Description
In the year 125 of the Singularity Age the Nevermore Institute is a worldwide, and extra-planetary, network of agencies dedicated to the study and understanding of a series of strange events related to the decay of the laws of physics in the universe called the Dark Events. Their special agents travel to where these cases occur in order to investigate them and try to prevent them from happening in the future. Mai, head of operations of the Special Investigation Division, with her partners Shin and Lizbeth, along with thousands of other agents, are in charge of carrying out these operations in cooperation with local forces. The cases they investigate are classified as Enygma Files. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Hi! I'm H.K., creator of the Nevermore series. I hope you enjoy it. I will try to upload a chapter weekly but it is possible that in the future, for some time, the chapters may be delayed because the stories are divided into the cases that the characters investigate and I like to review them several times. Each case, depending on how long they are, is a volume. Thanks for reading :).

- srwoodsRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0It interesting take on a fantasy sci-fi story. The world is earth sort of anyway it takes place far in the future after a war that has turned loose all manner of fantasy races. There’s also a good deal of tech, as you’d expect from sci-fi. It follows a pair of future special agents on an investigation.
Style: Its written in the third person prospective from multiple viewpoints most of the time it is one of the two protagonists. It’s formatted well and easy to read, also there are pictures in each chapter giving it the feeling of a light novel.
Story: The protagonists are members of a global reaction force dedicated to dealing with strange and unusual things. They are also strange and unusual themselves one being a fey and the other an alien. They happen to be a couple and there is one very mild sex scene the story is tagged for it and it’s so tame I’d suggest reading the NSFW marked chapter even if sex isn’t your thing in books. Back to the plot the story gave me an X-files mixed with anime feel and because I like both of those things, so I found it enjoyable.
Grammar: I didn’t find anything wrong with the grammar in this story.
Character: The characters are fun and well written and their reactions to the story are great. Being both otherworldly beings and from a future setting they have cool gadgets and inherent abilities that make for some enjoyable action sequences. Out of all of the characters I think I like Shin the most, he’s one of the protagonists he’s the alien and personally I enjoy outsider characters and while Mai is odd she’s not quite as odd as him.
So overall I’d say that I like it and will keep reading it. I’d recommend that you do the same if you happen to be reading the reviews and stumble across mine. - KralicekRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0…without any bells and whistles attached.
Nevermore: Enygma Files is for all intent and purposes a very typical Japanese light novel, albeit one written in English, complete with the detailed art made in the very appropriate style. Everything, from the writing, to art, feels the part. All what makes the Light Novels attractive, from the existing plot, a simple storytelling, from the drawn art, all is present here. The science-fantasy is actually quite a common genre. Most common flaw, bad translation, is entirely absent - the novel was written in English in the first place.
The plot, set in the world where advancing technology meets magical phenomena, revolves around the special paranormal investigation unit, and their continuous work to uncover the secret of the so-called Dark Events.
Though there is “typical anime protagonist with secret origins”, the different acts cover the different teams and cases, so the usual tropes don't overstay their welcome.
Style - 100% authentic Light Novel Experience complete with beautiful artwork.
Grammar - Unlike the Japanese Lights Novels, this one was written in English, without any obvious errors.
Story - A detective story with the unusual anime-craziness attached to it, mecha included.
Characters - An usual selection of characters. They aren’t particularly colourful, or deep, often archetypes found in the other works, usually defined by their unusual quirks, well drawn appearance, or the role they play within the story. Though barebone, they don't represent any problem for the story of this kind where character development seems secondary to the interesting and flashy events. I’ve seen this elsewhere - spectacle over the characters - but it is not necessarily an issue with the story of this format.
While this story didn’t exactly step outside the comfort zone of the certain genres and formats, it didn't did anything outragingly wrong, and was quite enjoyable to read. - Lucian T. EinarRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Overall: Nevermore: Enygma Files by Hasegawa Kein is a cyberpunk-inspired neo-noir tale that delves into a future world filled with strange phenomena and a special investigative team tasked with solving them.
Style: The light novel style of storytelling, complemented by artwork, provides a visually engaging experience. The dialogue-heavy approach with nuanced language adds depth to the narrative, reminiscent of classics like Ghost in the Shell.
Story: The interconnected cases explored by the special agents slowly unravel a larger, more complex narrative, blending elements of cyberpunk, fantasy, and sci-fi. The plot, akin to a blend of X-Files and anime, offers an intriguing mix of genres.
Grammar: Despite minor language discrepancies, the story maintains a decent level of readability, allowing for a smooth progression through the narrative without significant disruptions.
Character: While the characters may lean towards typical archetypes, their interactions, especially between Mai and Shin, offer engaging dynamics. The incorporation of futuristic gadgets and unique abilities adds flair to action sequences, enhancing the overall character appeal.
In summary, Nevermore: Enygma Files presents a captivating blend of genres, supported by strong visuals and an evolving narrative. Fans of detective fiction with a cyberpunk twist will find this series a compelling read, offering an authentic light novel experience with a touch of mystery and intrigue. - Ayela ArcanaRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Don’t miss this amazing art! It’s truly a gift to see this illustrator’s original work. The world was changed by a dimensional invasion. Now the Feys, Humans, and Aeons have the Nevermore Institute, paranormal events, and Neurowiring.
