Owlnother World

Description
In a hospital bed somewhere on Earth, I breathed my last breath.
Or at least I thought I did.
Then suddenly, I was flying through a void of nothing.
As I landed in a new world, my life as an owl had started.
Follow this girl on her journey in a new world, with a new life as she explores cultures, peoples, magic and herself. What mysteries does the world hold? Where does the magic come from? And what does she want to do with her new lease on life?
This is my first story and I want to use it to explore writing people, character development, environments, relationships and all the other things a good story should have. I would be happy if you give it a chance and for me, feedback as well as criticism.

- SecretDragonRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I've always loved non-human lead stories, it scratches an itch deep within my soul. It's hard to find good ones though and I definitely think this is one of them. It's engaging, fun, you're not immediately thrust into a world, instead we explore it with the mc. I like the magic system, it's unique and different, though not so much it becomes jarring. Progress is pretty solid and I like the characters that are introduced. Since I've said so many positive things I'll have to give a negative critique too, or no one will believe me. Sometimes there's a bit too much 'tell' with the magic system and not enough 'show'. This is apparent in the early chapters when it's only the mc and there's no other input, but it does flesh out the magic system nicely and it lessens when you go further into the story. Good luck to the author, I haven't really left any comments because I am mostly a lurker, but I appreciate you for writing this story.
- Zenopath (AEV)Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0Despite a brief stopover with a goblin village and a stay at a wizard's house, this Owl MC is not a nice owl who wants to stay in one place. True, so far she's mostly been rampaging among people who aren't that nice (orcs), but this owl is a bit too eager to "gain exp".
That being said, this novel is actually pretty enjoyable. I really enjoyed the intro part where MC learned to be an owl. I liked the parts when she's figuring out how magic works, its a fairly interesting magic system. And the fights are good.
I'm lowering the rating by half a star because so far there's no objective here. The owl is just roaming around trying to get stronger like a murder hobo does. She lacks any friends, or reason for any of her actions beyond "magic is cool" and "I want to be stronger". That's not a deal breaker though. I'm still reading this and enjoying it. I just hope there is a point at which MC finds some thing she cares about other than her own power.
Edit: I added that last half star because in later chapters she does start pursuing other objectives besides powerleveling. - GershRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Good owl who I like a lot.
kinda unnecessary that she has memories of her past life but it is a hole almost every author falls into in order to give their character wisdom. Very fun story with a good magic system so far and relatable characters. She gets stronger in a way that makes sense. Slice of life story with no clear motive but the author makes it work. Could use more of a plot but not bad at all - yuplustRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5Owl doesnt want to be human, has an inner conflict but nothing bad just an example of the discovery part in the story. It also has a focus in crafting and the development of relations and communities leaving everything else a little behind(survival,fighting...).
Races? i liked them, the system? normal and simple requiring effort, the world and the magic are part of the charm this story has to me.
Its a bit slow sometimes i cant think of something else that bothered me here. - Lin_Kuei_OminaeRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5The story starts a bit rough like explained in some of the other reviews.
Like the MC coming across like a serial killer and lack of a character.
But in between there are still several gems and once you get to the later chapters (70+) it really turns into very nice story.
Even though you may still have the "killer" in the back of your mind, expecting something strange to happen at any moment, this is more and more a thing of the past and could be actually seen as the developement stage of the MC. Which by now turns into something much more likable.
At that point the characters (including the MC) get a lot of personality, interesting interactions and in general the pacing of the story is just right in my opinion.
My only complaint would be the moments the MC is crafting something, as the description is really hard for me to follow. But its often only a half a chapter and the endresult and what it does is well explained. So if you skip the thaumonobabble (technobabble for magics) you get quickly back into the actual story, which is really enjoyable.

