- LuciferLilacRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I've read the first full book, as released on Kindle. It is unclear to me at this time if this will be the end of the story, though it would be a shame if it was.
Overall, this is a pretty fun story! We ride along with a very enjoyable, extremely manic protagonist thrillseeker, who is nicely contrasted by her deadpan AI companion.
There's some issues with a lack of developed side characters; Ahvie, her first alien companion, fills a wonderful and much needed role here, and is generally the most fun character to see her through the eyes of. It's a shame both that she's conspicuously absent for the final arc, and that another character with much potential, Zil Rossi, never really gets to step up into this companion role the way it feels she's meant to in said arc.
The world building is excellent, and it feels that- assuming future books are coming- there's plenty more coming to explore. I very much enjoy a good OP protagonist, which our Diana definitely is.
Overall, the action and pacing is frenetic and exciting, and very easy to follow along with and get lost in.
My only real issue lies mostly in the last arc, and the emotional whiplash. Vague but still significant spoilers ahead:
Diana in this arc is acting on behalf of one party in a conflict, where she has fairly unambiguous awareness that it's likely that she's getting played. She clearly has reservations about whether she's on the right side of this conflict.
Nevertheless, despite vocalising this, she remains an active and enthusiastic participant in actions that, if she *is* on the wrong side, are clearly equivalent to mass murder. She delights in getting her kicks, and overall it makes her look like an unrepentant monster.
Now, this isn't, in and of itself, necessarily... Bad writing. I would point to characters like the Alabaster Admiral, in Benjanun Sriduengkaew's stories; a hot power fantasy lesbian character who is nevertheless meant to be understood as a genocidal monster.
The problem is that the author s - RznRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Diana loves racing to the point that she finds herself launched into a new adventure. ChaOS is her trusty AI companion that acts as a one-AI team to support the reckless and driven heroine along the way. The first half of the story is about making it and racing in the new galaxy, and the worldbuilding is good. My only gripe with the timing is the loose way 'cycles' are used to denote time. Ahvie is quite an interesting character and I really wanted to see more of her in the latter half of the book.
The story does take a significant turn (see Space Opera tag) and it is not purely racing. The story is good and with more than a little help from ChaOS, Diana has the tools she needs to put up a good fight in the races and still remains intelligent without making ChaOS a problem or a deus ex machina. The restrictions of Diana for the sake of her pride is something that is nice to see. The story was an interesting ride and while not perfect by any means, it was enjoyable and that counts for a lot. Having a lot of worldbuilding crammed in was a nice bonus, and it helped ground us in a strange new setting. - Shades98Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0I would love to see this book be expanded to a true Space Opera. While it starts out about a race, but who says a war can't be a race too. Love the concept and would live to read about this Cosmos as a Space Opera with our Chaos agent being the centre of it.
- AmphitriteRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0"Past the Redline" by RavensDagger is an exhilarating, action-packed journey through space racing with a dash of humor and chaos. Diana Slowbane, a wildly determined space racer, literally breaks the laws of causality, propelling herself and her trusty AI companion, ChaOS, into uncharted territory. The result? A thrilling mix of interstellar races, chaotic encounters, and plenty of mischief.
The story blends fast-paced racing sequences with comedic moments, especially when Diana’s insanity clashes with ChaOS’s overpowered yet bewildered AI. With nanomachines, futuristic tech, and non-stop action, this completed series is a rollercoaster from start to finish. A must-read for fans of sci-fi racing and fun-filled chaos, "Past the Redline" earns a solid 5 stars for its unique premise, adrenaline-fueled scenes, and engaging characters. - faeryblossomRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Binge read this laughing the whole time. I can't wait for more. It was intriguing, the characters we'll developed and the love for racing, an all consuming passion, incredibly relatable.
everyone being flabbergasted at the length length, so she'll go to, in order to win, was rather funny, and the reactions for even better. This last chapter really hasn't curious as to not only the results of the race, but how people feel when the gambling pans out. - DrawdethePotatoRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This story it's great read when you are just searching for something new and can have time to be under the ray of sun besides your window.
I ate this in a single day but was worth all the time spent reading.
The stories end when you need more but can be a good ending too since the author specifically made this story as a test for future space opera.
10/10 - A Would Be GodRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Its rather light hearted novel and the kind you can't stop reading until the end :D
Diana is overpowered but that doesn't stop her in seeking chalanges so she can show to all her skillset.
On a personal note it's hard to imagine how world would look like when people can get their hands on self replicating nanotechnology, yea grey goo is scary but possibilities seem... amazing - Haru Desu KattoRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This was a delightful read. I was reluctant at first, because the premise sounded so outrageous, but it was worth every page.
Style - good writing with excellent choice of words and plenty of banter. The writer's command of the language and how to communicate the action as well as the humor within is flawless.
Story - interesting setting and excellent pacing. I appreciate any story that doesn't focus too heavily on just conflict. My favorites were the slice-of-life chapters, although the racing chapters were obviously fun too.
Grammar - nigh-perfect. Easy to understand and quickly communicates to the reader. I only ran into one sentence that I had to reread again. Most of the time, I didn't even notice the words because it was so easy to read.
Character - I'm marking this as a five even though the characters are no deeper than a dewdrop. However, that is perfect for this style of comedy. In fact, the writer's tenacity in sticking to a consistent characterization makes it even more fun. If you'd started inventing realism and additional motivations, it wouldn't have fit the genre.
This one is now one of my favorite reads here on RR - I only wish there was a sequel. I suppose I'll have check out the writers' other works... - 1Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0I'm not usually one for reading anything like this, but RavensDagger's writing is so addictive that I figured trying it out couldn't hurt. I was not dissappointed. The fast-paced plot is gripping, and the casual absurdity of it all is of the utmost hilarity. Overall, it's a fun read, and worth checking out. Enjoy!
- JeslikRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0great story, fast paced, not too deep on history and world-building, but heavy on action and fun. (a nearly insane race-obsessed nutball from a future earth, with her AI sidekick and enough nanotech to whip out any number of components and weaponry, accidently throws herself into the far expanses of space, accidently and uncontrollably discovering a version of FTL travel. On arrival in a new system, teeming with 70+ sapient alien races, signs up for a race to earn $$; with her winnings, rebuilds her ship and continues to race. Its about racing. And its Ravensdagger. only negative - trying to keep up my reading speed with her writing speed)