But that was history, and the Enygma Files are now. Studying the Dark Events and trying to make sense of them. One of the things I loved most about this story is how the Other World requires amnesia. The memory loss of time between worlds. It adds more to the layered mysteries.
I loved the beautiful descriptions of the world. I felt like I was really there, walking through the snow. The prose is truly lovely. Full of that wistful scenery you expect from Japanese anime. I was really feeling every moment I was reading, pulled into the story and the characters.
There are multiple point-of-view characters, and they’re all interesting. Pointy-ears, heterochromia. Then there’s the paranormal abilities combined with tech. It all works together to make this whole different Earth that keeps you flipping the pages, excited to see what’s next. It’s also dead sexy, so get ready for Mai and Shin!
I left a couple of punctuation edits, but found this a clean read.
Overall: highly recommend this gripping, futuristic tale of intrigue! - Paul James KeyesRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This work must be seen under the lense that the author knows english as a second language. With that in mind, this story is actually quite extrodinary! I have read numerous stories by non native english speakers, and sometimes people get really hung up on tenses or sentence structure / grammar, but this story doesn't fall into that pit. As said by others, the author's artwork is included throughout, and is high quality graphic novel status. Those panels were my favorite part, as it really helped me imagine the characters.
The author tends to focus on the visual more than the other senses, and the prose can feel a little dry at times, but the world building and story are both interesting, and the pacing (so far) feels pretty good. The prologue serves as an info dump, but I found it interesting enough and I did not get hung up on it.
I found the characters yo be visually very cool! The art style is top notch, and I personally think the author should take this in the graphic novel direction as they clearly have a great talent for it and I think the prose is the weak point here. - Traversing the DarkRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Story: Nevermore: The Enygma files is a cyberpunk-esque neo-noir tale focused on three special agents sent to explore a series of disturbing phenomena throughout their future world. These agents generally employ a buddy system similar to our own police forces which is a great way to showcase their individual characters and how their sometimes conflicting worldviews play off each other. The overarching story begins to develop later in the series when it becomes clear these disturbances may be connected to a much bigger issue...
Style: This is a light novel and as such most chapters are centered around dialogue with some sparse description and the (welcome) inclusion of artwork to spice up and breathe life into the characters. Every chapter has an associated image and the highlights for me were chapters 9+10 - definitely get to that part. Though dialogue-heavy, there's some real excellent nuance in the language - take even just chapter one for example:
"I-I decided that I would not close my eyes to that beauty, because when we do, we are as alive as we are dead… and there is nothing here for me anymore, my friend. Nothing."
Great stuff, and one of the many reasons I compare this novel favorably with Ghost in the Shell.
Grammar: I'm aware the author's first language isn't english and so allow some leeway for this. Mistakes are there but in general I wasn't put off.
Characters: While I don't feel the characters divert too much from typical archetypes I overall enjoyed their interactions - particularly those between Mai and Shin. Overall, if you are at all interested in detective/noir fiction with a cyberpunk edge supported by some breathtaking artwork, I'd urge you to give this story a shot. - Michelle JacquelineRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0Nevermore/Enygma Files (Volume 1: The Amalgam) by Hasegawa Kein delivers an intriguing mix of cyberpunk neo-noir, Lovecraftian cosmic horror, and investigative procedural in a far-future setting. Set in the year 125 of the Singularity Age, the story follows the Nevermore Institute-a global (and interplanetary) organization dedicated to investigating "Dark Events," phenomena where the laws of physics themselves seem to be breaking down. These cases are cataloged as Enygma Files, and Volume 1 centers on "The Amalgam," kicking off with a mysterious prologue involving a strange message in a frozen landscape and unfolding into midnight meetings, personal backstories, and unsettling anomalies.
The worldbuilding stands out immediately. The author blends advanced technology with decaying reality and eldritch influences in a way that feels fresh-think Delta Green or Control meets Blade Runner, but with a slow-burn pacing that lets the atmosphere build. The prose has a cinematic quality, especially in descriptive scenes like the snow-covered prologue or the tense conversations on Siren Island. Hasegawa Kein brings a visual flair to the writing, making locations and character moments easy to picture.
Characters are a strong point. The early focus on agents like Mai and Shin gives the story a personal, almost intimate feel amid the cosmic-scale weirdness. Their dynamics-professional yet layered with history-add emotional weight, and there's some NSFW content (handled maturely) that deepens relationships without feeling gratuitous. The side characters introduced in the bonus summary report profiles chapter are a nice touch, hinting at a larger ensemble for future volumes.
Pacing is deliberate and slow-burn, which suits the investigative mystery vibe but might test readers wanting faster action. The first volume sets up the overarching mystery of the Dark Events while delivering a self-contained case.
Editing is generally solid, though occasional phrasing quirks appear--nothing t