nearing Chapter 200, the story gets better and better. There are several chapters so well written, they can easily compare to RoyalRoads best stories. And the best, there is no decline in sight. In contrary, every new chapter is interesting to read with wonderful characters, interactions and a captivating plot. - luda305Royal Road★★★★★ 4.5This is a fun little story of being reincarnated as an owl on a fantasy world with a system. There's the typical stuff, and it's somewhat akin to monster evo, but not quite.
It gets a little murderhobo-y and the protagonist rationalizations around that are not entertaining. But it's been a fine read. Wondering where it's going now.
hoot. - nzswc3iRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5I like the world in which the story takes place, the different elements / how the magic works.
I also like how the story is written, it reads nicely. The style is not ground-breaking but does nothing bad either. Which is a good thing, really. Grammar is fine as far as I'm concerned.
I started a few weeks ago writting a review for it right at the end of the orc-arc (I like this name, orc-arc) about the owl being a tad too genocidey, but the introduction of a specific friend in the following friend-arc (?) and the internal reflection of the mc on the subject (and the fact that it does make sense story-wise) make me feel like this was more the mc growing out of both her human/monster molds and becoming more... herself? And yeah, I like that. - BzaurpaRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0I loved how it started. MC was an owl, not a human trapped in owl body. I enjoyed reading about how she was learning from her parents, then forced to countine on her own. Her personality was perfect, she had a lot of animalistic instincts, but at the same time thanks to her human side she was able to exceed them; explores new things and tries to become strong enough to have her freedom to do what she wants and not simple animal who only wants to survive. She was ruthless and enjoyed killing her targets, because she liked being owl and owls are predators.
I don't get why people complain about her being murderhobo. She isn't human or ork, why should she feel remorse about killing someone who would hunt her to have chicken wings for dinner. And she isn't even a true murderhobo who kills everything she sees, she killed only one or two groups of orks who hadn't offended her and they were warriors during mission in the forest, not some poor children or elders. I say it's racist against owls, when human protag massacres orks village no one bats an eye.
So I greatly enjoyed first 80 or something chapters, they were awsome. Unfortunately, there were some changes in MC personality in last chapters.
Suddenly MC personality turned 180 degrees. Where before she got experience for doing owl things, now she gets it for making friends. She stops carring about hunting and getting stronger. She starts living in community and spends entire days working with dwarf on new technology to defend dwarfen cities. She makes friends with people, when few chapters before she decided to meet a sapient cat only because cat hadn't meet other sapiens, so she wouldn't try to betray her. Instead of having fun hunting her meals she starts to enjoy tea and thinks how should she make it when in wild. Her only reason to fight strong monster is to help her friend. She's shy and nervous about how dwarfs will react to her working. It's like her whole owlish character went to trash.
Even world suddenly chang - GLMRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0This story is actually quite well written, and it ticks all the boxes a litrpg should, the only real difference being that the MC is a monster own and doesn't bullshit her way into a human form in the first 10 chapters.
Grammerwise its very solid, and all the "numbers go up" scenes are very entertaining and a good "fix" for all you litrpg lovers out there.
But it then falls into the most obvious trap a litrpg could fall in, and as far as I've read it still there.
The MC is really not relatable, she is the very definition of murderhobo, and the whole story to this point is her killing stuff and getting stronger, then killing more stuff to get stonger...
At this point you'll say "Thats what progression litRPGs are about, WTF you conplaining about?" And while yes you'd be right, this novel is missing something crucial to actually make the progression enjoyable, and there are really 2 options for that.
Option 1 which would be a character driven narrative to ground the progression, this is not acconplished because the MC is a bland character with barely any personality, that just deciding to have the decency to not murder anything and everything (and I mean everything) that moves for the XP requires a whole instrospective rant should tell you something (and she'll still do it if she thinks she can get away with it...)
Option 2 is a overarching narrative that makes the powerups actually mean something, with side characters and an antagonist so the MC has a goal besides "KEEL! GIT STRONK! KEEEELLLL MOAARRR!"
None of that happens, and Its not rare to find myself expenctantly hoping for the story to introduce a side character PoV to both expand the actually quite interesting world the MC finds herself in, and to hopefully introduce some actual stakes into the storyline besides all the murderhoboing.
Overall its a solid story, but it doesn't go anywhere even though it seems to have a very solid setting. - jklmRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0With a title like that, who can resist another owl pun in the comments?
This is a fun story that I will definitely check on for updates.
One of the things I like is that the main character does not have clear memories of her life before she became an owl. I like this because 1) it adds some mystery to her background, and 2) it makes her easy acceptance of her new life more plausible.
Her first few encounters with other sapient beings are interesting.
I like how the first group she becomes friends with is actually a village of goblins. And that her use of the skill "Identify" allows others to know she is sapient even if she can't communicate.
I can't wait to see the where this story goes!
