Night Court

Description

Archy has been hunting night creatures for a while. He's been operating as judge, jury, and executioner. Unfortunately, said night creatures are not happy about this, and they are about to make it known... in court. Archie is about to get the full criminal justice system experience. First a detective that should understand using excessive force on someone who can fight back isn't a bright idea, then there's a swat team that should've probably announced themselves, if they didn't want to get lit on fire. He also gets an incompetent public defender and a prosecutor more intent on making a deal than a case. Apparently ignorance of the law (and that the court even exists) is not a defense.  It's not all bad though. He's going to get a speedy trial.__________________________________________________________

*** Novelette*** 13,000 wordsThis is a short story exploring ideas of what would happen if a vampire hunter happened to run into a court system that was supposed to take care of vampires that kill humans. That and when I learned burning thermite and magnesium generate UV light I wanted to write someone using it. Some descriptions of violence that are about 100 words or less. The beginning of this was a bit unexpected. I had figured this would be a bit different and follow a courtroom drama part, instead we get a violent and dark opening that leans into a comedy with some dark undertones. The prose and grammar are great and the characters are developed enough to carry it well. The story is the best part and makes this a great short story for those who like a gritty supernatural base mixed with equal parts comedy. The court scenes are not boring and it really is central to the reveal and the conclusion. Hard not to spoil it, but there is a fair amount of vampire-related comedy to balance the brutality.

WOW   an emotional rollercoaster that that makes you want too laugh and rage in so few chapters. Keep it up I don’t care if it’s a long series just make sure you give us a good ending. Don’t let it die half finished.

Short but good. I love the court aspect, would be nice to see some more exploration into the dark side of things, but it would definitely require balancing the new found powers with the challenges Archy faces.
    Story:
Over all solid, reminds a bit of John Conroe, Jim Butcher, and a few others. Would love some more world building and exploration of the lore. Even if it devolves a little into a minter of the week, I think there is a lot of potential and few stories have the court aspects, which I think is a cool addition and brings the story up above just vigilante justice or mindless prog fantasy. It does feel a bit abrupt at times but I think that comes from the novella form. I would love a longer form with weekly or bi-weekly posts to really flesh everything out both story wise and plot wise.
    Character:
Archy is solid, clearly dealing with his own trauma, would love to see more backstory on Elijah, Lucas and Gabby. Definitely some potential either as a semi-buddy cop story with Gabby or continuing as a loner/outside consultant ala Harry Dresden, Nate temple, or Nathan garret. I think there’s a lot of possibility for growth and lore here.
Author: good balance of humor and darkness which can be hard to do. It’s easy too fall down the pure grim dark hole or the callous MC path. Was definitely a fan of the use of ear worm songs against a telepath.
Definitely does their research, which is good when it comes to the court aspect even if it’s abridged.
I look forward to the sequel and hope we get to explore more of Aechy’s past and future hunts.

Nice story with a BUNCH of references and pretty damn enjoyable. There are some grammar issues but they don’t really affect the plot; no one writes perfectly, at least no one I know. But there are some missing periods, some simple abbreviation issues like “I’d” instead of “I’ve”, but anyone with a functional brain can understand that.
It’s a nice courtroom experience — even though I’m not a biiiig fan of those — with an unusual theme, but it’s good after all.
The Bohemian Rhapsody singing was crazy, and the MC is pretty good too. Plus, the comedy is actually funny (pretty ironic to say, but hard to do)
