- rusticsoldierRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0First thought I hate xianxia stories. Absolutely hate them.
Xianxia stories progress this was as they get stronger. The first lose mercy, than all morals. Finally they reach god hood as nothing more than beasts. That is pretty much the whole genre. You read a story where everyone is bowing and scrapping. The chosen one plots kills, steals and rapes his way to power. Once they are in a position of authority. They use it to our there friends in positions of power while reserving all the important stuff to themselves. Because they are greedy.
This story. Has a real man. Someone who does not bow to base desires. When he gain strength he does not go around asking people to bow before his glorious self. He is still there helping people. He is still a good person. Not a monster. He does not hurt people because he can.
Okay now for the story. It is very well crafted. Worth money. I already plan to purchase. And if I can find a way get it in print for my nephew.
So that covers character, and the story. Now for the background plot. As n how much does the author step in to give powers and luck to the mc. There a few spots. But it is less than many other authors. The author has not crafted a story without plot armor yet. It is still acceptable. Okay finally is the story an enjoyable read. Yes it is. I could enjoy reading aloud this story to my neices, and nephews. - siegelionRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0It's everything I love about xianxia minus everything I hate about xianxia
- Futhark the ElderRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Like many on RRL, I read a lot of xianxia and wuxia. I must also admit that I give up on almost all of them because of the repeated use of idiot plot. (Idiot plot — when the protagonist does something stupid and the plot is then driven by his attempts to dig himself out of the hole he’s dug for himself.)
To my pleasant satisfaction, this xianxia story has a protagonist who is consistently sensible. He’s also loyal to his friends and doesn’t take advantage of the kindness of others. You’d think this is the way it should be. I also reckon it’s the way it should be, but it so seldom is in xianxia.
So far I’ve read book 1, which was excellent, and have begun book 2, for which I have high hopes. It is just so bloody nice to have a main character who doesn’t frustrate and disappoint you with attacks of utter imbecility.
The author also deserves a compliment for a good mastery of language and attention to detail. It appears he takes comments seriously and has edited text in response to feedback. This makes the man a treasure. Hats off, sirrah.
Finally, the cultivation system is a novel variation on familiar systems, and has the priceless advantage of being explained clearly to the reader. This is rare in xianxia, either because the original Chinese/Korean author was making it up as he went along or because the translator was incompetent or both. So once again, respects to the author of this story. - LordofthepiesRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I'm always very picky about grammar. I have to say, this story has some of the best grammar of any on this website. The story is very good too, and the update schedule is nice.

I've read over 500 novels. From Japanese LN, to Korean, and even all novels currently on WW. I hated btth wdqk, and tgr with all my life. I loved CD and gave it a 4.5, I loved DE and ga e it a 4.2. I've drop Er Gen as an author, but I did somewhat enjoy issth which I have 3 stars. The reason why I am sharing a bit of my taste is that if you have similar taste to mine you can either ignore or take this review to heart.
With that being said now I shall review this novel called "Painting the Heavens":
Original, fresh, balanced switch between povs, honest and fair growth, no boring info dumps, great story development, cero plot holes, side characters that remain relevant and have a purpose , and an mc that actually has a character.
I can't praise this story enough, I just hope and pray that it stays as good and does not deviate from its current flow.
With that my fellow daoist I hope this review aids you on your paths of cultivation. 5 stars very well deserved - AmathalRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I’m doing this review only eight chapters in.
What i I enjoy the most about this novel. Book, or whatever you want to call it. Is that the author will explain some terms and word usuage, usually at the end of a chapter if it has it in it. I enjoy this cause Wuxia novels while enjoyable sometimes do have confusing elements I don’t understand. He or she clears that up for me quite well. - ZirRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This story is at times confusing, but it is important to remember that it is written as a series of books and not a webnovel. The bits of mystery and scheming are refreshing. The world is gradually getting fleshed out, and as of half way through book 2 the mc is transforming.
