On the Concept of Demons

Kathmin is a cultural anthropologist studying the similarities in the ideas of a demon among member races of the Galactic Union.  His paper,“Folkloric Phantasma: A Study of the Inter-Species Similarities on the Concept of Demons," earns him an invitation to present at the Annual Galactic Scientific Forum.  No one takes him seriously.  But when these demons appear, and his assertion that these monsters were a precursor society is validated, his life is upended as he joins the first contact team to meet them.  But who are they?  Where did they come from?  And why is a professor who spent his life studying the dead cultures and their monsters now at the center of the mystery?
