Description

(Book 3 Oathmaker has begun. Life has gone crazy lately so no regular posting schedule.)

It has been an age of peace between the Holy Paladin Order and the Mage Alliance, nearly five hundred years since the last major war on Contenmere, smallest continent on the world of Reath. But the peace remains an uneasy one even now.

When the Lord Protector Lutan pursues an old grudge and an entire village winds up dead as a consequence, it looks like a return to open warfare is inevitable unless he can stop the necromancer he’s hunting from reaching the safety of his own people, however, this is not his story.

. . . Alec had lived a very quiet life in the village of Respite, seeing little in his future other than collecting the valuable deadwood of the ancient, magical and above all, deadly Forest Von Mori.

But, now as the sole survivor of his village, and captive of that same necromancer, things are not only different but, more disconcerting than the glaringly obvious, something doesn’t seem right; why is the necromancer so determined to protect him? And just what principles is Alec prepared to forsake to survive . . .

It's professional work and it shows. The author is gifting us with a complete book, already published and edited, chapter by chapter for free on Royal Road. This means that, as expected, the prose it above all standards here, the storytelling and pacing are just right, the characters are fleshed out, the world is solid and the dialogue poignant. Beyond that, it is also clear that the author has substance, for all the themes and philosophy talked about in the book are relevant, well prhased by all the characters speaking (and well in character too!) and it strikes a nerve.
The younger mc is kind of very mature for his age, but it saves us a lot of trouble that might take away from the story. Erebus is mature, compassionate and very interesting for the choice of class. The ghost is funny as heck. The dryad is luckily not a love interest. Character-wise, very solid.
The prose I have already praised above, and it delivers what it needs and beyond. Sometimes it might come across as verbose, and senteces are long. However, I am italian and my first language makes this prose sound natural and very easy. For an English speaker it might be different, but I can't know. I liked it, and that's that.
The world building, on par with everything else, is excellent. Deep and thought out, with many elements of mystery that will come back later for sure.
The dialogue is intense, to the point, and all the characters behave as they should. There is the occasional development, and it's good to see, but as far as the early chapters go only the young two characters can really experince any development. There is conflict brewing, though, which will be very nice once developed.
Grammar is perfect. It's a released book, and it shows.
    Good read ^^

I have enjoyed reading this a lot thus far.
There’s always a place in my reading list for a story where the bad guy decides murdering the last survivor of an atrocity is just a little bit beyond their moral compass. And, hey, here is one of them!
Story and characters - the characters are probably the stand out strong feature of this piece at the moment. There’s a small group of figures that are being explored and they are all being well fleshed out. Their interactions are a lot of fun and the author spends a good amount of time making sure we can understand their different approaches. The story is strong too - I’m enjoying the quest that has begun here and can see that there is plenty more being developed. There is good world building here and a real sense that thought has been put into how things develops.
Grammar and style - the author is clear very open to advice and has conducted a thorough proofread. This means that some of the commentary on the piece below the line seems quite of date to me. I did not notice much wrong here that pulled me out my enjoyment of the writing. And the style is well handled - very much meaning into the genre tropes without feeling too familiar or cliched. As mentioned at the start, this is an enjoyable read.
Overall, one to read and follow. There’s clearly a world here that is worth exploring further,

Gives me major Shinobu/Araragi vibes. I wanna see where the two mains go.
Style: Is a little complicated. I think many people will like it, since it's the type of prose that makes people feel smarter just by reading it. It's indulgent and flowery, but the half a star off is because sometimes it does this to a fault at times. This may just be personal preference, though. Still good.
Grammar: is strong for the most part, but there were noticable titbits here and there. Nothing egregious, but definitely stuff that could be cleaned up after a second round.
Story: is really interesting. The first few chapters really take a while to get going, as it's taking its time to set stuff up, but I honestly don't mind it. I think it's intelligent in its storytelling and it's creating tension by namedropping stuff now. Chekhov's gun style.
Character: is pretty good. Although Holly and Alec are still kids, they do exhibit potential to grow together, but I do like the role Erebus is taking on now and how he's taking it. It's interesting, almost like someone who was forced into the mentor role too early. It's interesting.
Overall: if Von Mori is anything like the dryad from Terraria I am going straight into that forest-

The book is good, I am waiting for updates and have high hopes for it. If you are looking for a fantasy story with decent wieght to it you can read this one and be satisfied.
    Style:
The story is unique, in almost every way. A new world. new rules, new wars, new everthing. It's a good ol' fantasy story. Liches, necromancers, paladins, and druids/driads. The chapters are decently long and fulfill the itch you have when you get a 'new update' pop up. 5/5
    Story:
The story is entertaining enough that I didn't find myself putting it down until I was finished. 5/5
    Grammar:
No spelling mistakes, no capitalization errors or anything else. The book has been proof read and double checked, 5/5.
    Character:
The characters feel alive, and are each unique enough that I don't get them confused. 5/5 I look forward to more of each of them.

Overall the story is just beginning, and I am happy it's being uploaded here. I enjoyed it, and look forward to more in the future. 5/5 for all the scores, bookmarked and saved.
I enjoy the twist where the necromancers and paladins have a form of peace, its rare in stories where 'evil' magic isn't a death sentence for everyone involved.
I look forward to your future works!

Fabulous first novel by an inspiring new author
So pleased I found royal road as probably wouldn't have then gone on to purchase book from Amazon.
I was drawn in from the first chapter, had it in my Amazon basket by chapter 2, purchased by chapter 3. Can't wait for book 2!

