Description

The end of the world had come and gone, and none bothered to tell them.

Centuries after a meteor impact deploys a strange material into Earth’s atmosphere, slowly reducing the lifespan of  all living organisms, a group of people leave their sheltered underwater city with a cure.

But we needed no cure, as we mastered the mysterious dust, using it to power our daily lives, accepting that all life will slowly die in exchange of such power.

To cure this dying Earth, they’d have to become an enemy of it.

Disclaimer: this review is based off of everything that I've read so far, up through the end of Chapter 5. Do with that information as you will.
So, I've got a decent bit to say about Once We Were. For the most part, it's pretty good stuff - all my section ratings are three stars or up, after all, which means even the places I'm going to mention that were rough were not truly TERRIBLE, and there's a lot to love here as well.
Let's get into the nitty gritty.
Style: So, the first thing I'll say here is that, most of the issues I have with the author's stylistic choices have to do with anchoring the reader in the midst of chaotic events or jumping from thing to thing pretty quickly. In terms of the author's tone and narrative ability, I've really enjoyed reading this fiction.
There are some things, however, that have pulled me from the story while reading. There are times where I feel like events are just happening and I'm struggling to keep up with the shifting of events - like I don't really have an anchor to hold onto for the events? (Slight spoiler.) I had a really hard time keeping up with who was who during the fight with the serpent on the boat, as an example. It felt like a whirlwind in my brain.
I'll say this here and likely say it again in the grammar section - this could do with a round of edits, I think, which would really polish the fic overall and elevate the style to a level that matches the story and character depth.
Story: This is by far the author's strong point, and is the reason I couldn't bring myself to stop reading despite the technical issues I came across or the pacing or 'unanchored' sequences from the style section. I am beyond intrigued by not just the basic idea of this story but also the way the plot is unfolding around that idea. I love a really good, hardcore sci-fi book and that's what this evokes for me. I think that the strength of the story alone is enough for me to recommend this book to others.
Grammar: Okay, so here in the grammar
