This was recommended to me by a friend who called it “intense” and “memorable” and it certainly did not disappoint in that regard.
Chapter 2 will probably live rent-free in my mind for a long time. (Looking at the other reviews, I do not think I’m the only one who felt that way.)
This fiction is not for everybody, but if you want something in-your-face, or even “slap your face and wake you up”, try this.
It begins with a mystery as we see our hero, Blake, trying to build a better lawn mower.  Blake is not the best inventor, but he is trying.  In his struggle,  a voice appears to remind him of his failings.
Soon the voice  has dragged him into a trip down memory lane.  Then into a dungeon of cartoonish nightmares.  The dungeon is pleasant compared to the memories.
Is it a chance at redemption and growth for Blake, or an ordeal to be survived?
    Or both?
I’m still trying to figure that out.  We do see Blake progressing.  He grows in confidence and skill.
Tormenting him along the way is Elmo.  Elmo is the AI personality controlling the dungeon, and he is a psychopath. I want to strangle Elmo.  I think that is what the writer intends. The Ministry in A Clockwork Orange is public service oriented compared to Elmo.
Style:  Very intense, very direct. Makes good use of sarcasm for commentary.
Story:  Very much in the LitRPG tradition, with unique elements.
Grammar: No problems.  Guy knows how to write.
Characters:   There are two major characters, Blake (the hero) and the torturous AI Elmo, who may be the enemy or may be helping.  Each has a strong voice and is fully developed.

This one is a slow burn, and my main comment to @JRInkwrite would echo what @Theestimator mentioned. The pacing starts off quite measured, but the story gradually picks up momentum. While it takes a bit of patience to get through the initial setup, the author does finally hit their stride by chapters 4 and 5. At that point, the plot becomes much more engaging, and the characters start to come into their own. It’s getting pretty good, and I’m definitely interested in keeping up with it to see where it goes next.

Ok, so the author says it's his first book.  He's a little verbose and the first chapter was kind of slow, but that second chapter has pure HELL.  It takes a twisted mind to come up with something like that.  Makes me wonder if there is some truth behind it.
I'm hooked now and will be looking forward to the next chapter.