The side stories that flesh out the side characters are very well done. The mc is a bit too naive and concerned about money at times considering his mental age. The whole fate thing is tricky/4th wall breaking but acceptable.
People complained about that fox illusion but it helped the timid pencil pushing mc grow a bit of a spine. I also really liked the luck talisman explanation.
Again the mc comes off as an idiot a few too many times for my liking, maybe just to make wang jun seem more competent but i think xin'er could have filled that role much better. (for all those early infodump explanations)
Also this is the nicest cultivation world to ever exist but maybe that is just the mc living in his oblivous bubble. To be fair he has a lot of stuff to do.
The darker themes that came around in book 2 were super welcomed.
Overall I have no major complaints, this is better than an iet story for the most part. Actually now that I think about it, him dropping the whole almost being murdered by Zhou with basically no reaction is pretty weird, but again maybe he is just trying not to think about it. - DromuthraRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5Having blazed through these novels, I have to say that I was extremely impressed with the work. Aside from generally skilled writing, well-scripted combat scenes, and solid characters, the aspect that impressed me the most was the narrative pacing. The transition between crises and challenges feels fair to the characters, and is done in such a way that recognizes that there still exist problems for the characters to solve without cheapening the various victories that they achieve.
My one complaint I suppose is that for all the effort that our lovely protagonist Cha Ming puts in, the other side characters - specifically Gong Lan and Feng Ming - seem to advance tremendously seemingly without difficulty on their part, and Cha Ming is forever in a position of having to play catch-up with them. While he has his own skills that they cannot replicate, Cha Ming seems to have to put much more effort into solving his problems than they do. It would be nice if he could finally catch up, if only for a bit, as opposed to constantly being an underdog.
That nitpick aside, these books were an absolute pleasure to read. Cha Ming makes for an excellent protagonist, and the growth of his skills is kept to a level that is both measured and interesting to the readers, while providing him with enemies he must legitimately struggle against. As long as you aren't looking for some sort of god-like protagonist, I highly recommend giving this series a chance. - Unknownsaint171Royal Road★★★ 3.0It's a pretty decent story, though it doesn't feel well thought out. But i really like the fact it's not a harem or cliche
I'm not really attached to the MC, he doesn't seem reliable though i do like how he questions himself but shaking up after killing a demonic beast was a bit far fetched. Considering his high mentality. Wang Juan is more of a Mc then the MC lol. It's pretty silly how a powerful man could fall in love with a newly cultivator girl - some total kretinRoyal Road★ 1.0Boy, reading this again in the morning I realize that I was in a really bad mood when I wrote this. The author even wrote me to give this a fair chance and try it again and read further this time, vaguely talking about it getting better later on. Maybe I will. But I will still leave the original text here, under the updated version.
I should also clarify that I could not get over chapter 13 of book 1 and that the author seems to think it gets better. I don't know, didn't read further because I could not.
My original gripe with this still stands, so let's formulate it with less venom this time.
The characters might as well have been taken off of a steam press, as flat as they are at the start - basically a trope for everything. I will give it a chance and say that they might get better even if I don't think so.
When you start your charaters as cutouts of anime stereotypes, there is usually very little that can be done afterwards - you don't get savory broth from a base of a sweetcake. Not saying that sweetcake could not be done competently, but that would in my opinion require a little bit of rewrite and some fleshing out of characters when introducing them, so that the sweetcake is not done from a bought powder mix.
So far it's just meeting anime character 25-a, briefly telling us their name, hinting at their trick and rushing them off stage for the wish fullfillment to take place.
The saving grace for main character is that it's a grown man in tall muscular teenager's body (yahoo! the dream of every jaded adult!) with very handsome face.
There was pretty much no main character development up to this point, because the character is an adult, thus basically developed. He is not complete moron, nor is he a chyunibiu (or how is it written) or a dense mofo with a harem of eye candy. He is an engineer that decided that he will do thigs his way (and that is basically his only defining trait so far). There was no struggle for the character to go through yet, so it could de
