Never the main character, always in the background.
It was supposed to be a quick job: get in, do the bare minimum to still get paid, and get out. It would be quick, swift, and wouldn't take long. Now stuck in a seemingly familiar world that operates by completely unfamiliar rules, Life, who has been, begrudgingly, put in charge of the fate of a world that operates on unknown logic, must personally navigate through this world and its inhabitants,
As an Overpower, someone who manages the fictional worlds created by man, it is his job to make sure the story’s plot doesn’t deviate too much and ensure to remain in the background as much as possible.
All the while having no previous experience whatsoever with the story’s quirks
What to expect:
A Psychological/Drama, Character-focused Magical Girl story.
Slow-Burn
A love letter to fiction, where each relevant character represents a different genre in fiction with a few twists to make them fresh. Ex: Isekai, Shonen, Magical Girl, Tragedy, Cultivation, Regression, Tokusatsu, Horror, and many others. All are united under one theme: life and how each character will choose to live theirs.
Chapter release: Once every week on Wednesday.

- ntns55Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0Overpower's: Life is Magical shows a richly constructed world where the protagonist, Life, juggles humor, mystique, and power, all while maneuvering through a complex setup of powers. The setting is full of supernatural elements, the story blends fantastical magic and modernity, resulting in a distinctly immersive atmosphere that appeals to fans of urban fantasy and magical realism.
Life, the protagonist, is a unique character who embodies both confidence and nonchalance as he strides through the city and interacts with his environment, creating a layered portrayal that draws readers into his perspective.
The narrative shines in its meticulous balance of humor and tension, allowing readers to connect with Life’s internal monologue as he reacts to various situations. This contrast between the trivial and the monumental keeps the story from feeling overly dramatic, making Life's character relatable and his journey more engaging. His interactions with other characters, such as Nozomi, introduce elements of mystery
The story's pace is carefully constructed to allow readers time to process Life's insights and surroundings, moving seamlessly from moments of reflection to high-stakes action.
All in all, I would highly recommend giving this a read. There are some amazing timings and engaging twists that are absolutely worth the read. - ShirimeRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This is a fun anime-inspired superhero story for you to enjoy! Give it a shot!
The author of this story speaks self-taught english, which is something you'll pick up very early on. The word choice, sentence structure, and overall pacing tends to drag in places, but if you're used to reading light novels or translated webnovels, that won't be an issue for you at all.
Think the beginning of My Hero Academia except Deku finds a dog instead of All Might. It's an oversimplification, but that's the general vibe the early story gave off to me. The characters, their interactions, and the trajectory of the story are all cute.
Likely my biggest gripe. Again, I won't be harsh because the author is self-taught, but there were a decent amount of grammatical errors and run-on sentences. Still, they aren't so egregious that it takes away from the story. Very quickly I found myself mentally correcting grammar as I read, so this stopped being an issue for me.
Where this story shines. Every character introduced in within the ten chapters I read for this swap all had distinct personalities that we get to see shown off both through words and actions. The author clearly has a penchant for character writing, and that shows with this story!
It's a shame the story is on Hiatus as of me writing this. It's a fun read, and I know whatever the author writes next will be even better. Keep it up! - SovranoRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Style: The style of the story jumped in between our MC's perspectives, each with its own takes and development of the plot. For what it's worth, I have no problem with it, but I do admit the pacing is a bit slow. The first chapters of the story are all about the mundane interactions of Nozomi and her friend, how she met the male MC, and then back to his perspective about his job in that world.
The action felt like a superhero's origin story and I like it. I especially loved the special move Nozomi pulled at the end, and also the author's neat idea about how they came up with it.
Grammar: Some of the sentence's structure felt a bit clunky and awkward due to unnecessary information, but nothing too jarring so far. I could read the effort the Author put in and I appreciate the love for the work.
Story: It is brimming with potential! Even as I read it, I kept thinking about how will the author pan out the story in the future. The relationship between the Life and the other guardians. Who was this acquaintance of his and what would their roles be in the grand scheme of things? Most of all, will this thing with Nozomi and the others become just another arc in the MC's journey, or will he stick until the end? Time will tell.
Character: I like Nozomi and her friend, but as for Life...Well, not so much. Nozomi felt like this cheerful, naive, and innocent girl, who apparently was infamous for her tardiness. Her settings were straightforward and simple, but I liked it. But as for our male MC. I don't know...For someone who had been living for thousands of years, and was sent to be the problem solver, he looked no better than Nozomi herself, who knew next to nothing. He was unprepared and did things by the go which could serve as his charm if only he was sent into that world without any details whatsoever.
