As you might have guessed, it's horror/grimdark.  However, since since it's on the nose horror it's not annoying, but instead cute, and still a bit angsty.
I think this story could have become a thicker fuller read if they twisted things a little differently, but it's still a good short read on its own.

Well written, the story just flows and is a pleasure to read. Dave is such a nice character, I rooted for him from the first page. Sometime during the middle part you start to get a little suspicious that all the happenings might be too good to be true.  However, it simply could be a nice story about an underdog succeeding to get the better life he deserves. But, is it? Or will there be an unforessen twist?

I really liked this short story! I found myself rooting for the MC throughout, and though I thought one character's actions were a little unnatural, but there turned out to be a good reason for them, which was very satisfying.
My only complaint is that some of the backstory wasn't so engaging.
Overall, definitely worth the read. And though I know this is just meant to be a short story, I'd be keen to read some more about Dave.
Best wishes to the author, keep up the good work.

This was a good read! I really liked the world-building around it even if the story was short. I'd love to read more stories in that world that talk about the politics and different perspectives. I felt the pace changing throughout the story which threw me off a little, but it was a good read nonetheless. There were some minor typos here and there, like 'Easter Empire', but high-quality writing nonetheless!

The plot/story was amazing. The twist was scary but done well. 5/5
The grammar was immaculate. I haven't read a published book in so long I forgot how good their grammar can be. This was on that level. It is done in a more conventional/formal writing style used by published novels compared to RR's lax style. 5/5
The grammar made the style of the story reminiscent of a published fantasy novel. The plot as well was reminiscent of one until the twist. The world had great worldbuilding for how short the story was, although there are so many questions left unanswered (which isn't a bad thing, but now I'll be thinking about them all day). The style felt a bit generic but in a classic way. No complaints. 4/5
The characters that were not the protagonist did not have much time to shine due to the length of the story. Despite that, they did what they needed to. The first villian (the dean) was cliche but he accomplished what was needed perfectly, as well as fitting into the classic/generic style of the book which made the twist even more surprising. The inscriptionist who supported the protagonist was also the cliche good guy, but again, did what he needed to. I liked the story of the orphan who became a soldier since it showed a nice contrast with Dave and highlighted his patience. The true antagonist was pretty cliche in the fact that she was evil but again, it fit with the story. I feel like in a longer story this wouldn't work unless they were fleshed out more but in a short story it is perfectly fine.
    Overall 4/5. Still amazing.

The story is well written. However, the tags don't fit the story, at least not for the end. It lacks a horror one or something similar. I've read, that there will be a compilation of short stories soon. I hope the MC has better luck soon. His ending was sad enough.

I was expecting a short story with some comedy and some horror. There was no comedy, there was only a rug pull.
The story itself is written well, with no grammar or spelling issues, but that's not why this is a 0.5-star review.
This is a poor review only because there is a comedy tag and absolutely zero comedy. If this wasn't described as a comedy, I'd happily leave a 5-star review for a brilliant, short, horror story.
