- CatgurlRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0Greatly enjoying this story. The main character is interesting, relateable and truly intelligent - i.e. he acts with believable intelligence and common sense, rather than the author calling him intelligent while the mc acts like an idiot. This seems to be true for all the main characters to date, so I gave a star just for that, lol.
Characterization of the mc and people he connects with is very good. There are several interesting and distinct characters already, who I am looking forward to learning more about.
World-building is fresh, interesting and has a lot of promise, but some of the mechanics are fuzzy and unclear - like the nature of outer space (or whatever space) these people are living in, how exactly are the portable portals found (although not called portals here, which is also confusing), what exactly is a white space (also really unclear). There is talk of clearing the portals and selling them on, but it is not clear to me where they come from in the first place. However, none of this has stopped me from enjoying the story.
The prose is well-written and engaging; the author clearly wrote all of it himself - no boring AI assisted padding here. The grammer is also very good; the author is clearly putting in the extra effort to spell-check AND grammer-check. The story uses good volcabulary with no profanity. I am always impressed by authors who make the effort to think and express themselves without the crutch of swear words.
The story had me hooked from the first chapter, and just keeps getting better. Lots of action and adventure, interesting plot, intelligent character behavior that makes sense, well-written, no fluff or padding - all major positives. I feel that most people would enjoy this story, so it is easy for me to recommend. I myself am fully engaged and looking forward to what happens next - well done author.
Update - looks like this story will not be continued. Ah well. Que sera sera.