Conclusion: All in all, this was a fun read. The story was relaxing, and the action was compact and fast-paced. Moreover, the character design of the magical girls seemed dop - VioletMoonRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0So, a few caveats with this review. This is written by a writer who has learned English as a second language and is largely self taught. With that in mind, this story is exceptionally well done. However, if objectively viewed without that consideration, it needs some work, but that work is mostly in style and grammar. Let's get into it.
Style: Has a lot of vivid detail, but is difficult to follow at times due to confusion surrounding who is talking and who is thinking. There are times when far too many commas are used when the sentences could be broken up more smoothly. It does at times detract from the story, thus I ranked it 3.5.
Grammar: This is probably the weakest link, and is almost entirely due to the ridiculous nature of English grammar. I'm confident that with an edit or two this could get figured out in no time. However, in it's current state it suffers from significant issues as it shifts back and forth between past and present tense frequently. Even just picking one or the other would help immediately.
Story: I thought of this one kind of like an anime, in a way, and that helped me visualize and get on board with the story. It's a story about a magical girl learning about her powers and helping her friends while dealing with the big bad dudes. Pretty neat overall, and I think it struck a good blend between light hearted and serious. Was pleasant overall.
Characters: The characters were simple yet fairly realistic. Teenage girls are absurd humans and this story captured that decently, I thought. I like real characters so this was decent for me.
Overall, just under a four star, but could easily get bumped up if the author can snag an editor to help with the grammar and style. - ZarthosRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This story is interesting and tries something new with the Magical Girl Anime tropes. While good, some minor things hold it back.
Style: The style is great, and the prose flows really nicely. The nitpick which made me hold back half a star was the way the characters' thoughts were written. Most of the time, they don't feel like the way people think and are just used for exposition, which feels slightly unnatural.
Story: The story is great. There's some mystery about who some of the characters are and how they came to be involved in the story, which makes you want to read more. It is also quite faithful to the magical girl genre, which is a plus in my book.
Grammar: While I haven't checked as meticulously as I did for some of my other reviews, I didn't find any mistakes. There was nothing that detracted from my reading enjoyment.
Characters: The main character is juvenile—which is to be expected as she is 14 years old. Still, this can be a turn-off for people who like more mature characters. While I'm sure she will grow during the course of the story, simply be warned. I must say this isn't really the type of character I can connect with, but that's only my subjective opinion.
All in all, a really great read. I recommend it! - damienrjamesRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I realize this was a slice of life and expect the story to be slow at first, but I guess I'm used to reading stories that have more of a impactful event sooner rather than later. But to make up for the slow start, things do get interesting when the ball gets rolling. The biggest part is that the pages keep flipping and when you get to that stage, you know you're on the right track!
Style: The biggest struggle of the story was honestly the style because the voice tends to shift in unsuspected areas. Dialogue style is consistent, but other areas not so much. It isn't something that throws me off the track, but something noticeable enough. Nothing a good read through can't fix for sure!
Story: Interesting premise. I'm a big fan of light novels and this is ticking all of the boxes down to reactions of the characters and ambiance of the space they are in. However, my tip is to have the character weave into the story a bit more, and make it seem like they aren't just on the surface of their own world. More on that later.
Characters: The later is now lol. So the characters aren't cookie cutters but I was also expecting some emph in their personalities. Not a lot jumped up at me right away, and I expect that to change as the story grows. It is hard not to write in stereotypes (as I find myself slipping into that box as well) but adding nuances to characters make them seem more relatable.
Overall: Overall a 5 for me. There are bits and aspects that I see are premises for something better, and other areas that could become better. A bit of TLC can go a long way :) - longwindedone1Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0This review is through chapter 14 of the story "Overpowers: Life is Magical." There will likely be spoilers in this review. For that, I apologize.
Story:
This story follows Nozomi, a high school girl who becomes the magical Guardian Taurus. With the help of a talking dog, and her best friend, she uses her new powers to fight darkspawn creatures. This is not normally my kind of story, but I got sucked in very quickly. It has elements of anime, which I know is generally very popular, but I am not very versed with these kinds of elements.
Style:
This story is told from the third person limited point of view, and is mostly told from who I consider to be the main character, Nozomi. However, there are parts of the story that focus on her fiend's point of view and even some that focus on the teacher/Life's point of view. I found this style of writing new and fresh (partly because of the skill of the author and partly because it is new(ish) to me). I definitely felt like I was reading something non-western. Having a female MC was also refreshing.
