Description

What happens the dayafterthe world ends? Well, it just keeps on turning, same as before. After all, a piddly little alien invasion is no excuse to give up on good food and better conversation.

This is a story about a restaurant in the ruins of New York, and the humans and aliens who pass through it:A human chef de cuisine looking for a reason to pick himself back up the day after an alien invasion flattened his hometown.A crocodilian huntress looking for insight from the newest pack predators on the galactic stage.A prickly cidery heiress looking for a new culture to join after her whole worldview got turned upside-down.A marsupial housewife looking for a new homeworld on which to start a family. And an old ovine soldier looking for a reason to keep on living.

Hopefully, they'll all find what they're looking for.

It's a fun time. A lot of talk about food and cooking, a lot of mostly interesting psychological and philosophical exploration, characters with big and authentic feeling emotions, and cute aliens. Yay!
I've already read this story multiple times back when it was just on Reddit, but I gave it another go through over the past few days. Still great- better than ever with the new prologue chapters, short though they are.
Still, a new reader should note: This isn't really one story. The first prologue and 16 chapters are one story, and then everything after is basically a new one.
Maybe that's a bit hyperbolic, characters and events do carry over- but notably our POV character mostly doesn't. Be prepared to leave Sifal behind- her tale is continued in "New Years of Conquest", which doesn't seem to have been posted to this site yet- and swap over to someone new.
The two arcs are similar, but the tone is quite different. I personally prefer the first arc- lots of "wham lines", constant lavish descriptions of gourmet food, high stakes- arc two tones these elements down a bit, and is overall much slower and lower-stakes. It's still great, I'm just saying, be prepared.
Furthermore, the story is now starting it's third arc. Hard to say how the paradigm will shift this time, but I'm excited to see how it plays out.

This story explores many aspects of ethics, psychology, culinary arts and more. The protagonists confronting their prejudice and opening up to each other, in turn learning and experiencing the culture of the others. Pacing of the story is done well, never being a boring slog or glossing over aspects unnecessarily.

Several months ago, Earth made first contact with aliens. Unfortunately, our physiology and diet resulted in most of the galactic federation viewing us as monsters...
This story begins shortly after the bombing of Earth. New York City has been largely destroyed; however, a few buildings here and there happened to survive. One building that remains amidst the rubble is The Cropsey Carnival - a fancy restaurant run by David, a passionate and somewhat famous chef.
The story follows David's encounter with several aliens who have come to Earth for different reasons. David is not one to mince words (he's too busy mincing tastier things). He has some rather frank discussions with these aliens and manages to upend their current worldview.
The writing and plot is engaging. I love these characters! The dialogue and inner monologue are fantastic.
I've been reading this on Reddit (HFY) - it's nice to be able to read this in a better app.
    I highly recommend this!
