Second, it’s kind of interesting how dark and light play off of each other in this work. There’s action and adventure as well as this kind of larger picture question of which side to be on when one does you dirty. I enjoyed the writing. The dialogue feels natural and there’s a flow to things that takes you inside the main character’s conflicted head. Well done to the author.
The world has a real element of magic and seems like it will only be further fleshed out as the chapters continue. I enjoyed exploring it with the main character. I really like where it’s going.
I didn’t notice anything grammatically that kept me from enjoying as I read along. There are some really stellar sentences at the start and stop of some of the chapters that just made me go ‘wow, okay, that’s brilliant’, so I really appreciated that and found those chapters, especially, hooked me into the flow of the story.
…This one’s an interesting niche read. Dive in there and enjoy if you’re on the fence! I followed and favorited! - Elliot MoorsRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5Once a Hero, Now a Villain is a superhero gamelit that has both dark and light-hearted elements. The story deals with a nice hero/villain dichotomy, with an MC who's fed up with the whole hero gig after seeing the darker side of it, and is looking to reinvent herself.
The story keeps a steady pace, with a good amount of action. There are some good descriptions and similes used that help bring up the prose. The part I've enjoyed the most so far is the dialogue and character work, with some endearing banter between the MC and other side characters.
The story also describes the game elements in detail and weaves in good depth. I thought some of the abilities specifically had unique twists to them. As well, the class system and the way leveling is done I think has the potential to be quite interesting as the story gets further along.
The grammar is good, and the story is easy to read, with competent paragraphing and chapter layout. I spotted a few mistakes here and there, but nothing jarring that will take you out of the story and mostly stuff that could be fixed with just a cursory edit.
Overall, you should give this story a shot if you're into gamelit/LitRPG, especially ones of the superhero subgenre.
