I suppose I know the answer to that question (and you probably do to), but I'm still delighted and amazed by the great selection that's out there.
This particular work is rather a bit gritty, but you can see the delightfully warm and hopeful poke-world we all know and love there beneath the surface, just waiting to be chiseled out by the magnificent Sammy Oak.
This has everything you could ever hope for in a pokemon story, and if game freak wanted to make an "expanded universe" star wars style (which I sincerely hope they do not), this is shaping up to be the kind of story that would almost make it worth it.
I almost gave this gem a pass when I first saw it, but I ran out of stuff to read at work and decided to give it a try, and I've never been happier to be threatened with boredom :D

Very interesting opening chapters, loving the idea of released war vet pokemon being such a problem. I'm also looking forward to seeing how Oak's outlook on the necessity of violence in certain situations evolves. There's a good bit of potential here that I'm looking forward to being explored, and I've got to add props for including Oak's legendary line in such a fun way.

Fanfictions that take place during the past of a main work are usually stuck with the limits of pre-established events and risk a sort of stale rehashing of the younger characters' history and personalities as they perform a story the audience already knows the ending to.
This author has chosen the difficult task of staying true to the origins of the pokemon adventures we know and love while breathing in new life to the older supporting cast's backstories. They did a fantastic job and created something new without losing the feelings of nostalgia nor sense of anticipation for what comes next. There's comfort from slice of life, the excitement of adventure, tension drawn from conflict, warmth of compassion, gut punching tragedies, intriguing insights, and more. All of it tempered with the severity of reality as people and pokemon both deal with occasional life and death struggles that seem so natural in that world.
Whether it's style, story, grammar, or characters, each of them are written in a way that leaves little want for more, but how it all comes together to give a 'greater than the sum of its parts' reading experience is where Oak: Origins really shines.
I didn't start reading with any great expectations, it even felt a bit plain at first, but reading more than a few chapters shows the author has woven their soul through the events and characters alike. I like it a lot and hope you will too.

The Only professor oak fanfic  I've seen and it's doing a pretty good job I think of portraying his character as a kid so far. Overall it's pretty good pokemon fanfiction definitely one of the better ones on here. I'm gonna be following this one. Hopefully this level of quality continues.
