Description
Shinigami, The Dark Shepherd, Azrael.......
After the celestial realm crumbles, the mysterious specter of death, known by many names - wakes up in a new world as Liam Rocco, a young half-breed. Once feared as death's messenger, Liam now faces a quest to unravel why his old realm fell apart. In a world packed with monsters and magic, he's figuring out who he really is and what he's meant to do. Can he still be the reaper in this strange new skin?
What To Expect:
A writing style that's closer to light novels.
The protagonist will consistently get stronger, but not in a 'nobody can ever defeat me' sort of way, he will lose.
There's no system here.
Worldbuilding- Lots and lots of it
Litrpg Stuff- Magic, Monsters, Demons, Dungeons,Kingdoms etc....
Death- Lots and Lots of it
Adventure- The story's setting will constantly shift based on its current arc, so look forward to it~
This story is gonna span a few hundred chapters and I'd like to take my time flushing everything out so for the first few chapters the pacing will make it seem like a slice of life, but that's just to get things going before the story really gets serious - butworry not!The action will come later.
If you do end up reading this story, then I'd like to hear your thoughts on it up to chapter twelve. You can share them in the form of a review, mentioning what you did and didn't like about the story, I'll try to get through as many of them as possible.
Cheers~

- Abraham-DeWittRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0After reading six chapters, I really like the story so far. It sets up a cool concept with the reincarnation of Death, and it goes into detail on the nature of this reincarnation in cool ways. While the description of Death prior to his reincarnation can seem a bit edgy at first, this characterization is used in cool ways once the reincarnation occurs.
Style: This story is written very competently. Compared to many other stories I've read on Royal Road (especially those with under ten thousand views), the writing style is particularly solid. The writer uses SAT words, and they are always used correctly. Sentences could be formatted better in some places, but that can be solved with a bit of revision.
Grammar: The sentences were structured correctly, and they flowed well.
Story: I really like the story that was being set up in the chapters I read. I especially liked the world-building of the Celestials, Terrania, and Eden. The world felt original and thought-out. I could tell that the writer put a lot of thought into how Death and the afterlife operated.
Character: From the first few chapters I read, I really like the characterization of Death, the narrator. It would make sense for Death to act like he does when placed in that position. - BookwyrmGenxenRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I am always excited when I find a book with the word Reaper in the title, and I was not disappointed! The characters feel real, the lore is interesting, and I am invested on Liam’s ongoing attempt to find answers. The pacing may seem a little slow in the first book, but only because it is developing the characters and planting seeds for later. I really love this book, and I recommend at least giving the book an honest try!
- C. Sebastian NuttRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Review as of chapter 5
We follow death being reincarnated into a world with magic. I think the setup for this story is quite strong. We only have a cast of a few characters at this point, but I can see this story being an excellent slow burn going ahead, and I am very interested to see where it will go. A part of me wonders if this will take a similar path to other reincarnation stories, Mushoku Tensei comes to mind, but I have a feeling that with the main character literally being the Grim Reaper, things might go off the rails(in a good way) far faster. I'm also desperately interested to find out how the reaper being out of commission is going to effect the universe at large. Definitely going to be coming back to this for more in the future.
The concept of death, who apparently hasn't ever been able to use magic before, now learning, and likely conquering, the art fascinates me. I can make a few predictions as to where this will end up going, but I am going to refrain at this point. There are some minor spelling and grammar issues throughout that can be cleared up, but nothing that stopped the flow of the story. Great Job! - Mattf8675Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0This a a good story so far. The chapters are a little short, but overall the story is fun. It has been added to my daily read. I look forward to reading how the MC progresses along with the story. Now I just need to reach the 50 word count for the review minimum.
- Rookie12Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0Our story follows a grim reaper! Now, I know this is a bit of a cliché in this day and age, but wait a minute, the twist here is cool. Our Grim Reaper has been reincarnated into the body of a small child. The interesting thing is that the author has captured the essence of such an ancient being.
Our protagonist, who is now called Liam, has an extensive vocabulary and a keen understanding of the world. It fits in very well with the style, painting a vivid picture of the surroundings, while he himself uses simpler words to avoid detection. I have to applaud the author here; by using exactly the right words, he has painted us a believable picture of a former force of nature trapped in a fragile mortal shell.
The story is marked as LitRPG, but I haven't noticed any systems yet, so I can't comment about its quality. Let's talk about the world-building instead. We have several races, both mortals and immortals, involved in the story and various types of magic. The governance of the setting and the reason why some chaotic mage hasn't swept it under his feet are well explained, along with enough hints about the afterlife. All in all, the author has done his homework, and so far the setting feels interconnected and alive.
Grammar. Non-native English writer here. Take what I say here with a grain of salt. There are a lot of corrections left by readers for the author, and the author seems to have fixed every mistake, so the grammar is proper right now.
Character score. The secondary characters are unfortunately basic. From the parents to the brief appearance of the MC's secretary to the mortals, none of them are particularly engaging. They work, but that's about it. The best supporting character appears quite early in the story, but it doesn't look like she's going to be a recurring character. However, the MC's charisma and his coping with the needs of a small child were curious enough for me to keep reading. - Mani FisherRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5I'm a bit of a sucker for death stories. Terry Pratchett has the best version of Death I've seen, but this one was okay. I read to chapter five and I am excited to see how the combination of the magic of the living and the eyes of death combine.
