- BalerikRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0It is a rare treat to find a story that is truly thought provoking. Most stories here delve no deeper than where to allocate stat points or who should join the harem. To be fair, there's nothing wrong with that. We read to be entertained. But what if a story dared to address far more relevant issues? This is the question Denwa Macska tackles with Noirceur.
Style - Denwa Macska presents a dark, brooding narrative that relies heavily on atmospheric and psychological impact. The author uses evocative language the way an painter chooses color. Splashed across the pages of the story, we have flowing sentence structure that draws the reader inexorably into the sinister world of this grimdark fantasy.
Story - I do not use the term 'grimdark' lightly. From the opening story beats, Noiceur presents an oppressive mood that weighs on the audience like a lead blanket. The suffocating prose adds to the feeling of exisential crisis when we find ourselves being introduced to Salia, the story's protagonist. We follow her from one dire encounter to the next, each one revealing more of our heroine's thoughts and desires. This becomes a recurring theme as the story develops further, giving the audience a window not only into the world Denwa Macska creates, but into the minds of the characters that populate it.
Character - As impressive as the story is, Salia, our protagonist, is the star of the show. And for good reason. Faced with insurmountable challenges, she rails against the inevitable and refuses to go quietly into the night. Her determination quickly becomes the driving force behind the narrative and a primary reason for the audience to be invested in the story as it unfolds.
Grammar - I saw nothing that significantly reduced readability.
Overall - There is a depth to Denwa Macska's Noirceur that one rarely finds on Royal Road. At a glance, we have a story about a young woman that refuses to have her life manipulated by the whims of others. That, in itself, is c - JacksonWritesRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This is a fairly early review in the story, though at the moment it's caught up to everything released. Noirceur at the point I'm at has an almost mythology-like foundation that it's building on, but the actual beats and trajectory of the story is no further along than the blurb at the front. We've been setting the scene.
Based on the quality of the scene setting, I want to see where everything goes, and the quality / execution of everything so far garners a lot of good will with me.
Story & Character - Combined because Story is mentioned in my summary. In terms of set up and balance for the opening, the characters are well managed and the groundwork laid is wonderful as long as you're not too squeamish about dark fantasy. Specifically 'hopeless' fantasy as opposed to hyperviolence that cosplays as dark fantasy on the weekends.
The only reason we're missing the half star here (And it's not enough to tip the overall rating on the scales) is that, frankly we haven't seen a ton of where the story is going and that's lead to main protagonist who has, essentially, expressed a single emotion through the entire story interspliced with some confusion. This is mostly because the opening 5 chapters include a 2 chapter flashback, so time to get overly deep is pretty sparce. That said, everything on the surface, from well written character dialogue to gorgeous descriptions, stands tall.
The Style is what stands out the most to me. Macska has a tone and locked it in quickly. As I mentioned above, parts of the story read like a mythology, with characters speaking in a way that matches, following the internal laws of the world Macska created to ensure it flows well.
I desperately want to see more of the story, the foundation here is powerful and if it delivers on all that promise while adding ideas of the same quality we're in for a downright epic fantasy. - LunaSeaRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Really enjoying this story because of the darkness it showcases without being melodramatic. Instead, each chapter just leaves you wanting more.
Style
Fast paced without forsaking world building, the way the dialogue and descriptions are written tempt you to keep reading so you can continue discovering more about the world in Noirceur.
Story
Absolutely fascinating! We open with Salia and the start of her journey, while the author introduces two more characters and hints of grand schemes that lead to such a dark present (with promises of a better future perhaps?). Though situations may seem bleak, the strength of the story lies in making the reader want to know: why are things the way they are, will it ever get better? To me that just proves the story is well-written.
Grammar
I didn't spot a single error while reading.
Character
Another strength of the author's. We're introduced to three very unique individuals quickly, and we immediately begin to root for them as well as want to understand them better.
Overall
I'm invested in Salia's journey, as well as the way the future will unfold for everyone in the world of Noirceur. I'd suggest you get on board too - you won't regret it. - Raj Ch, AuthorRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0The darkness usually irks me, and I only read dark stories on certain occasions. However, I was in the mood for something dark and decided to check this one out. I must say, this is a really dark story that strikes the right balance. Writing such stories can easily become ridiculous, but the author is talented enough not to make it cringe-worthy. The story is very engaging, and you can feel the bleakness setting in, making you wonder where the story is going.
From the start, I was very interested and kept wondering about the reasons behind this and that. Yes, it's a very engaging story that keeps you guessing. The fact that it's a slow burn didn't bother me much because it's that engaging!
As for grammatical errors there are none that I noticed. The author had cleaned up the chapters pretty well.
The characters are amazing and feel three-dimensional and very real. If you want a dark and mature storyline that doesn't pull punches and has great characters, this one is for you. It is rare to find something that is so good! I heard the author is finishing up soon, so do not wait and get into it! - keeganashleyliveRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0...This one is dark. I don't mean shadowy along the edges or cobwebs in the corners; I mean really, epically grim in an at-the-core way---the whole freaking haunted house. Everything about it is twisted in a good way? Can I say that? I'm not usually a fan of reading works this dark, but it, somehow, got its icy fingers on me and wouldn't let go.
And the characters are deep, muli-leveled and emotional---no two dimensional here! The author takes the time to dive deep, and I feel it really pays off. You feel their pain, their development and the dark underlying need for revenge and vengeance boiling right under the surface. It's intense and tangible in a heartbreaking and heavy way.
The writing is very well done; I didn't see any glaring grammar errors or anything that hindered my reading experience. In fact, the flow of the descriptions and such actually ADDED to the reading experience. Kudos to the author for a job well done.
In sum, if you like pitch-black with amazing character development, this is your pot of tea. ...But, be warned, it's boiled black with no sugar. And, somehow, that really really works for it. Well done.
