. Very good.
Honestly, I went into this story without reading that it was appropriately tagged as a comedy and that threw me for a loop. That is my own fault. It's incredibly funny and although a few of the jokes do not land, I actually chuckled genuinely several times throughout my reading. Spheres do look notoriously similar from all directions. Also the mere image of slapping documents to the side of a cannonball had me reeling. While the narrative is a bit cheekier than I may have liked, it is definitely someone's specific cup of tea. It's definitely worth a read to see if this brand of comedy clicks with you. Even if not, you still get a brash and great pirate cat-captain and that counts for something. There is a part of me that wants to cuddle Mrs. P and there is a part of me that wants to toss her out of the airlock.
"Pirating in 3064" has incredible potential.
Style
While I can appreciate interjections from the narrator throughout a story, there is a a point where it distracts from the otherwise compelling story that is being told and I find that this is a hinderance rather than a compliment. Besides that, the style is crisp and direct. Perhaps the environments could be better described while the characters are interacting within them. The backdrop does feel rather sterile, but this is hardly a terrible complaint.
Grammar
It is not the worst I've ever seen, but it is also not the best. The grammar itself is largely fine, but the spelling mistakes are a bit more abundant than they should be. If you can handle a few spe - RavensFantasyRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0The story Pirating in 3064 is overall a great story to read with enjoyable characters like Mrs. P. It has some fun concepts throughout the story making it a bit of a comedy in parts. Especially when it came to certain characters and their habits that they had throughout the story. I have very few complaints with this story as I have enjoyed reading it overall.
Style: The overall style of the story is good. I do get a bit distracted by interjections by narrators but that is just me. The author does give a good amount of information throughout the story. Which is always nice to have. Characters seem well developed. The only complaint I would say for me on the style is chapter three as there are really no paragraph breaks which makes it one long text to read.
Grammar: There are few grammar mistakes here and there but what story doesn’t have mistakes through it?
Characters: The characters in the story seem to be well developed. I enjoyed the characters, ones like Mrs. P. As she is an enjoyable character as her cat-like abilities did make me laugh a bit. The other characters, like Alpha and Dewy seem well put together and interesting characters to read.
In Summary: Pirating in 3064 is a great read, great characters, with fun aspects to the story. Overall, it has great potential! - gliglithRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0There's a lot of moving pieces here, but it is safe to say that, for myself, they all seem to click together in a way that tickles my funny bone and resonates with my stylistic preferences and inclinations. There is a manner of complexity here in the manner and voice of storytelling that may give some readers pause, however, I do believe it is well worth it to engage with the unique storytelling method the author employs here. There are tongue in cheek asides here that I love, and in fact there are so many clever little winks and nudges peppered in here that I think I probably missed a good deal of them without recognizing it - in other words, this is a good fiction for reading multiple times, as more complex works sometimes lend themselves to.
The story itself is colorful and engaging - pirates in space is not a tired concept by any stretch of the word, and pirates in space with lawyers is so absurd that I have to love it.
There is a legal debate over someone being a pirate or not - I meant that is just wild and I am here for it.
The one thing I will say about the story is, that is seems to have at least two components to it - that is, there is the base story, the story about space and pirates and lawyers, but there is also something more. Some sort of a strange meta-story that we've only just brushed the surface of here. I do hope that we get more of the meta-story as this tale goes on, as the only problem I had was that I kept wanting to know what was up with the meta story while the actual story was taking place.
Also, needed to throw this is there - nothing wrong at all with grammar as far as I could see, looks tidy and well written here.
Many of the characters are quite strong - Mrs. P. of course is a delight, there's nothing to balk at regarding an interstellar pirate cat. The lawyer, of course, is a riot. But what was interesting while reading this was that there seems to be a character in the narrator as well, and the aforementioned meta story only backs th
