I'm going to deviated from my usual reviewing style here to talk about comedy. This author at the very least has some comedic chops, which thank god for that I've been looking for a deckbuilder LITRPG besides the goblin summoner to dig into.
So a lot of this review will instead rely on potential. There is a lot of potential here, and I hope that this author actually does pull through and do the whole write-a-thon. I want to see where it goes.
Okay so comedy. One of my favorite things in writing is running gags and this one has a couple... let's say good gags that are repeated a few times. This is excellent and I think that opening the book in this was is helpful. Running gags, like the ones in hot fuzz are great when they work, and as you are writing think about how theese gags can be used again, later in the book, etc.
anyway, here is how to do it, comedy wise-----------------
As the duo walked toward the street, Dean hoped that whatever allowed him to understand the two men from earlier was still in effect. He'd spent three years learning Spanish in high school with questionable results and if he had to learn another language in this new world he didn't know what he'd do.
    -------------------------------------
And then what I would have the author do is to start this whole line of
"questionable results" as a running gag ETC
Grammar 5/5, but enable suggestions helper please.
Style 5/5 Please fix the spacing. (It is too spread out. I know that this is a formatting thing, so easily fixable.)
    Character 5/5
Story 5/5 SO FAR. IT had potential, I hope that the author makes good on it.

Litrpg has a tendency to focus on typical role playing games, with little to no focus on some of the other kinds of games. So whenever I see a fps, deckbuilder, monster tamer, I kind of attack reading it with a ferocious curiosity. That being said, when the market is unsaturated, you don't tend to get great quality. So imagine my relief when I found something that had boundless potenetial.
Minus some personal opinion on formatting, the style itself is great. A dry wit mixed with a slow burn world building progression while also bringing you into the overall story is always welcome to me, and Pain and Tears nails that on the head. The pacing is great, and the atmosphere and detail Binky writes is much appreciated.
I didn't see too much of a problem on grammar. There was a lot of switching on whether the construct was using quotes or not which led to come confusion, but I think that's more leant to the aforementioned formatting. Aside from that, my only recommendation is to turn on suggestive edits so people can catch that for you.
The story itself is an interesting take on typical tropes. As much as prologues tend to fall flat around here, this one is important to the story as leads you properly through the transmigration process. The wolrdbuilding is slow, and as much as I would like to know how the actual cardgame works by now, the shorter chapters easily explain why I haven't. Binky has a great story to tell here, and I'm willing to wait to see where it goes.
Dean as a character is still fairly static this far into the story. He is told to be an against the grain type personality, but other than a few responses, he works better as a basic stand in. I know it's still early and he's getting used to the world, so I won't knock him too much, but a little more personality and flair would go a long way to make him stand out.
Overall, I'm excited to find a deckbuilder RPG that has a good grasp of concept. My only hope is that the author keeps putting it out and lets it g