I have read a lot of books in the fantasy genre, but this one stands out from the rest. The world that the author has created is wholly unique, complete with its own rules, wars, and inhabitants. From liches and necromancers to paladins and druids, every character in the book is distinct and memorable, breathing life into the story.
The pacing of the book is just right, with chapters that are a decent length and always leave you wanting more. As soon as the 'new update' notification pops up, you'll find yourself eagerly diving into the latest chapter, always looking forward to what's next. The story itself is captivating, so much so that I found myself unable to put it down until I had reached the very end.
One of the standout features of the book is the impeccable grammar. It is clear that the book has been thoroughly proofread and checked, as there are no spelling or capitalization errors to be found. This attention to detail is a testament to the author's dedication to crafting a polished and professional work.
However, what really sets this book apart are the characters. They are so vividly portrayed that they truly come alive on the page. Each character is unique, with their own distinct personality and motivations. I found myself invested in their stories, rooting for some and sympathizing with others.
Overall, I can confidently say that this book is an excellent addition to the fantasy genre. It offers a fresh take on classic elements, and is so well-crafted that it will leave you eagerly awaiting the next update. If you're in search of a captivating fantasy story with rich characters, then this book is a must-read. Also great job author, you have created a great novel.

The author's writing style is truly one-of-a-kind, weaving a captivating fantasy tale that will leave readers hooked from beginning to end. Despite a few minor areas that could use editing, the beauty and creativity of the prose make it well worth the read.
    Story:
This story is a shining example of how classical fantasy elements can be transformed into something entirely fresh and unique. While the plot initially appears familiar, it quickly takes a captivating turn that will keep readers guessing until the very end. The author's skillful storytelling and imaginative world-building make for an enthralling read.
    Grammar:
The author's attention to detail and careful proofreading have resulted in a flawless piece of writing, with no errors in spelling or capitalization. The mastery of the language is evident on every page, making for a smooth and effortless reading experience.
    Characters:
The characters in this novel are nothing short of extraordinary. Each one is richly developed and uniquely distinct, with personalities that are both realistic and captivating. It's clear that the author has put a great deal of thought into crafting these individuals, making them feel like genuine people rather than mere plot devices.
Overall, this story is a true gem in the world of fantasy literature. With themes that explore the complexities of power and its use, the story takes readers on an epic journey filled with intrigue, action, and surprises. I highly recommend this book to all fans of the genre. It's a definite 5/5 in all categories!

This book is a refreshing take on the old Paladins vs Necromancers trope. All the main character wants to do is live quietly and do his nercromancery things. Unfortunately a renegade paladin has got it into his head that this would be a Bad Thing and he is willing to stop at nothing to stop him.
With his companions, an orphaned boy and a really pissed-off holly bush, they flee for their lives but they can only flee so far.
The characters are likable, the baddies are properly bad and the story runs along at a decent clip. Don't judge this book by the prologue.

Overall: A delightful read with the right mix of melodrama, casual bantering of powerful beings, and lighthearted youthful nievity primed to ask questions and contimplate truths.  I'm generally a fan of the dissonance that arrises from conflicting elements, a child expousing the wisdom of age, an evil necromancer with a kind heart, excetera.
Style: This may just be personal preferance, but I will still name it a flaw.  Namely that you tend to lean too heavily at times into figures of speech and writing techniques at times.  Most of the time it's nice and flavourful, but at times it can cross into consusing and convoluted.  This bleeds into grammar so I'll addesss it there.  4.5/5
Story: A world inspired by tropes, but spun from an angle that is more often seen by RPG players than readers.  I'd say the author did a nice job of bringing it to life and having the setting actually speak for itself rather than just be described in dusty tombs.  Good fantasy elements, passing regularly from philisophical discussion to plot progression and back lending it a decent sense of pacing.  4.5/5
Grammar: ok, you have good understanding of the english language and general competence in word choice and spelling, for people writing in their native language this is often a free 5/5 for me, but I do try to keep it a learning experiance.  After all competence in a language is far from mastery, and most of us struggle enough with competency alone.  Lets take an example and rip it apart.
"Normally people would be about their daily business already, not the loud bustle of life in full flow, but those early risers who by habit or occupation wore dawn as a cloak as they did those small tasks that needed doing before the real work of the day could begin, the contrast was a dagger in the kidneys to that terribly calm and unseen gaze."
Bit of a run on, sure, we all do it, easy to spot the poetic intent behind it too with the built in contrast, which is probably why it slipped through your editi

Oathbound drops the reader right into the middle of a tragedy, then slowly reveals the circumstances and plot from there. The build up is quick, and even the most powerful are vulnerable and not all knowing.
I was admittedly hesitant to start this, as I personally feel that RR is overflowing with stories where the dark evil character is actually the good guy, OtSoO is completely different. It's just so natural, and the change doesn't feel like a feature at all. It's very immersive and I quickly felt myself feeling a little guilty for my initial assumptions.
The style is vivid, leaving the reading right in the scene. Parts of the story, such as chases, are tense and almost breathless, while others, such as discussions or teaching moments, slow right down and go into detail.
Grammer is fluent and flows well.
The story has been good so far, and I've definitely enjoyed it. I do want to wait until more has been posted before trying to go into detail, but what has been posted so far is captivating and I'll certainly be continuing.
The characters have been great, but it would be awesome to find out a bit more. Nothing feels missing, and everything matches the story, it would just be good to get a deeper understanding of some characters.
Overall this is a very enjoyable read, and is intersting enough to keep you up at night and staring at a glowing screen!
