- bubbleduckRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5First of all, I like this fiction. A lot. It has interesting ideas. It has executed them well. I like the aliens. I like the setting. I haven't seen a single thing yet that could possibly turn me from this.
It is hard to give an all-encompassing impression after only three chapters, because I may have simply seen the most well thought out and edited bits, and future chapters will be terrible. I'm hopeful though.
Style - 4.5/5. Consistent perspectives. Stable chronology with minor jumping through a single narrative flashback, explained in-universe. Overall quite stable and understandable.
Grammar - 4/5. Vocabulary reaches excellent for a non-professional author. Exposition is lucid, vivid, and only confusing when it's meant to be - it might be difficult for a non-native English speaker though. What this vocabulary allows the author to do, and he does it beautifully, especially in the first chapter, is bring in his own turns of phrase into his writing. It feels refreshing reading the first chapter.
There are issues with the grammar though, and if this wasn't RR I would give it a 3-3.5. As it is RR. I could give it a 5 and everyone would be happy, but that's not the point of the grammar score. For example, there are a number of adverbs used, and sentences often stretch too long.
Character: 4/5. This would be lower if the aliens weren't so damn good, given that I know very little about the main character. It hasn't been the biggest focus of the chapters so far and it shows. Aliens however are what I look for in inhuman characters - read my comment in chapter 3 for a full description.
Story: 5/5. Well done. You earned it. It could turn out terrible and cliche, but I would be more surprised if it does than if it doesn't, and I'm happy with that for the moment. We have tension and motivation, (kind of) politics, world building - what I look for in a sci-fi. It kept me interested the whole way through, except maybe for a few paragraphs of chapter 3.