There were a few moments where the grammar needed work for easy readability. Often the sentences needed to be restructured or simplified. 3.5 because it's better than I expected. (Yes, I am a grammatical hypocrite)
The story looks promising, with a grand destabilizing plot and a personal desire to rescue his friend. Needs to study 'men writing women' on reddit. Otherwise fine.
Character was definitely the weakest point. This is okay. Not many authors can write a good death, let alone a death that listens but doesn't understand. Still, it felt like an edge lord cosplaying death. Here's hoping for improvements in the alien omniscient mentality.
Over all, I think that I'll keep reading when I find some time. In summary, love the ideas and 'style' if that's what it falls under. The grammar could use a bit of work, but nothing a read-aloud pass though can't fix. The story itself is promising big conflict but slow pace with a lot of interesting magic combinations. The character was off for death, but that's fine. I enjoyed the review swap and look forward to this author improving.
Also, I hope to see more words and research on mankind's relation to death. - AncientDreamZzRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5Overall
I’ve read 5 Chapters so far. It’s an interesting take on Death and how the world around him operates. The details in this one clearly reflect the author’s care that they put into writing this all out. Each chapter is entertaining and keeps me wanting to know what happens next. Overall, this is a nice reincarnation story following the Grim Reaper, I can’t wait until the plot drives into the action part.
Style
As a writer myself, I’m not really a fan at writing First-Person POV, but I find stories with them still enjoyable despite it. I like how the author incorporate the main character’s inner thoughts, which gives me an idea as to who or what type of person I’m reading about. Some sentences and paragraphs could be worded better in my opinion, although it doesn’t interrupt the flow and is still very easy to understand as is.
Grammar
I’ve noticed some spelling mistakes here and there, though not it’s not too much of a problem. The rest of the grammar looked fine to me, although just like the Style, I do feel like some sentences could be worded a little better.
Story
The story itself is quite interesting. We follow the Grim Reaper’s POV and seeing how he’s reacting to having a fleshy human body, I find some of his inner thoughts pretty hilarious too. I like reincarnation plots with unique twists like this, but since I have only read 5 chapters, I haven’t seen the LitRPG portion of the novel yet. So far though, things seem very promising.
Character
The characters got introduced very naturally, and I can actually tell what type of person they are just by reading a few of their dialogs and interaction with Reaper. I was starting to like the Minerva character too, haha. The main character himself behaves like how I imagine a Grim Reaper would, and it doesn’t feel forced at all. Since he’s a human now, I do hope to see how his character will develop in the near future! - ImmortalThiefRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5Honestly, I don't have anything to critique about this novel, but here it goes:
Style:
The way the author narrate the story made it easy for me and probably other readers to get immersed in the story. And honestly that's what my main criteria for any novel I read. If I can get immersed, that story it good.
Grammar:
Oh boy, how the actual heck you managed to have so little grammatical error? or perhaps there's only a little bit. But I didn't even realize until I reach the comment where the other readers pointed out for me.
Story:
The premise is very interesting. and the world building is gradual and not all the information just being dumped right upfront in short time. It's just that the pace is too slow to my liking. although it is clear that the first chapters of any novel starts out slow and picks up the pace later, I just like it when the protagonist got strong quickly. but it's just a matter of preference.
Character:
the MC personality and thought process is consistent with his character as someone once inhuman.
I especially like the details when the MC got used to his new senses as a living being of flesh and blood.
Overall:
Other than the pace for me, this story is good! - OmniLightningRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0Overall: - Smooth and slow start, it first delves into death’s job what he does and why, and his relationship with other celestials. Then an incident leads to reincarnation for him in a new fantasy world. No big action scenes so far but Death’s reincarnation is plenty interesting. He now has to figure out how to be human and deal with magic and deities, were in his previous life neither was a concern for him.
Style: - It’s a slow starter with plenty of meticulous exposé. I’ve only read the first six chapters but feel like it will be a long and interesting journey for the Reaper.
Story: - The story has proper pacing. However, I feel that it reads like two different stories being told as plenty of time is spent explaining his life and duties as a reaper in the first few chapters, only to be reincarnated in a different world later. So far he is just starting to understand how this new world works and what he will need in order to use magic.
Grammar: - Grammar is mostly clean allowing the reader to stay immersed in the story.
Character: - The main character is experiencing human life for the first time and explains events in very vivid detail. - MicolashRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0Just read the first few chapters of this story and I am pretty intrigued!
it's a pretty cool premise but also a bit slow at times. The idea of the Reaper learning what it's like to be human is super interesting, and the way he sees the world now, filled with magic and stuff, has kept me hooked so far. It is a unique twist on the fantasy genre, intertwining themes of life, death, and rebirth with the exploration of human emotions and society.
The writing is good, easy to follow, and paints a clear picture of everything happening around Liam.
Sometimes the story is a little slow for my tastes, which made me a bit impatient for more action or something exciting to happen. Liam's character is portrayed in a way that is coherent with the story's setting and his background.
Grammar-wise, no big issues, which made the story smooth to read. I really liked how detailed Liam's observations were, especially since he's seeing everything from a human point of view for the first time. But yeah, I think the story could have been tighter, maybe with more focus on moving things along and less on the deep thinking parts.
If you're into fantasy stories that mix a bit of thinking about life and death with your magic and adventure, you'll probably like this.
