Description

Once upon a time, a witch wished for the perfect daughter - one who was beautiful, cunning, wicked, a master of magic...

But she never said that she wanted her to be cis.

Humiliated to hear after 12 years that her preciously raised "son" is actually a girl, the witch comes up with the most genius solution: to lock her in a tower until she "admits" that she's really a boy.

But when did trying to imprison an omnipotent malevolent entity ever end well for anyone?

Originally written for "Sappho’s Spinning Wheel: A Yuri Garden Anthology", "Petrosinella, the Perfect Witch's Daughter" is a witchy retelling of Basile's bawdy original fairytale, and a rowdy love letter to all those deliciously wicked witch's daughters we were told to despise as children.

What can I say? This is the story of Repunzel mixed with a few other hints of other fairytale stories, but queer. It's retold in the tragically classic story most trans women and lesbians experience in their families.
From a craft standpoint, is it perfect? No. Do I wish there was more? Yes. But it is an amazing and well written story.
I 100% recommend giving it a read, it takes about 20 minutes, give or take 10 minutes, to read.

I do not like to give this 3 stars, but the interesting story decided to wrap up with a bunch of rushed, cliche power fantasy jokes. The plot has a few issues right off the bat such as parsley deciding to make a perfect Mary Sue character in every facet except for the sex, but doing so for the gender - and other unspecified demands. It gets everything else about the physical and mental attributes except apparently it delivers a baby boy. The witch still decides to give a decidedly feminine name. The whole thing goes so far as to have the spell locking her away with the bit: “No boy or man will ever open you!”
Therein lies the issue, Petrosinella is a master of magic, identifies as female and because of some magical door - cannot let herself out? This Master of Magic, who surpassed all her tutors as a mere child and has all this power - can't figure out something more appropriate? Weirder still is that Petrosinella is convinced her mother doesn't understand the difference between sexes - as if somehow that could even be possible. She's not a toadstool or something. From there it devolves into just ridiculousness - and while a comedy, the plot should not become senseless as it does. The end speedruns everything in wish fantasy in a few paragraphs and ends.
This could easily have been about Petrosinella making her own declarations, taking her own steps and overcoming issues of dysphoria through self-realization and a bit of magic. It didn't need to have Petrosinella be a total Mary Sue and in doing so cheapen every interaction to a farce or about how no one can ever compare to her. That is not funny, it is frustrating in light of the rest of the story. Perhaps I don't get the joke, but Petrosinella is just mean, petty and irritating in this.
