    The setting is best described as a post-apocalyptic or part of it. The setting is never described in such a way as to answer the key questions of how or why things have degraded to this state. That context would make sense for some distant future, but not when we clearly have a contemporary setting inexplicably changed - and that inexplicably comes from the author alone.
    The story itself was good, until it had a really distracting cultural reference that shattered my suspension of disbelief and then had to cap it off at the end with an outright insulting exercise. It was frustrating. The execution was better than good, it was great - up until those two bits struck. It is perhaps a good thing the story ended there and not was simply a chapter end, because it was off-putting and a complete shift that would sour a lot of readers.
