- Ink & TomeRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Disclaimer: this review is based off of everything that I've read so far, up through the end of Chapter 7. Do with that information as you will.
So, I'll be honest. I've never been a huge fan of the cyberpunk genre in general - it usually just... doesn't excite me, for some reason. I've always understood WHY people enjoy it, but just haven't enjoyed it myself.
That being said, this is by and far a massive exception. I think it's largely because of the first-person perspective we follow of the central protagonist and my weak spot for wise-cracking, chaotically loveable main characters. That, plus the whole mystery aspect... well, that's getting into more detail than I planned before the sections.
So instead, let's get rolling.
Style: It's rare that I find stories where the author's writing style matches so perfectly with the story they're trying to tell. Neon Mirage is one of those rarities. I felt myself drawn into events from the very beginning, a must-have for me in a genre I usually don't read from. Not only that, but the pacing was almost perfect, the action was just the right mix of chaos and excitement, and the author's tone - which in the case of this story sort of ties into the character section as well - melded into and uplifted every single scene. Just, wow.
Story: Honestly, the only reason I don't have a perfect five stars for the story section is because of some of the times where technology comes into play story wise and, with my unfamiliarity in the genre, it feels like I'm already almost expected to know what it is I'm reading about. That being said, it's barely a hindrance at all and I tended to pick things up from context clues as the chapters went on.
The real, major drawing point of the story is the mystery surrounding (minor spoiler here) the strange implant in Ryker's head, that's causing him to see code everywhere and also break the fourth wall in delicious, Deadpool-esque fashion. I absolutely have to know what's going on with the tech they pu - QuakDoktorRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I’m only putting a review up here because I felt called out in this chapter.
overall loving the 4th wall breaking decent into madness that this novel has started with. Looking forward to seeing where it goes.
now onto the obligatory added word because a review can’t be less than fifty word or some such - The Wild WitchRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5If you want to read this you need some basic knowledge about the Cyberpunk universe. At least, Night City, some of the corps and gangs and the general feel of it all. Otherwise, you might miss out on a few things and might be tempted to give a bad review.
And that's not really healthy for good old Ryker, now, is it? He'll confuse his best, or maybe even only, friend with all of his talk, which would be obviously a bad thing. If you haven't started reading, Ryker and Danny are, up to chapter 6 anyway, the MCs of the story. Not counting the mysterious woman who has to be there for obvious reasons. You can hardly run around in NC without encountering mysterious women.
Which brings me to the other thing you need. A good deal of dark, surreal humor, including the slight mix up of story, writer and reader. If you don't take yourself and Ryker too seriously you'll fit right in.
I'll don something bulletproof and keep on reading. - Frozen Over The MoonRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0I'll be honest, when I started reading this, I had no context behind the world of CyberPunk, it just wasn't a game I ever played, especially after the Fiasco release they had. I know they fixed a lot of the game now, but it was still not up my alley.
However, the perspective that Neon Mirage takes is definitely an interesting one as Ryker's journey through Night City as some regular dude who only recently graduated from being a corporate slave definitely portrays the chaos and overall cynicism that anyone would have living in such a dystopian future in a fresh a novel way. Skaya is also a fairly interesting character, at one point she seems to give the impression of someone who knows more than they lead on but in other scenes, she acts completely clueless. It's unknown to me whether it's all a deliberate act or she is clearly up to something. Whatever it is, I am not complaining; shes pretty badass after all.
The 4th wall-breaking dialogue was not something I personally enjoyed in stories, but I still found it funny regardless. All the characters seem to have semblance and are rooted in reality.
The references to CyberPunk inverse things also was interesting for me as someone who had never delved into the story. I had to personally search up what a Makigai MaiMai was, and when I found out through images, I was able to visualize the action scenes better.
Overall a solid 4/5 read. I am not into Fanfiction either but I still found some enjoyment.