Grammar:
I listened to this book on my commute and when I was swimming with the Royal Road app. I don't want to pretend that I got eyes on each word with an editor's eye. That said, the story read very well, with no parts that took me out of the story. I enjoyed it immensely, and wished that a real narrator could be reading it to me (instead of an AI voice).
Characters:
Okay, so most of the story, through chapter 14, is about Nozomi, Yoshino (the friend), Seiza (the talking dog), and Shinto Seikatsu (Life). Near the end of my reading, Yoshino's mother enters the story. She is definitely up to no good, doing dark rituals and such. Her place in the story will definitely continue.
Overall, this story was awesome, and if I liked it, people that are really into anime will drool all over it. I recommend this for all kinds of readers. 5/5 - DestroyatronMk8Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0This starts out as a bog standard Magical Girl story. You don't find out until the first fight that it's much more than that. I don't want to spoil anything, but I will say it's a slow burn. You won't start to see what's really going on until chapter 12 or so. It's good stuff.
STYLE: The dialogue reads exactly like what you would see in the subtitles of an anime. It might seem clunky at first, but it's actually a neat bit of worldbuilding for a Magical Girl story set in Japan. The descriptions are solid, and the action is clear and well choreographed. This author really knows what they're about.
STORY: The story is slow, but solid. Hints of worldbuilding are dropped here and there that imply there is much, much more going on than what we can see. The rules of the world make sense, and they're a lot more realistic than I expected. The plot is character driven, with none of the coincidence or contrivance so many writers rely on. The story keeps a mostly light tone, but goes very dark very fast in places, and the stakes feel very real.
CHARACTERS: The characters start out as more Tropes than people. The MC is a clumsy, perpetually late airhead. Her best friend is a responsible worrywart. Her secret protector is Super Cool and Super Mysterious. Nearly every character is a trope, from the strict teacher to the magical support puppy. Just like the dialogue, this looks like poor writing at first, but it's actually a genius move. Bit by bit, every character is revealed to be a real person with real motivations, and far deeper than their initial portrayal. The characters also noticeably grow and change as the story goes on. It's very well done.
GRAMMAR: No errors that I could see.
OVERALL: This is an excellent series, very worth your time. It's got a lot of great moments, and the narrative really pulls you in. Five stars all around. - L.R. Monroe (Emrys)Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0The characters in this story are really interesting, all with their own personalities that come through the page. I am particularly interested in the character of Life that actually seems to be the manifestation of life itself. In addition, Death also exists in the same way.
The dialogue is distinct. Each character having their own unique voice.
There are a few main characters, which I think readers will appreciate.
No grammar issues. The author makes a real effort to go back and edit chapters for quality and it shows. If there are any, the author fixes them fast and I didn't notice.
The style feels like an anime put to pen, and if you like a light read with anime like characters, this is the story for you. It really does feel like the author nailed that feeling.
The story itself isn't bad, starts to get into motion around chapter 8 or so. The mystery surrounding Life really keeps you hooked into the story.
Overall this story isn't bad. It's an interesting urban fantasy world. You absolutely feel like this is an anime in written form. All it's missing in the great musical opening.
If you're looking for that unique urban fantasy anime fix with mysterious characters and a bit of a slow burn, this story is for you. - Merlin PendragonRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Read it. The subject, magical girls, was at first off putting for me. That was until I read it. This fiction is well written, engaging, and more broad than it would at first appear. If you find yourself on the fence about this series I would say, “go for it!”
Style - The physical style, how it is presented, is curated for this medium. The short paragraphs make it easy to read and clear. The writing style is concise and to the point, aiding the story. I believe the author described it best, “when I'm writing I'm kind of playing a weird rhythm game where I have to time my ‘Detailed writing’ at the right moment…” – Moawar.
Story - The story is engaging right from the off. I don’t wish to spoil anything but we follow several characters and I find the switches to be, on the whole, well timed and additive to the story. This isn’t your typical Magical Girl story - at least I’m assuming from context, I haven’t actually watched or read any Magical Girl things before - there is blood and trauma, but also cute puppies.
Grammar - It’s clear that a lot of work has been put into these chapters and it shows. I believe I only noticed one or two redundant words in the first couple of chapters; besides that? Nothing that I could see.
Character - The characters are easy to grasp right away. While there is some similarity between Nozomi and Yoshino, all the others are clearly defined. That said I see the need for a best friend pair, and best friends are often quite similar. Thus far, Life appears the most compelling character and, I would wager, has the best thought out background.
In conclusion, read it. Whatever your misconceptions about such a series may be, I urge you to look past them and give this one a shot. The concise style, compelling story, impeccable grammar and compelling characters make this a must read.
