Description

Emilia McIntyre has always felt in between, like she didn’t quite fit in this category or that. And at the end of her Freshman year, after a game of pickup basketball in the gym, she realizes something has changed. Something about her.

Afraid the others at summer camp will know just how different she is, Emilia only goes at her parents’ insistence.

MIMIC AT SUMMER CAMP is a story about becoming comfortable in one's own body, about refusing to be defined by others, about standing up to elemental fiends of power. It is my fifth novel, written between February 10, 2019 and June 29, 2019.

I'm not usually one to get into a story without a pretty hefty wordcount, I'm glad I gave this one a shot though and you will be too. It reads a bit more like a book than some of the sprawling serials that tend to thrive on this site but I also found it a refreshing change of pace.
    Overall
I fully suggest giving this one a chance, it's short, the story is consistent and you will know within a chapter or two if it is clicking for you. I'm not saying this one is for everyone but I honestly can't think of a bad thing to say about it either. It isn't too heavy and Mimic powers are always fun.
    Style
The author strongly believes in show not tell and manages to fairly seamlessly blend events happening and portraying character thoughts or emotions. I haven't read their other works yet but the style alone has me wanting to. The style for the story is consistent as well and doesn't take time to find it's voice.
    Story
It's set at a teen summer camp in a world with rare but open superpowers, the actual plot is a bit structured or contrived but feels justified, there are things going on at Camp Arrowhead and our characters get swept up in it. There is mystery, character growth and all too genuine feeling teen struggles with identity and limited control in their own lives. I wouldn't say it dives deep but the depth certainly feels like it is there.
    Grammar
This story is polished, it's clearly had editing and the way it is told feels very natural. It could be printed as is, it felt easy to fall into and never had sentences that jarred me out of the story.
    Characters
The cast is small and a lot of characters only get short mentions, that said, the story does a lot with a little here. Character voices and perspectives feel very distinct, even total side characters don't feel 2D, there aren't multiple perspectives but this story doesn't need them for you to follow the drives and struggles of everyone.
The character perspectives and issues facing them feel like they have seeds of real
